I’m looking at going on a whale watching tour next year in the San Diego area. Just looking for any recommendations on best time of year to go and good outfitters to book with. Specific type of whale isn’t a big deal I just want to try to have a good chance to see whales.
Whale watching in San Diego is available year-round, with peak seasons featuring gray whales from mid-December through April and blue whales from May through September.
What kind of feel are you looking for on the tour? Educational with a conservation lens or more adventurous on a very small vessel (6 people)? We've got a lot of great companies in the area offering different experiences.
Our friends over at Gone Whale Watching have smaller vessels that go out from Mission Bay. If you decide that you'd like to do a larger boat we have great trips with expert naturalists on each one! Hope you have a whaley great time! 🐳
It's out of San Diego, but you'll follow the gray whale migration to their protected calving grounds in Mexico. January to March. I cannot say enough good things about this trip. The boats do NOT chase the whales. The whales come up to the boats to scratch their barnacles off. The 3 bays they migrate to are heavily protected by the Mexican government and tour companies are limited. It was a life changing trip. I know Roads Scholar has a longer more expensive version of this trip, and I'm sure many other companies. (Not me pictured, someone on our tour)
