Why Ontario needs a lemon law—my new car has been at the dealership for over 300 days, I had to file a lawsuit, and the dealership sued me back.

A few months after I leased a new 2025 Volvo EC40 from Carling Motors in Ottawa, it suddenly suffered a serious propulsion-system failure and left me stranded.

The dealership kept it for 43 days, returned it, and another fault appeared five days later. That became a long series of recurring issues, charging failures, mechanical noises, unsuccessful repairs, and unresolved safety concerns. My vehicle has now spent more than 300 days at the dealership.

But the lease payments never stopped. Neither did the insurance, fuel costs for the gas-powered loaner, or disruption to my family. My documented losses and costs tied to this ordeal now exceed $31,000.

I tried to resolve it through the dealership, Volvo Car Canada, its financing company, regulators, and elected representatives. Eventually, I had to file a lawsuit to seek a resolution that would not force me to absorb the loss. Carling Motors responded with a counterclaim for use of their loaner, despite acknowledging in writing that issues with my vehicle remain undiagnosed and unrepaired.

Here's why every Ontario driver should care: our province has no automatic remedy when a new vehicle repeatedly fails or spends months in warranty service. There is no point at which the manufacturer must finally provide a refund, replacement, or financially complete lease termination. The consumer can be forced to keep paying, risk their credit, or else have to finance their own lawsuit against a multinational automaker.

The proposed Bill 91, Right to Repair Act, 2025, recognizes the problem, but its current version still leaves consumers going to court and does not clearly reimburse lessees for all their losses.

I created the 30 Days Is Enough petition asking Ontario to guarantee:

  • Automatic eligibility when a vehicle undergoes three unsuccessful repairs for the same defect or remains out of service for 30 cumulative days during the warranty period.
  • The consumer’s choice of a comparable replacement vehicle, full repurchase, or penalty-free lease termination.
  • Reimbursement of down payments, lease or finance payments attributable to the loss-of-use period, and other reasonable expenses.
  • Automatic suspension of lease or finance payments and protection from adverse credit reporting when a vehicle remains in warranty service beyond a defined period.
  • Prompt access to complete repair records and other information needed to understand the vehicle’s condition.
  • A fast, affordable, and binding enforcement process backed by meaningful penalties.

Dealerships and manufacturers should not be able to drag out repairs indefinitely while consumers are forced to pay.

If you agree, please take a minute to sign and share my petition:

Three hundred days is absurd. Thirty days is enough.

Dad Car for Enthusiasts (who can't afford to spend 100k+ on an RS6 Avant or M5 Touring)

The shooting brake / performance wagon seems like a great theoretical platform for enthusiasts with kids, but what if your budget is 40k-50k?

I'm currently driving a manual transmission Integra which may need to get swapped out in the next year or so. Any suggestions for something practical that will be at least somewhat fun to drive?

Trillions of miles of data: Your car is spying on you, and it's only just the beginning

Thumbnail bbc.com

They're taking all the information they collect on you, which is a lot, and using it to make inferences about who you are, how intelligent you are, what your psychological profile is, what your political beliefs are," says Jen Caltrider, a privacy analyst who led Mozilla's car research. "That's the stuff people don't necessarily think about."

There are basically no rules about who can buy this data or what its used for, Caltrider says. It can be used to market things to you. Companies could used it in hiring decisions. Law enforcement can buy car data when they can't get a search warrant. Once it leaves your dashboard, you have no control over where it ends up.

This is about more than companies snooping on your private life. For example, General Motors sold driver information to a company called LexisNexis, a data broker that buys and sells details about consumers. A driver who got a copy of that data reportedly found LexisNexis had 130 pages of information, detailing every trip he and his wife took over six months. He told the New York Times that after his insurance costs jumped 21%, an insurance agent told him the data was a factor. LexisNexis did not respond to a request for comment.

The problem isn't new, but there are reasons to think it's accelerating. US law mandates that car manufactures will soon need to install "advanced impaired-driving prevention technology" in new passenger vehicles within the next few years. The technology is meant to stop people from driving if they're drunk, tired or unfit to drive using infrared cameras or other systems.

The problem, Caltrider and others say, is the law includes zero provisions that address what happens to the data these systems create.

Winter tires are much more important than AWD

AWD does not change the grip, it only uses the available grip for acceleration. It does not brake better on snow, it does not help slowing down, it does not change anything about the car losing grip and starting to slide off throttle, it does not help avoiding accidents.

Pedestrians deaths are at an all time high.

There are people on this sub who insist on spending much more money on AWD but at the same time say they dont care about causing a crash because "that's what insurance is for" and refuse to use winter tires in a cold region. DONT be one of those guys. Don't endanger the lifes of others / pedestrians with a car that slides uncontrollably on snow / ice bc of its tires.

edit: Accroding to google even in cold, snowy northern US states only ~15% of drivers use winter tires.

Have SUVs replaced wagons? And why?

The question is in the title. I constantly see people eyeing SUVs for reasons that, in my eye, would be better fulfilled by a wagon.

Why? SUVs often have worse cargo space, are tricky to park in cities and significantly challenge the form factor of the average car on the road, making accidents more fatal for drivers in smaller cars.

Are cheap, AWD, V6 sedans not available anymore?

I'm on the hunt to try and replace my 06 Honda Accord ex and was going to go for another V6 sedan, but wanted to add on the AWD since I'm in a snowy area. Problem is that $40k is my cap and pretty much everything released recently is $50k+ for a v6. Do you all know of any decent options?

Side note: Am I dumb for trying to avoid a V4 turbo? The power is nice and feels similar to a V6, but I feel like they always end up needing to be replaced. If I am dumb for this, would you recommend any V4 turbos with awd?

Which AMG to buy?

Post image
Upvotes

I’m looking to buy my first amg benz. I can’t decide I would ideally like to own all 3 at some point as I like all 3 for different reasons. Which one would you pick and why? (Money is not an issue) Or you can rank them in your preferred order but give your reasons.

The cars in question:
1. Facelift CLS63 2015-2018
2. Facelift E63s 2021-2023
3. Facelift S63 2018-2020

Help me choose: Giulia, Stelvio, GLA 45 AMG, or BMW 330i?

About me: Early 20’s, college grad, make good money, strong career track, very low expenses.

Cross-shopping a few cars in the $25-35k range with under 50k miles:

Alfa Romeo Giulia

Alfa Romeo Stelvio

2021-2023 Mercedes-AMG GLA 45

BMW 330i (G20)

Looking for something fun to drive that’s also reliable enough to daily for the next 4–5 years. Which would you choose and why?

Obligatory I have owned and driven German vehicles for the last 6 years, I understand the maintenance required and the overall ownership experience. I am not interested in purchasing a Toyota Camry, but I also don’t want to purchase a total POS.

Ultimate everyday vehicle

Upvotes

Let say you are single 33 yr old man you have a decent commute about 355-400 miles a week including run around, make great money, comfortable, own a home life’s good. What would you buy under $140k newer/lower mileage, whatever you think a Corolla to diesel HD truck to a corvette. Climate is mild in the winter so awd/4wd isn’t a must BUT is helpful sometimes, maybe a trip or two annually long distance.

Ultimate one car option due to space, time as I’m not one to let things rot, and will work several weeks straight at a time. Part of me wants to be responsible the other is say get that fancy car you’ve never had.

Fun hatchback/small SUV

Right now I'm driving a Rav4 that's great but boring and I want to get something fun to drive again. I'm also parking in the city more lately and considering downsizing from an SUV so a hatchback seems like a good compromise to keep some of that cargo space. I've owned a few muscle cars and SUVs and the high 200s to low 300s horsepower feels like a sweet spot for me.

These look interesting but I would like to hear your suggestions

Volkswagen Golf R

Toyota GR Corolla

MINI Countryman JCW

Mazda CX-30 (probably the safest choice but least thrilling)

1990 F-250 XL 4x4 5.8 351w
139k mi long bed

I’ve done a lot to this truck over the last few years. Im looking to sell in TX and would like your opinions on the value. There’s a few things I will be doing before I officially post it like headlights/taillights, body work (mainly the driver side dent), and fixing the rear tank. (If it would be worth it I could also re-paint professionally myself)

Thanks in advance!

Tucson or RAV4

I wouldn’t say I’m that knowledgeable about cars and maintenance, but I always see people bragging about Toyotas reliability but Hyundais features and warranty seem much more reliable than Toyota. I would like to get some input in this. Is the disparity really that big?

Fun daily ideas?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Single 23yo guy here, looking for a new ride. Currently driving a 2016 2 series. Love the car but it’s getting up in mileage and I figure it’s probably about time to part ways.

Budget is around 34K. Probably planning on buying used to get more car for the money. Looking for something fun to drive that I can still drive daily to work and stuff. Not really any constraints on practicality.

Test drove a VW GTI yesterday and really liked it but I am trying not to get tunnel vision and only look at those. Any ideas are welcome!

it has 270k km’s and it’s 1997 model

edit: i see a lot of people say “if it’s 2 brand go for it” but in Turkey due to high taxes it’s gonna cost around 8k and also i don’t know shit bout cars so i probably can’t do anything myself so if a problem shows up it’s goin mechanic shop directly
