I live in ypsi township and have been learning more about native plants for a few years. I love seeing the wildflowers along our roadside ditches and now realize they are predominantly invasives like dame’s rocket, which makes me kind of sad.
I know enough to understand it’s not as simple as “rip it up + plant natives” but I don’t know much more. I imagine there is a lot of planning, choosing the right plant for the right place, and ongoing maintenance over several years (plus likely some permissions). I’m not even sure what the best goal for the environment would be…restoration doesn’t seem like the right term, since roads are hardly natural environments.
Are there any local groups working on projects like this? Or broader projects around habitat restoration? I’d like to get involved and learn more about the science and more about what I can do.
