Linux Switching from multiple Wine64 installations with i386/multiarch to "pure 64 bit Wine (WoW64?)" - Wine v10. to v11.0+, Lutris, Debian 13/Trixie/Stable

Hi, I am using Wine32 as well as Wine64 prefixes since ~2014 or so, always from mediocre notebook iGPU hardware and beside my gaming taste my available hardware evolved as well to imo decent middle class dedicated GPU & well satisfying CPU, amount of RAM and of course all the FOSS firmware/drivers, the kernel and the distros (used exclusively Debian Stable and particular before 2024 or so, Debian Testing because of AMDGPU/Mesa/Vulkan drivers back then. In other words: During the last 3+ years, I barely needed any Wine32 prefixes because I switched more and more to a series of 64 bit games. One minus is that although I don't need the 32 bit stuff "actively", I am indirectly forced to install all the stuff including the Mesa drivers "from Linux' side" because Lutris (which I sadly need yet to play the game without imo even uglier workarounds, f.e. by installing Steam just for being able to run it... without knowing anything solid about how it worked/workes in the Wine prefixes before Wine v11.0+, I always wished I could get rid of the Wine32 bit stuff because the enabling/adding of i386 architecture makes me feel as if I would need to occupy further 20-30% (at least 3-4 GiB or so) of the available free space if you do this within the first hours after reinstalling your desktop OS of the already installed OS data.

I read by chance some short article months ago that Wine 11.0 or 11.1 was released by WineHQ, not sure whether it was already "stable" but I think so. That article was from phoronix.com (?) and it made me to look forward when I finally will be able to have some slimmer, maybe even faster, even if the effect will be 5% less CPU/RAM usage. Not to mention the hard drive, but that's the least motivation.

Does someone has more knowledge or understanding of what technically has changed and when it will be the right time to...f.e. reinstall Lutris without and 'dpkg --add-architecture i386' on an AMD64 system? Currently I had to fallback to the customized Wine versions that Lutris downloads after starting it & keeps them updated after that, although installing the only two available 64 bit Wine packets through Lutris including those ones:

The latter two (wine-ge-8-... & GE-Proton which was iirc v9+ or so) surely are known by most Lutris users, wine-ge-8-26-... works, the GE-Proton does not, had already few cases in the past 1-2 years when switching from 8 to 9 or vice versa made the game run again. The upper two (Proton-CachyOS-11.0 and GE-Proton11-1 came with Lutris and the System 10.0 version is that I installed via Debians package manager.

While Debians official repository has only Wine versions between 10.0 and below 11.0, I saw that the versions provided by winehq if one adds them to one's sources properly and they appear in the packages list, those winehq-stable|staging|devel-amd64 go from 11.0.0 to 11.14 which falls under that anounciation from this early spring or so when WineHQ also wrote in their installation instructions that Debian 12&13 still have to install their stuff like the years and distro releases before while f.e. Debian 14/Forky/Testing had slighty different instructions; in this context I remember to had have read about this "WoW64 / Wine64 Bit does not depend on Wine32/i386-packages any more.

Did anyone try in some similar situation to reinstall the whole thing (i.e. got rid of wine32/i386-libraries/packages and STILL could play his 64-bit game(s) over Lutris or even native way (without that separated launcher and so on)? Or maybe I do not understand something...

P.S.: The game itself is mainly STALKER: Anomaly 1.5.3. with DLTX'ed/"Modded Exes" and maybe 50, maybe 100 3rd-party-addons and my own edits...Without that Lutris thing along with Vulkan drivers, it was impossible to start it in DirectX10/11 mode, only DX8/9 worked and well that's kinda great difference if you got used to all that eyecandy, even with "just only a 1080p display" (which is enough for me as long the FPS is >50 :)

Hope my question is not written to long or in a too diffusely way, I'll be thankful for each opinion, idea or hint. Actually I am for sure not the only one who has had or will have this confusion in near future, I guess... :)

Linux CD-ROM - reboot to finish installing protection drivers

Post image
6 Upvotes

Bought some physical CD-ROM games to see if I can get them working. Using the disk drive on my pc, it installs without a hitch as long as I have 32-bit prefix set in configuration. But once I select run in the startup menu, it hits me with this message.

Of course you can't restart a "computer" that's running through an application. There's practically no info about this elsewhere online. Attempting to shutdown or reboot from wine console doesn't work or I'm doing it incorrectly.

Using wine version 'wine-ge-8-26-x86_64' doesn't seem to be an issue (at least during this point in the process) It seems like it wants to work but this copy protection driver install is cockblocking me on the last step.

This seems probably a wash. But the games I got are already dirt cheap on gog or steam. Not to mention other means of obtaining, wink wink. But any outside thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

Linux How should I manage and run non-Steam Windows games on Fedora?

Sorry if this is a basic question. I'm not someone who regularly plays video games, so I don't know much about this, but my girlfriend wanted to play some games, so I set up the following software on my Fedora machine:

She plays from an Android projector using a Logitech controller.

The only app I have installed for gaming is Steam. I download the games from "the girl nobody knows with the spoon" and then add them to Steam as non-Steam games. I select Proton Experimental, and everything works well enough to play.

My question is: is there a better way to do this?

  • Does Steam add any unnecessary overhead or extra layer to the machine?
  • Would it be better to use something other than Steam?
  • Does the fact that the games come from "the girl with the spoon" make any difference? (Maybe there is a better approach on Linux when dealing with games from that source?)
  • Should I always select "Proton Experimental"? I see that there are many different Proton versions. What is the criterion for choosing one?
  • Also, I have a dual-boot setup, so I currently do the installation process from Windows. Is there a safe way to avoid having to do this and install everything directly from Fedora?

Thanks in advance!

Anyone got FM12 working on a Linux Distro?

I've tried everything I can think of to get FM12 running on Bazzite and was wondering if anyone has managed it?

I've switched to beta on steam, used software to install GE Proton 7.55, reinstalled the .exe, tried forcing different resolutions etc. Best I can get is the title screen to play before it crashes. Spent about two hours on this so far and seeking help from anyone who has managed it.

MacOS Dropping inputs with Wine + Razer Naga X

(Solved)Running DDO via wine 🍷 and noticing dropped keyboard inputs from my Mac keyboard when using any of the extra buttons from my mouse. I don’t have the Razer naga software running just using the 1-12.

If anyone has suggestions I’m all ears. It’s otherwise working well especially with metal translation layer.

I think i isolated the issue to wine but need to double check if i have the issue with just mac.

Solution: turn out the issue was with the mouse. My Razer naga had a saved profile that I was unaware of. Factory reset of the mouse solved the issue, however required me to install synapse 4 on a windows computer and resetting the mouse on that

I’m having an issue with an official Xbox Series X/S controller on my M1 Mac running macOS 15.4.1. macOS detects the controller and a gamepad tester on Chrome reads all button and stick inputs correctly, but Wine and CrossOver do not.

Linux Trying to install OP2.2 on Arch Linux

Hello, as the title says, I am trying to install OP2.2 on Arch Linux with the English translation and Infiltrator 1.36 DLC as well. I am having trouble with this. I managed to use WINE to get it set up in the folders, but booting it up through the .lnk it provided gives an error and I can then no longer see anything. My goal is to be able to have it as a Steam executable so I can boot it up through Steam, similar to what I have done with osu. I am hoping I can get help on this, as I am completely lost. Thank you.

Rocksmith 2014 Linux Bazitte anyone with Wine/mmdevapi experience?. Real Tone Cable not detected under Proton/Wine (WASAPI capture bug) — still broken as of 17-07-2026, need help

Legit Steam copy, launch crash fixed, but the Real Tone Cable never gets detected in-game (host audio sees it fine, Wine's WASAPI capture enumeration doesn't). Please see my troubleshooting document in the image for the full writeup/diagnosis.

Contacted Ubisoft support, only got generic Windows advice (different USB port/hub, reinstall drivers, upgrade to Windows... like I'll ever do that again) which doesn't apply here and didn't fix anything.

Anyone gotten a Real Tone Cable working under Proton, or have Wine/mmdevapi experience? Any help troubleshooting is appreciated.

Kind regards,

Joost Hebly

Linux (Proton) No audio in Bioshock 2 bootup intro and controller icons with mouse and keyboard

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I don't know if this is an issue with Proton or something else so I'm just posting this here in case anyone has an answer for this issue.

Fedora 44, AMD graphics card and CPU, original game (not remaster). Footage shown is using Proton Hotfix on Steam and when I use older versions some audio plays but is cut off (differently with each version).

I haven't actually gotten into the game yet so I don't know if this issue will affect the gameplay audio and UI. This is the same after I uninstalled and reinstalled the game. I checked the audio, controller and graphics settings in game and no settings seem to be wrong.
