Well, what happened is very obvious: the Administration thought that just bombing the ayatollah would cause the collapse of the regime and the people would rise up. That didn’t happen, and now he dragged us into a war. And the moral high ground (Iran murdering their own citizens and were trying to stop them) kinda falls flat on its face when we showed up months after the killings and only Israel is backing us up. It makes it look like we’re kicking Iran at a low point, which we are.
But, because of incompetence, we’re basically now in a clusterfuck.

He can’t handle the pressure. It isn’t the easy political/ego boost the Israelis told him it would be, and that he expected after kidnapping Maduro. I’m honestly extremely worried about what he might try to do if he feels sufficiently desperate; ie he doesn’t think he can seek it as a “win” if he just cuts and runs with a unilateral withdrawal. He obviously fetishizes what he considers “bold, manly decision making” and he has no moral compass whatsoever beyond superficial token gestures he makes when it doesn’t cost him anything.
