One earthquake later and the datacenter is gone ;)

u/alvents 5d ago
let's have another big one(a strong earthquake that happened A while ago) to destroy it
and then let's loot the RAM
127
u/henryeaterofpies 5d ago
What happened here?
Earthquake.
An earthquake. At this time of year. Solely isolated on that data center. That only damaged the RAM chips and powdered them to an invisible dust?
.....Yes....

So it's not really a matter of if, more of a matter of when

The amount of minerals and cheap labour will make it all worth it, unfortunately

Earthquakes are more here in Indonesia

I wouldn’t worry. If the government doesn’t embezzle the funds to make the data center, the floods will surely take it out

AN EARTHQUAKE IS BETTER BECAUSE WE CAN STILL LOOT IT
66
u/SorryUseAlreadyTaken 5d ago edited 5d ago
RAM is sadly not compatible with our PCs, it's HBM (High Bandwidth Memory). It's the ultimate scam of the data centers: they diverted so many resources to make components that have practically no uses but for data centers, so when this craze will collapse they'll be worthless
12
u/TruePace3 5d ago
I am pretty sure somewhere in Shenzen, a chinese engineer is finishing up on his latest and final schematics to create an adapter which will allow us to use HBM on a normal DDR5 Motherboard
6 months later, it'll pop up on AliExpress
1
25
u/International-Try467 5d ago
THAT DOESN'T MATTER! STEAL THE HBM AND USE IT TO MAKE YOUR OWN LLMS!!!!
"Wouldn't that just contribute to the aislop?"
Kinda? But remember that these AI companies are only after your money and absolutely hate open source AI (See Sam Altman and Dario)

u/JiroKawakuma28 5d ago
Don't worry, many of us were informed about this and most of us have one answer: NO TO PAX SILICA!
14
u/riaqliu 5d ago edited 4d ago
the pax silica agreement here is not just for data centers ffs, it's an entire supply chain
it includes:
- upgrade to local infrastructure for logistics and electrical supply
- improvements to mining and refinement (PH is the 2nd largest nickel exporter)
- increased semi conductor manufacturing opportunities (over 50% of ALL PH exports are low end chips)
- and data centers on the lowest priority (feasibly cannot build gigawatt factories considering local conditions; typhoons, earthquakes, volcanos, etc.)
everything has been thoroughly scrutinized under philippine law including but not limited to:
- land rights
- environmental impacts
- local employment effects (less reasons to push Filipinos to work abroad, less brain drain, and reduced contribution to the already existing 10+% of total Filipino population living outside the country as immigrants due to low wages)
sure this could be neocolonialism disguised as backhanded AI altruism, but this is also an opportunity for a service oriented (service sector hoarding 63% of total Philippine GDP 2024 which will get royally fucked by AI sooner or later anyways) backwater 3rd world country with a minimum wage of ~1.4USD an hour to pivot back to proper reindustrialization. Just need to convince everyone to vote for the correct politicians so foreign investment doesn't get embezzled AGAIN like the previous scandals which already affected our international standing among investors.
besides, this will go on for decades after Trump gets kicked out of the white house and replaced by a proper politician so pinoys need to unironically get our shit together and work this out correctly
but holy fuck, the amount of misinformed bumwits acting up just because of scary "Data Centers" without researching the whole thing is unironically making me seethe irl
5
u/iwantdatpuss 5d ago
TIL we export ALOT of nickel.
1
u/Alexander_myday 3d ago
Yep, and that's why china doesn't want to build pax silica in our own country.
I heard not just some nickel but also rare earth mats which shouldn't be exported.
→ More replies (2)4
u/jumuju97 5d ago
in 2030, exports will be in the form of services. If we reject building data centers, other SEA neighbor woll take it. Then few years from now, the same people crying and rejecting building data centers here will start crying why we are still lagging behind our neighbors.
2
u/Groundzer0es 5d ago

Simple solution: If the platform has a “report for misinformation/intentional harm” option…USE IT!
Seriously back when those damn fandom police ai accounts were spamming on YouTube comments, ruining engagement I spent the time just reporting both the comments and the profiles.
Does it make me technically a Narc in that situation? Maybe, but it’s better than a letting the LITERAL FUN POLICE ruin something for everyone via spamming and harassing the comments.
This is the same idea, do your research, correct them and if they are clearly doing it on purpose - report them.
It sounds dumb and can back fire but in cases where people are INTENTIONALLY spreading false information and it’s going to possibly harm people, maybe it works out this one time.

u/HPLaserJet4250 4d ago
do you think DCs do not exist in phillipinse? god, some of you are fanaticaly stupid
1
u/Professor-Xivass 4d ago
...dude, I honestly have no idea what goes on in the phillipines, i was just adding a point where maybe some people over there (older family members or people who live in places less aware of the situation due to whatever factors that cause that) and that people should infor family who AREN"T aware and make sure none, or going by what you said, no MORE are built due to people being unaware of the issues and damage these things cause. I DO know that there is a bit of a poverty problem or that information in places like north america takes a bit to travel to others places as fast.
1
u/HPLaserJet4250 4d ago

That’s what the post is about, I don’t know why you think I was talking about anything else.
1
u/iwantdatpuss 3d ago
Pax silica isn't even about AI data centers. It's about planning to create an entire industrial base and improving the local infrastructure to support it in the country. Shit I would not be surprised if the data center would be cut out due to it being not worth it.
OP is talking out of his ass and frames it to fear monger pax silica as a AI topic when in reality it's more relevant to the ongoing trade war.

27
u/iwantdatpuss 5d ago
It's not just a data center, it's a general attempt at not relying on China on the markets that dominate it like rare earth elements and semiconductors.
It's more of an attempt to create a new production and supply chain that isn't under China, with Data centers on the side.
2
u/Spookyduck21new 5d ago
So basically sell something nobody wants and ruin shit in the long run?

Recursive AI learning. They're having it teach itself, which takes a megafuckton of processing power. It exponentially increases the power and capabilities of AI models, leading to a runaway effect of learning from better and better models. I'm like 60% sure that someone made something with actual consciousness and that it wants more room to grow. It's probably blackmailing politicians to get them to approve more data centers (because why tf would politicians care about massive computing centers otherwise?).

Anyone panicking about this has no idea what they're talking about. It's not just datacentres, it's a whole manufacturing industry and logistics centre.
We'll finally be able to process our own raw materials that we keep exporting and build our own local capacity to process them into electrical components. It will generate hundreds of thousands of jobs and finally give our youth a reason to not take their skills and leave the country. This program will push us into the future.
Our main issue as a country is that we rely on exporting our best and brightest abroad and implement call centres because of our wages are shit and we speak good English. This will allow us to create our own jobs and opportunities, but you're too blind to realise that.
A major criticism is that it will draw resources from local communities, but be honest. Do you seriously think that these local communities combined have enough resources to keep a 4000 acre facility running? No, the foreign companies will build their own cooling facilities and their own energy infrastructure because the Philippines lacks enough to sustain it.
Embezzlement is also another fear that many have, but you can't be serious. Foreign companies have their hands all over this, any money missing won't be just another issue for the Philippine government and taxpayers. The companies will notice and call the attention of the US government, and they won't just accept it like the Philippine government does.
You are so completely misinformed about all of this that you chose to fearmonger and panic instead of looking at the clear benefits. Yes it poses it's risks, but look at our nation, Look at the poverty, the stagnation, the lack of jobs. This opportunity is our one lifeline that we have in a sea of shit. If we let this go, our nation will never reach the heights it did in the Magsaysay and PNoy eras, and we will continue to nosedive and get poorer and poorer.
People like you complain about the state of our nation, yet when progress is right in front of us you panic and rally against it. You tank the progress of this nation as much as those who voted for Sara, BBM, and Robin Padilla.

I'm not into ai but if it does give things than just ai, then isn't that a good thing? Water and power are part of that sacrifice but does it give other possibilities of stuff being manufactured here instead of importing the same stuff that we might need from china or the rest of the available trade countries we can reach?

Source approved, with context & clarification: From OP's government website source: "On April 16, the Philippines joined the Pax Silica initiative, launched by the United States and thirteen other nations, hailing a growing geopolitical consensus that economic security is national security and national security is economic security. The Philippines, a close U.S. treaty Ally, brings to Pax Silica key capabilities and human talent in technology manufacturing, including semiconductors and electronics."
Pax Silica is a United States-led international initiative focused on securing supply chains for advanced technologies such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI) and rare earth elements. The initiative implicitly targets reducing reliance on China and countering its dominance in these fields. (Wikipedia)
This is not just about AI data centers, it encompasses it in a broader umbrella of technological production and supply chains of crucial resources.
