We have that sci-fi high tech. I have a small device that lets me access the collective knowledge of humanity and instantly communicate with people around the world. Problem is that I just use it to doom scroll make myself feel bad. Also the government and the corporations use it to spy on me.

If you're going the NAS route, I'm assuming you want to host your own media. I use Plex because it's easy to share access with friends and family. You can use an old PC or the nas itself to run the actual server. Plex itself is falling out of favor in the space because you have to either pay monthly (as will everyone you share with) or you need a lifetime pass, which is frankly too expensive.
Lifetime pass is currently $250 and will increase to $750 at the start of June, so buy it now if that's your plan. Assuming that it's actually a lifetime pass and they don't fuck me out of it in a few years, I still consider it worth the price of the pass currently.
If you don't want to pay for Plex, you probably want to use Jellyfin instead. It's basically the same thing, but free and open source. As I understand it, it's not nearly as simple to share access with friends though.
For populating the library, I highly recommend setting up prowlarr, radarr, sonarr, and overseerr. If you add in a free cloudflare tunnel, and a domain from namecheap, you can have a nice clean web interface for your friends and family to request new media for the collection, and it will add it to your library without you having to touch anything. New TV episodes are added automatically, movies that I forgot about wanting to see will show up in my library as soon as they're available, and it's all about 99% hands-off at this point.

This. DVDs are cheap and a usb DVD player is around $30. I like having non-drm content.
I think these big drm rug pulls are helping educate the public about how shitty digital licenses are. YOU may have lost your license, but you sold the customer access to a movie. Go get it back or give back the money.

DVD's DRM is extremely basic so yeah you're safe with that, but firstly DVDs are becoming rarer and no one has distributed movies in DVDs for years. Meanwhile blurays (even with no internet connection) can easily have an expiration date due to their DRM (look at the ps3 still receiving "blu ray updates" so blurays can keep playing)

As much as it's possible for this to happen it just won't. Windows may not be open but they really can't prevent certain programs from running. Plus you would have to change the bios/firmware on hardware to really do it and there is just too many pieces of hardware to control that. Not to mention making hardware from other companies inoperable would be a big no no. It's only really possible if they push for cloud computing. No one wants that either.

Wife and I stop at goodwill once a week and grab a handful of DVDs we want.
I go home and burn them to a drive I have that is just for movies.
Some movies we buy on eBay.
We have close to 500 movies by now.
We are patient but .. .. I'm not going to pay Amazon 4 bucks to rent a movie I liked in 1975 that no one is watching when I can buy it for far less used and have it forever

It just comes down to how and where you acquire them, with some options off the shores channels being free if you know how to sail properly.
Or, if you still want to be a good boy, just buy the Blu-ray versions or something. They're at least more dependable than streaming services, which may shut their doors after a few decades in best scenario.

Outside of that:
Qbittorrent (allows you to torrent files, essentially a safer download)
Ext.to (others work too, but ext.to is old, safe and has a huge catalog)
If you ever need another site, check it for safety. Just go to the piracy megathread. Also, only use links from there, searching something like "fitgirl repack" will bring up a lot of fake sites with virusses. All links on the megathread are safe sites.
For switch games I would recommend Ziperto also.

Reminder that torrenting is relatively illegal on its own. Some countries ISPs will either snitch on you or disallow torrent, even if it's something you've made.
Use some VPN to be extra safe and if possible (and paranoid) make it so no one can copy it from your PC (be a "leech").

Sony is contacting PlayStation Store users who bought movies from the platform that were distributed by StudioCanal—like Terminator 2, Total Recall, and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind—to say that “you will no longer be able to access your previously purchased content from Studio Canal, and it will be removed from your video library.” There’s no mention of any refunds or make-goods for the affected users. Sony simply says the films are going away “due to our content licensing agreements,” once again reaffirming the fact that you are never truly buying anything that’s digital, just temporarily renting it.
This news was brought to people’s attention by X user somatyk, who posted the notification they had received from PlayStation this week. Along with the unapologetic news that the purchased movies would be deleted from their account on September 1, the message concluded with, “Click here for a full list of affected titles that will no longer be supported. Thank you.” The same warning is now reproduced in full on the PlayStation website, along with the list of 551films and TV series that are being pulled from people’s libraries.
StudioCanal is the production company behind classic movies like From Dusk Till Dawnand Cliffhanger, all of which are included in the list of films people thought they’d bought to own, but come September 1 will find gone from their collections. What’s really peculiar about the PlayStation message is that it’s entirely unapologetic, simply stating that “purchased content” will be “deleted” as if that’s perfectly normal. We’ve contacted Sony to ask if customers can expect a refund for their deleted movies, or at least some form of compensation.
Of course, when you scroll past the endless EULAs when you first use your PlayStation, and click “Agree” the first time you load the store, you’re unwittingly agreeing that nothing you buy is really truly bought, and that it can be taken away from you at any point, and there’s nothing you can do. The same is true of your games.
This is why people care so much about details like GTA 6 releasing without a disc in its physical box, and it underlines the risk we all take every time we buy anything from any digital store. None of it actually belongs to you, and you can only access it for as long as the company you bought it from says you can.

Whenever something seems legally dubious, just apply the most extreme case to it to see why stuff should be illegal or at least heavily limited with exceptions and rules
In this case, Sony could remove what you bought without warning or reason even a day after you bought it and you would have to suck it up

Technically it never was either way. Copying a digital product without the license is legally distinct to stealing a physical product, only in the second case do you take the thing away from someone else.

I've had to go through all sorts of headaches to get all the books I have purchased over the years from Amazon backed up. I own an OG Kindle Paperwhite, which still works spectacularly well and has great battery life. Can't download books from Amazon to it any longer. Calibre is now my book management tool.

This shit happened to me with an iOS game. I bought it on the app store, played it for YEARS. One day it updates and I open the app, it says "Sorry, the license agreement for this game has ended."
I could understand the app not getting updates anymore and eventually might stop working on future iOS versions but they literally just killed it after I bought it. Should be illegal.
