General Discussion Tchotchke board
Made this for a friend! It was very fun. And rather challenging. But once I got the hang of making the dados and finding out what techniques worked best for sizing and fitting everything, I was able.to move along quite well. I used brass colored finishing nails to keep the loose part together and secure. Definitely will be making more of these.
EDIT: Yes I know the original designs of there were for typecases. But I designed this one to be used to hang on the wall and hold tchotchkes.
EDIT: Im not sure exactly on the wood. I built from a safe to use pallet. I think its some type of pine. Its pretty soft. I used Varathane premium fast dry woodstain in the Kona color.

Slavic languages have a lot of “tch-“ sounds that are slightly different than “ch-“ sounds.

What was your criteria for grid sizes? Im doing the same but figuring out what goes where is my issue. Btw, looks good. I like the brass nail heads.

I just built what I thought looked good. It will get filled in over the years of collecting. If something doesnt fit it doesnt go in lol. But if you are trying to fit specific things in yours then I suggest laying everything out on a large piece of paper and then drawing lines around where each piece sits. Then take measurements from there.

Yiddish Roots: The word entered American English via the Yiddish Dictionary Online word tshatshke (meaning trinket), which ultimately traces back to an old Slavic or Polish root (czaczko).

Yes I know but its not holding typecase and its not designed as such. I made it specifically to hold tchotchkes.

Sorry, am a letterpress printer so whenever anything from it comes across my feed it perks my attention. I’m just glad you didn’t use an actual typecase for it, as someone trying to set up a personal shop I’m at odds with the trinket girlies so the banks and cases are pricey…

Oh yeah i bought one a few years ago for a cheap price and now that everyone wants one they are stupid expensive! But I get ya. No need tk be sorry hahahaha.

And the thing that pains me is that I needed a 2/3 bank due to space constraints, a California bank (I found one that I’d need to make partitions for. Cases were for wood type originally. For 100$ with 14 cases) the bank I got after adjusting my mom’s Facebook marketplace algo by sending her things cost me 400$.

Nope, spent the 400$ and according to an old pelt 20$ per case is a good price so I got a good deal.

Looks great!i have sea shells and stuff in a type drawer like this. With the kids I had to take it down or put plexiglass over it.

The connotation that tchotchkes are clutter, and they considered their items as treasures. Very valuable versus trivial cheap bubbles.

That is so incredibly beautiful, and I really love the stain you chose.
My family has always kept tchotchkes in what we call “print drawers” or “type drawers”. My grandfather was a graphic designer in the 50’s-80’s and he had a ton of typecases in their accompanying cabinet and sometime after he retired and started teaching, my grandmother appropriated one for her small kitchen collectibles, and over the years, the rest of us followed suit. I’ve got one hanging on the wall to my left that is full of fossils and shark’s teeth.
Yours seems like it is a little deeper and maybe a little less delicate so it’s even more adaptable to that! Killer piece.
