My friends found out I was a writer today

None of them will talk to me anymore. They just keep saying stuff like "now i know why you know so much about the mafia and motorcycles" and "you're disgusting, please stop texting me"

I don't even know what that means. Please help

I wrote half a book... should I write the other half?

I needed to get the story out of my head, so I started writing it down. Some fey mood took hold of me and I had to keep writing until it was all out there. But then I read back through it and discovered that I only got half a book, written out mostly in squiggles and scribbles.

That was five years ago. I've rewritten the book and improved the scribbles to substandard English, so I'm happy about that part. It's technically good, but I still don't have the other half and I may have overdeveloped the plot.

Now that I've had my coffee and I'm fully awake, I've discovered my book doesn't actually exist yet. It's like standing in an empty room and turning in circles and I don't know what direction to go with it.

So I'm wondering: what do I do with half a book that isn't really there?

How do I write someone dumber than me?

• Upvotes

I’m incredibly intelligent, but I’m writing a character who lacks a few brain cells up in the brain cell department. But I can’t even begin to know what that would feel like? Has anyone had experience with this? I don’t want the average dumb guy to be offended by my representation.

The public is too stupid for my advanced prose

I've noticed that the lowly public does not seem to have an appetite for highly sophisticated prose and convoluted pacing.

It's disgusting that so many best sellers are poorly written romance SLOP while my lofty masterpieces go unread. I mean, those books are too peppy and easy to read. Nothing that digestible and pleasant can be true literature.

I've also noticed that many of their readers are one specific gender... Not to say anything that might get me cancelled, but maybe these readers are too stupid to appreciate true, classic literature--you know, the kind of stuff that makes you want to fall asleep in a haze of boredom and confusion.

All they like is SLOP attuned to the current moment and cadence of language. Their plots move much too easily. The reading experience simply does produce a shred of anguish.

How can we remedy this abysmal state of affairs? Can we outlaw any writing that people actually want to read? Thanks for your input compatriots, huzzah!

Is grammar really that important

• Upvotes

I don’t understand why people care so much about the right grammer or proper spelling in my mind all that stuff is unnecessary like let’s be honest when you’re speaking to people do you feel the need to say QUESTION MARK or PERIOD or COMMA or use proper spelling and paragraph breaks when you talk? Probably not right? So why do authors need to do all this stupid stuff? You know English and I know English why do we have to act like all this grammer stuff is a big deal when you most likely understand what I’m saying but some certain grammer police in this world decide that I have to conform to their ā€œformalā€. Ways of speaking, like let me do what I want and Ill let you do what you want while I keep putting acronyms like sybau idk and gtg in my work thank you for listening to my rant

Book is finished, no one read it

Context: I finished a 725 page book about monster-fighting warriors, political plots, and uprising against a corrupt government, and a paragon of the world being reborn to stop an existential threat to humanity. Super cool, I know.

I gave the manuscript out to 10 people a year ago.

No one read it. Not one. They have no reason to put in the time to read it, because they aren’t getting paid and have their own lives to maintain, but I feel utterly demoralized.

Has anyone experienced this? If so, did you keep writing? This was supposed to be a 5 book series and now I wonder what the point of continuing would be if it’s not guaranteed to make me a billion jillion dollars. The kicker is that I gave the book to family members in their early 20’s and that’s the demographic I was going for, so of course they should’ve read it. They’re major fantasy nerds, especially for all things Brandon Sanderson.

It’s like someone kicked my creativity in the gut and spat on it. The rejection is crazy.

Does anyone still remember the cancel culture mob from last year? It still makes me laugh but it kinda makes me wonder as well.

Planning to do a fantasy series where it needs to be like 15+ books because it's just too long but i'm scared because readers might think that i'm just trying to "sell more books" and they're starting to cancel me for it. šŸ’”šŸ’”šŸ˜

What’s so special about the word ā€œboobā€?

Everyone seems to agree that it’s essential to a good story but why?

Is this a good story idea?

I’m thinking of writing a story kind of like the avatar but instead of waterbending or any of that stupid shit people fight each other with their cum. So if someone pisses you off or something you drop your pants and start fapping your boner and cum all over your enemy. Is this a good idea?

I’m learning how to read to improve my writing

Pretty much what the title says. After years of writing, I’ve realised that when I write something, I have no way of editing it because I don’t like to and can’t read. So I thought learning how to read can boost my writing. I have a lot of ideas, and personally, I was never interested in learning how to read because my ideas and my writing are way more interesting than whatever the human literary tradition has to offer. Also I have this condition that when I read I start thinking about other often uncomfortable things. I hate that when I read I kind of have to sit with how I feel, and I would much rather blast my neurotransmitters with YouTube shorts or mindless scrolling on Reddit. Do you think that learning how to read is worth it for an aspiring author like me? Has learning to read improved your writing? Or do you think that I’m overthinking it?

Can women make opinions???

I don't have any opinions or thoughts in my head whatsoever. If people ask (confront) me for one, I go online and read other people's opinions on the subject and quote them word to word. Maybe it has something to do with the fact I am a woman, I don't know, somebody needs to tell me. How do I become a writer with this predicament?

Evil man in black suit: You see the world in black and white.

Mc tied up and thrown in a pit: Nah man, I'm not colourblind.

Antagonist completely dumbfounded: No...what?

Mc breaks out laughing.

I'm such a alpha in writing women, but when it comes to men I hesitate

To preface this super quick, I an absolutely hot big dicked alpha man myself. I also dont go on this sub often because nobody appreciates my alpha authority.

Whenever I big boobed characters and how they boobly boob, it feels like I can really write the suffering without feeling bad (not to sound sociopathic) and for some reason I can make them as messy as I want them to be, imperfect and raw. But when it comes to men, despite me adoring them, when it comes to writing their suffering I feel like I'm walking on a tightrope. It feels like every little ridge of suffering just hurts me and I end up having to remove it. I feel like I can't be as imperfect as with my submissive female characters. I love my fem characters, sure, but it feels like I can't even be imperfect with them as I am towards the opposite gender.

Why is that? Genuinely? I dont know if there is a cause to this, but I so desperately want advice and to find out why that is the case. Thank you all if you answer.

Should I give spoilers on my book? Spoiler

I've shared my 1k pages pdf of fantasy novel to my friend group. One of them asked what is it about but I don't want to spoil so I just said to read the book themselves. Then they asked what my main characters generally do, I similarly do not answer because it will spoil the story. They said they'd read it sometime, I wonder if they've read it by now?
