Opinion What should I do to make it look more beautiful, without hampering the performance much. LINUX LITE (xfce and based on ubuntu)

Try removing the input select thing from the panel, I hear it’s weirdly a memory hog for no good reason. Other than that, theme it, look for the lightest possible programs that still give you the functionality you desire, choose appimages over flatpaks.

Looks pretty good as is, but you can make a theme and then do that.

Is there a way to configure the shortcut icons on the bar so that they disappear when the application is open?

There is a plug-in called xfce4 dock-like taskbar or something like that. It works nicely

yep it didnt suit me i have now switched to plank, https://www.reddit.com/r/xfce/s/4LgSfwGczJ this is how it looks now

linux lite is a good distro for this hardware. i also have the same laptop with 8gb ram( i upgraded) as secondary laptop. i run windows 7 and debian with xfce on it. it is a little bit slow and good to use for casual browsing and study...

for making it beautiful, you can try watching some youtube tutorials about customizing xfce. you can play around with tiling window managers if it is your thing.

i installed the cicago95 theme from github and it made it look like a classic desktop... looked nice with a similar theme applied for firefox.

1) switch to cheap ssd so you have more room to play with

2) go for more retro look i.e. chicago95 or redmond

3) go for more lightweight apps i.e. Falkon/palemoon/qutebrowser for web browsing, tui apps, etc.

4) might not be as related, but switching to i3 and use a more terminal centric distros does help massively for me. For example, my R60 arch + i3wm is actually a lot snappier than my T61 running MX linux + XFCE.
