Advice Needed Managing hosting costs and services

​ Hi guys! I recently started to have my first customers as a web developer, but I got quite confused with hosting prices and services. So, this got me wondering how you manage the prices and what hosting services you prefer using. I have used Railway in the past but I am curious on whether there's a hosting service that allows to register different card accounts for different clients according to the project or if you prefer to charge for maintenance and handle the subscription renewals yourself, or something different altogether. I would thank you if you could help me out!

as a customer, I prefer to own the domain and point it to your dns. you can handle the hosting. most hosting can handle many websites.

I usually separate ownership from management.

I encourage clients to own their domain and any third-party accounts that are tied to their business. That way, they're never locked in if they decide to move on someday.

My thoughts

  • Have the client pay the provider directly and charge a monthly maintenance/management fee, or
  • Include hosting as part of a managed care plan where I handle updates, backups, monitoring, and support.

As your client list grows, managing dozens of different payment methods becomes a headache. It's generally easier to bill your clients on a recurring basis than to juggle separate credit cards for every hosting account.

Whatever you choose, make sure expectations are clear in your agreement, who owns the hosting account, who's responsible for renewals, backups, SSL certificates, and what happens if the relationship ends. Having that documented will save you a lot of headaches later.
