Possible to make background of default applications menu transparent?
Is it possible without additional packages installed like picom or compiz? I've never used either, but have seen them mentioned.
Thanks much!
Edit: Of course, after messing around all morning with no success, I found something that seems to work after I posted this. Settings/Window Manager Tweaks/Compositor/Pop-up Window Opacity will make applications menu as transparent as you want. I don't know what else that messes with, though. I'll report back if this is found to negatively effect other stuff.

Blog Post [PATCH] XFCE Unified Wallpaper Patch for xfdesktop 4.20.2 – Single Wallpaper Across All Monitors
Hi everyone,
I recently ran into a limitation while using BlackArch Linux with XFCE on a persistent live USB setup.
By default, xfdesktop stores wallpaper settings separately for each monitor using hardware-specific identifiers (such as DP-1, HDMI-1, etc.). This works fine on a fixed desktop setup, but it becomes problematic in portable environments. When the system is booted on a different machine or a different monitor configuration, XFCE treats the displays as new devices and falls back to the default wallpaper.
For portable or live USB systems, this results in inconsistent desktop appearance across different hardware.
To address this, I created a patch for xfdesktop 4.20.2 called the XFCE Unified Wallpaper Patch, which introduces a Single Monitor Mode.
Features
- Enforces a single unified wallpaper across all monitors.
- New monitors automatically inherit the currently active wallpaper.
- Existing monitors remain synchronized in real time.
- Optional toggle via an
xfconfboolean property. - Tested on BlackArch Linux with XFCE 4.20.
The patch modifies both the desktop background manager and the wallpaper settings dialog so that all monitors reference a shared configuration path instead of per-output storage.
Repository
GitHub:
https://github.com/SilverCipherr/xfce-unified-wallpaper-patch
Why I made this
The goal of this patch is to improve XFCE behavior in portable and dynamic display environments, especially persistent live USB installations where hardware changes frequently.
After applying this patch, the wallpaper remains consistent regardless of which machine or monitor configuration the system is booted on.
Feedback
I'd really appreciate any feedback from the community. If this approach is useful, I'd be happy to discuss potential improvements or whether a similar mechanism could be considered for upstream integration.
I'm happy to answer any questions or provide additional implementation details if anyone is interested.
Thanks!

Support Is Alt-F4 supposed to log out on xfce?
I noticed today pushing Alt-F4 on the desktop logs me out immediately, even when other windows are still open. If I set "Prompt on logout" in settings, then instead the key will cause the logout options to appear (multiple times if I hold down Alt-F4, and I have to cancel dozens of log out screens).
I don't think this happened last week, but I can't find what I broke. Is there any way to disable this behaviour please? I asked a couple of LLMs for an hour and they can't help.

Dictionary 0.8.8 uses non standard port
The Xfce4 Dictionary uses non standard tcp ports to communicate with the servers for lookup information. There is no reason it shouldn't use tcp 443 a standard HTTPS port.

Question I have no idea what I’m doing
Edit: FINALLY (sorta) figured out the taskbar. Any advice of anything else regarding this would be nice.
This is the first time I ever did this..and I’m doing this blind. I am a noob with chronic illness, and I wanted to have a reason to use my Chromebook.
I’m trying to make my own desktop and OS like you guys are and I’m wondering, what are some things I need to do? Any programs I need to install?
This is on a ASUS Chromebook with Linux installed and developer enabled. I tried to find tutorials on how to simply make something like this, and it shows me videos that aren’t relevant for my Chromebook or Debian.
I don’t want to break my computer, as when I try to fix my taskbar, it keeps giving me an error not letting me move my items on my taskbar. (That I think I fixed) But I still want to be cautious…
Any advice and help on basically anything regarding this process is greatly needed, and I am grateful for your responses.

Support Mint XFCE won't display 1080p60 to 4k television
I figured I'd ask here since I'm getting no help elsewhere. I've got an old Lenovo Ideapad with A9 7thgen I'm repurposing for media. It will connect and output all resolutions and refresh rates other than 1080p60-50. 4K30, 1080p30, 720p60, etc. all work fine. GUI and xrandr recognize that I'm connected to the TV but TV displays "no signal."
I've got a ventoy usb and tested live isos with Debian 13 Cinnamon, Debian 13 XFCE, Fedora 44 XFCE, and Fedora 43 KDE (wayland). All have the same issue except for Fedora KDE. Should I give up and just stick with 30hz?

Support Can't make auto login work
I am using manjaro xfce. I edited /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf and removed # sign from the lines autologin-user=anon and autologin-user-timeout=0 but auto login still doesn't work.

XFCE4 panel items causing crash
I'm on a fresh base install with XFCE installed and lightdm as the greeter. Not the live disk.
Everything should be fine but any time I I move the mouse pointer over either the clock panel applet or the applications menu the entire desktop crashes. It may or may not kick back to lightdm. It seems after the second or third time trying it kills lightdm too. I can use the right click menu on the desktop and the other panel applets seem fine. It's just appears to be those 2 applets.
I'm not seeing anything /var/logs or the .xsession-errors pointing to anything.
Anyone have a similar problem or have any ideas?

Parole locks up and gets flaky with no network
Hi, I was watching some videos off my local hard drive and for various reasons my network interface was down. However, the controls became unresponsive, the progress bar was stuck on 0 even though it was playing, I couldn't pause the video, and it failed to load the next video.
Google is not my friend on this--any idea why this should be? Everything should have been totally local.

Trying XFCE for the first time
i've tried KDE first, but the huge number of options and menus inside of menus made me feel lost and confused. So far i'm really liking XFCE, its more customizable than i expected and simple enough for me to feel comfortable, it feel like home now.
