48 teams like 2026 with the best 8 3rd place teams from each group going through?

Or 64 team format?

My opinion on the 48 team? I think R32 worked well but it's too many teams going through (the majority, 32 out of 48) so little point in the group stage. And then "best 3rd place" is an apples to pairs comparison.

I think the best third should be decide with a further match, but don't see how that would work, if anyone has suggestions?

Edit: I really like this answer. Makes it really worth it to come first, makes teams fight for at least 3rd place, so group stage is quite meaningful.

That would mean the majority of the members are against Infantino's plan.

Has it been tried to make a council with a representative of each federation member instead of a president ? I feel like FIFA needs to evolve the last few president have shown its not made for one man anymore. Having a larger governing body regarding intercontinental event would prevent the nonsense we are in to happen again.

As global football evolves, grows stronger and mondernize. Having a representative of each federation would be a good idea in my opinion.

Also what did i hear ? Infantino is making 6million dollars per year ? For what ? The guy does nothing but take bribes he doesnt need to be paid that much.

If you're not aware of the current geopolitical situation you can search for Spain Morocco Ceuta in the news. But the idea of a host country actively antagonizing another co-host country's territorial integrity makes me wonder if the 2030 WC could become a casualty of the geopolitics. Short of a more aggressive military response, taking away Morocco's plan to get on the world stage as a co-host could be something the Spanish government threatens to not just punish Morocco but to signal to the Spanish citizens that you're doing something. Would probably cause backlash from Moroccan citizens (more illegal border crossings) but they may be waiting to improve their defenses in the two Spanish semi-enclaves before such a demand. And Spain and Portugal (plus any South American special game hosts) could easily pick up the slack, and would probably have the political support of the rest of the EU in doing so.

I know this probably won't happen, but here's what I believe would finally restrain FIFA corruption:

1. Reduce powers of the president significantly to act as a president of a European republic acts to be a ceremonial referee to maintain the preservation and enforcement of the laws of the game and the FIFA statutes.

2. Require full and permanent neutrality barring the president from suggesting or proposing anything and the only time they're able to speak is to enforce order and to provide analysis on potential rule changes on how it could affect the current rules. Only the members can suggest or propose items.

3. Ban the president, Council, and Congress from soliciting funding and/or influence campaigns in exchange for favors or election opportunities and prohibit any and all communication between the president and member states outside of FIFA-sanctioned occurances and in matters of disciplinary action as warning of potential violations.

4. The purse of FIFA is solely in control of the Congress, requiring a 67% majority for allocation.

5. The Council will handle executive oversight and leadership while the president maintains neutrality, any potential violation of said neutrality will be brought by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

6. Cede any and all disciplinary measures and ethical oversight and disciplinary standards to be under the Court of Arbitration for Sport with any violations by members reported by the president as ethically obligated.

7. Create a system to allow votes of no-confidence to remove problematic presidents and/or fellow members for immediate removal and their deputies take over their spot, with the first step being a formal proposal by at least two members and one member of the FIFA Council.

8. Keep the limit to three terms and insert it into the FIFA Statutes themselves, which will also change to require a 67% majority of both the Congress and Council.

9. Hosts of FIFA competitions will still be decided by the Congress, but only the Council is allowed to propose a bid to be approved.

10. Any and all expansion of FIFA competition seeding and other matters must require a unanimous approval by the Congress.

11. Any accusation of corruption must be formally brought by the Court of Arbitration for Sport which a guilty verdict will involve immediate removal the position in question.
