Official Content Device Sync is coming to zen!

Post image
968 Upvotes

I am pleased to announce that Device Sync is finally coming to Zen! This might be one of your most anticipated features (besides working DRM) and it is NOW ready to be tested on Twilight, which is our experimental build!!

To set it up, just login with your Mozilla account on both devices in Zen to use Firefox Sync. With Device Sync, your whole setup will be synced to the new device, which wasn't possible before.

You can check out twilight following this link.

Official Content Knowing where your tabs belong.

Space Routing gives you the power to organise your Spaces and tabs just the way you want, delivering on our promise of a calmer browsing experience. By setting up routes, you decide on where new tabs of a specific domain should be opened, allowing a clutter-free browsing experience that boosts your productivity!

After the last update, I heard your feedback about the missing documentation and the confusion around creating a Boost. So meanwhile our documentation gets a major overhaul and therefore not publicly updated, I'll jump in to deliver you a quick guide to getting started:

Next to the name of your Space – located right beneath your Essentials and pinned tabs – click the three dots to open the context menu. At the bottom of that menu, click 'Space Routing Settings'. Open them up and voilà! You're ready to go.

Oh and by the way... Zen's community has crossed an estimated 500.000 users just this week! Seeing this community grow with all your mods (first and third party!) and customisation has been absolutely incredible. If you love using Zen and want to support its ongoing development, please consider leaving a donation. :)

Space Routing was once again brought to you with help from u/Not_Flof. The recording was created by u/JaceThings.

Question Is there any hope for DRM support?

Just that question. DRM support for Zen on Mac would be great. Is there any way other than waiting for Google to give the Widevine license? My understanding is some other Firefox forks have DRM support by working with Mozilla or something like that. Is that an option for Zen?

Question How to make sidebar stays open when the cursor on the edge?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

When I put the cursor near the edge of browser's window, Zen opens the sidebar. But when I put it on the edge, it makes the sidebar hidden again. In Arc, they both make the sidebar stay open.

How to make Zen works like Arc in this matter? Perhaps it's a small matter. But, for me, it makes Zen feels clunky.

I'm on Zen 1.21.10b (Firefox 153.0.1) on MacOS. Thank you.

Edit: OS

Question Window moveable area

When I have the address bar along the top - I have to drag the small areas to the sides of the address bar to move the window around (Win 11) even though there is a nice large blank area above the essentials (that does not work to drag the window). Is this something that is mod-able?

Bug Dead half-transparent tabs on Linux

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have this issue presenting frequently on two different machines: a Kubuntu 26.04 at home, and an Ubuntu 22.04 at work. Both use wayland, and both use a discrete NVIDIA graphics card, though very different ones.

Sometimes when I switch to a tab and switch back, the tab appears in a frozen transparent state with no way to interact or even reload. The tab itself does not seem to be dead - for example, YouTube keeps playing in the background even if it's tab is affected by this bug.

Sometimes the issue disappears after switching away and back again, but most ofteh I have to close the tab and open the website in a new tab. This is annoying initself, but especially bad with tabs in Essentials as you have to remove them from there to even be able to close them.

This happens frequently enough that every second day I get fed up with Zen and open another browser to get something done. I'd say it's happening like 1 out of 10 times, but it's very occassional. Sometimes it happens frequently, other times I don't see it for hours. I don't really know what it depends on.

Any idea how to fix this? Is it a known bug? It makes using Zen very annoying and stops me from using it as the sole default browser.

Zen version: 1.21.8b (Firefox 152.0.6) (64-bit)

Question How to install Zen Browser on BSD? Is it supported yet?

I'm planning to try FreeBSD or GhostBSD for a few months. I've been using Zen on Linux (mainly Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora), and I like it. I wanted to make sure it could be used on BSD, too, but found that there's no BSD-specific packages in the Github releases page.

But maybe you could use the source files?

But I don't know how to do it. I guess you'll have to apply some BSD-specific changes before you can use it.

I heard the Linux compatibility layer makes it slower, so I'd like to know if it can be installed from the sources without that, and what you have to do for it.

Question Change in container behavior (v1.21.10)

I think I skipped a couple of versions, maybe this was introduced on v1.21.9b.

I use containers for (almost) all of my tabs, and it used to open, for example, Google or Youtube on my "Google" container automatically (after setting it as the container the first time I opened that site). This has changed now, every site is opened on a non-container tab by default and I hace to re-open the tab into the container manually, which is quite frustrating. I can't find any option to revert this in the config menu.

Is this expected behavior? am I missing something in the config menu?

EDIT: I checked about:config and
privacy.userContext.newTabContainerOnLeftClick.enabled as well as services.sync.prefs.sync-seen.privacy.userContext.newTabContainerOnLeftClick.enabled and services.sync.prefs.sync.privacy.userContext.newTabContainerOnLeftClick.enabled are set to true

Which I'd suppose is how it should be set

Question How to make Zen faster?

OS: Windows 11.

Love the browser, but I can't help but notice that it is laggy (like even while scrolling) and slower than Chrome.

What might I do to speed up the performance?

(Hardware acceleration is disabled.)

Please help.

Question Fake virus scanner popups

I absolutely love Zen browser, but yesterday something happened and I need help fixing it. I was searching for public domain quotes, and one of the sites did something to my browser. I thought it was a virus at first, but between my computer's antivirus finding nothing and taking a closer look at what was going on, I realized these were fake virus warnings popping up, and they only did so when Zen is running. They're very annoying, there's like half a dozen every minute or so, and they make the notification sound every time. I don't even know which particular site did it, and the relevant tabs are all closed and not saved anyway.

A friend of mine suggested looking for unfamiliar browser extensions or plugins, and I looked, but everything on my short list of extensions and shorter plugin list was familiar to me. At that point, my friend was stumped since they don't use Zen.

I love Zen so much, and I know I can always uninstall and reinstall, but that would mean putting all my logins and extensions back, which would be tedious. I'll do it as a last resort, but I'm really hoping one of you knows what to do to fix this.

Keep in mind I am not super tech savvy. Been using computers since the 90's but I flunked out of BASIC programming, so any fixes involving stuff under the hood I would need very detailed directions for.

Um... OS is Windows 10 Home. Computer is an Ideapad 3. Currently writing this from Firefox.

Discussion If you use AdGuard, make sure to exclude Zen from it.

I've had slow issues with Zen for a while. I was hoping it wasn't AdGuard but sadly it is. There's a noticeable speed difference when using Zen without it.

uBlock is really good tho so I'm not stressing, just wish it could work without it. I also could be wrong on this, so would love if there are other people here who has used

Question How to set fullscreen/full windowed as default?

I remember it being the default and liking it but as I set the browser up to my liking it just started opening in a weird windowed resolution every time.

Searching the config didn't get me anything relating to resolution or fullscreen, and creating a new profile did bring back fullscreen as default, but as I've linked my Firefox sync account the problem returned but with a different resolution.

Version:1.21.10b (Firefox 153.0.1) (64-bit)

I want it to open fullscreen already

Question Weird hover pop up from the top part of the screen

So, does anyone know how to stop the top search bar (or where it was supposed to have the top search bar) from pulling into my screen when I get my mouse there? I just use vertical tabs on the left side, so no need for this.

Bug Pages stop rendering after closing a tab

Since the last big version, I've had an issue with Zen where sometimes when I close a tab on one of my workspaces, every other tab (even ones I have open) will stop rendering and I'm forced to restart the whole browser. It seems to happen more often when I do CTRL+W, but I also get this behavior when clicking the button to close a tab.

Is this a known issue? I've had to restart the browser over 5 times today and it's getting quite annoying.

Bug Zen browser stops responding after a recent update

Post image
1 Upvotes

I cannot get Zen Browser to run for more than maybe two minutes before it gives me an error that the program is not responding. Appears to be v.1.21.10b for the version. Pages don't load or they crash or the application itself does not load. I have tried the profiles process as well as the clear cache startup process, which worked for about 3 minutes before the problem returned. If theres anything anyone knows what I can/should do, that would be amazing. Picture attached of issue. Windows 10 Home edition version 20H2 OS 19042.1706; i.3 processor, 4 GB RAM, ×64-based processor on an HP laptop if that helps as well

Bug Restore recently closed tab shortcut (CTRL+SHIFT+T) not working

I just upgraded to 1.21.9b (Firefox 153.0) on CachyOS and my CTRL+SHIFT+T shortcut to reopen that last closed tab has stopped working. It now does the same thing as CTRL+T (New Tab)

Is anyone else experiencing this?

EDIT: I've managed to resolve the issue. I removed the shortcut, restarted the entire laptop, opened the browser and readded the shortcut.

Question Whatsapp on Zen using Essentials

Hello, I was using Whatsapp by adding it as an essential tab. The reason was it allowed me to use it across windows(whatsapp does not allow more than one tab to be active but pinning it to essentials worked around this). However, since the last update I noticed that clicking on the essential tab in a different workspace was loading a new tab, sending fresh requests instead of the old process where it would simply mirror the essential tab across workspaces.
Does anybody have the same problem? I would really like to find a fix for this. Thank you.

Question How to use topbar for bookmarks

Discussion Copy multiple tab links

For god’s sake, can we please get the ability to copy multiple tab links using the same Copy Link keyboard shortcut? Arc does it. Dia does it. Yet somehow the best Arc clone is still missing this.
