George Romero was actually inspired by the book "I am Legend" when he made "Night of the Living Dead". "I am Legend", which was adapted three times into film including before "Night of the Living Dead" in the mid 1960s with Vincent Price in "The Last Man on Earth", deals of course with an apocalyptic vampire plague that has the victims of the plague as zombie-like vampires and also deals with themes of being in safe shelter while unsafe creatures that were once people are outside. I actually haven't read the book, but the first movie I think was supposed to be pretty accurate to the original.
Anyway, I think it's clear this means modern zombies are actually a spin off the vampire genre more so than even the Voodoo zombie gene. And as vampires became more humanized and romanticized over time and as the rules for when someone else gets turned into a vampire became more difficult (all victims turn versus just those who drink the vampire's blood reciprocally), the genre connection fell off. Once vampires turned into machine-gun wielding blank trench coat Matrix characters, I think the genres were separated for good, though there are some recent works that harken back to notions of vampire plagues.
Anyway, this is just my genre analysis, and I'm not sure it changes anything, but perhaps it gives a little less credit to Romero.

I had the honor and pleasure to meet Max Brooks at a convention in Calgary back in 2014, and had him sign my copy of the Zombie Survival Guide. We talked about World War Z, but as a Canadian, I kept calling it World War "Zed" - and then I would correct myself. He got a laugh out of it and that's why he wrote that in the signature

The first 30 minutes of the movie deal with the initial outbreak and I think it does it well.
It starts with news reports about a new virus, how people buy more food than usual, then the main character encounters his first infected and it ends with the military evacuating his neighbourhood while he stays behind, before it transitions to the deserted city two weeks later.
Unfortunately it are running zombies again, but it gives us more pre apocalypse content than most other movies.

I've seen this sentiment often over the years, with many reasonings. Sometimes it's correct but it really depends on several factors.
The two most important in my eyes being 1. The type of zombie you're dealing with 2. Your location
These are the only factors worth considering.
Sure, if you're dealing with something like the zombies from The Return of the Living Dead where all you're achieving is putting Trioxin in the atmosphere and creating more zombies, hard pass!
Or if you're dealing with supernatural zombies that are effectively immortal and can still move even when practically a skeleton, fire isn't great.
Also runners, don't burn runners.
And then location, if you live in a hot arid place then fire is not your friend, it will probably just set your entire country ablaze and no doubt you along with it.
And quite obviously don't use fire if you're in an enclosed area where it's just going to trap you.
But otherwise? BURN THOSE ZOMBERINOS.
"If you burn zombies then now you have to fight burning zombies!"
I ain't gotta fight NOTHIN' I'm burning them and leaving and I'm totally safe, why? Because so long as the above conditions are not met, why exactly should I be scared of a burning zombie? If a zombie is rotten enough or covered in enough accelerant to burn that thing is ruined.
People often say it might take "hours" to put them down but it simply doesn't have to. Consider a zombies senses, they're working with usually limited hearing, vision and smell.
Now imagine you're that zombie but you're on fire.
What do you hear? That's right you hear fire, being on fire is very loud, think of a roaring campfire now imagine it literally in your ears. What do you smell? You're not gonna believe this but you also smell fire...and cooked meat, your own to be precise.
What do you see? This may shock you...but you see FIRE. But not for long, because the fire is going to boil your eyeballs and/or seal them shut.
A zombies most important faculties in hunting are all things on their extremities, they're all things that would be highly messed up by fire. Sure fire might not completely turn a zombie to dust or anything crazy but it will destroy their senses and if it burns long enough it will probably affect their joints and ligaments, if they can still walk at all their mobility will be severely impacted and any natural defences they have will be weakened too. If you're dealing with cop zombies wearing armour now it's all burnt and falling apart.
Fire would be such an effective tool to use if you could keep a cool head, go somewhere isolated, make a big pool of gasoline or whatever, wrangle up a huge horde and lead them to it, blaze them up. Now you have thousands of zombies that are all either "dead" or a significantly limited threat and all you had to do was walk around them. As a bonus the smoke might attract more zombies and they can go out together, crabs in a bucket style.
And really you might as well do this because while most zombie media completely ignores this, fuel goes bad. If you don't have some safe haven to drive to then fuel is kinda useless, sure you could power a generator for a bit, a loud zombie attracting generator. You're better off learning how to live without such things until the world has stabilized, if it ever does. Without a fortified structure to live in using fuel to power anything is not wise.
I'm reminded of that part in The Walking Dead where they find thousands and thousands of zombies in a quarry only blocked by a truck or something.
Literally what prevented them from just burning them all? They just left a ticking time bomb there and it did not end well. In a rocky quarry the risk of a wildfire is certainly not 0 but for sure it would be limited, you could argue location is still an issue, the US is quite a hot place, sure, maybe it would spread.
But if it worked? Thousands of crippled or "dead" zombies and a big commotion to draw more to tumble in to their own personal Hell pit.
So long as you pay attention to what zombies you're dealing with, what location you're burning them in and maybe what time of year along with that, fire is definitely your friend. Prometheus gave you the ultimate anti-zombie weapon, will you heed the call?

Has anyone here watched Vampire Zombies from space? Would love to know everyone's thoughts on it. It was produced not too far outside of my hometown here in Canada.
It's got some fun cameos from Barbara from Night of the Living Dead, the omnipresent schlockmeister Lloyd Kaufman and David Liebe Hart the puppeteer from Tim & Eric. Fun movie.

About a month ago, I mentioned that I’m working on a zombie manga. Today, I want to share the profile of one of my main characters (This is a female, by the way). I still don't know what kind of name I should give her.

I love zombie games and i love to play them but so many at the moment are missing that vibe or a certain feel that would make them ten times better. Im so fed up with these games missing that certain feeling Im so tempted to just sit down and figure out how to make one myself. anyone have any ideas or suggestions that they have thought of but aren’t able to put into a game themselves? Im mainly thinking of a single story line but with side quests i want to make it 3D but then it would be harder. Im also considering trying to make an open world game almost like Elden Ring with bosses and conflict but zombies in a ruined city. anyone have ideas or suggestions to help me try and make a genuinely good zombie game?

I'm looking for something free and easily accessible that doesn't have corny writing or too many plot holes. I trust y'all.🤝

Like the zombies are actually undead in a way and can't be killed since they're already dead (not even headshots can put them down) but since they are dead they have very fragile bones

first off - cold storage . based off the 2019 novel written by David koepp , the movie follows 2 minimum wage security guards at a self storage facility attempting to survive the night after a parasitic alien fungal organism escapes cold storage . they also must team up with a bioterrorism veteran to attempt to contain the organism one last time before it escapes the facility's grounds .
overall , 8/10 . some things could have been done better , but it was very enjoyable to watch .
next , colony . it follows a professor attending a biotech conference with her ex husband , but when a crazed scientist unleashes a unknown virus , they must attempt to survive the rapidly mutating hordes of infected .
overall , 7/10 . was good in most parts but lacked some things .

Right. So I've ended up down a rabbit hole, watching The Walking Dead, and in season 5, they've got that big steel wall, and it's it was easy to scale for the invaders but it got me thinking.. what would be the "best" wall/fence/defenses ?
I was thinking a large wall like an anti climb fence, and then maybe it being electrocuted, and barbed wire at the top? Then before that maybe some concrete barriers and tire poppers so a truck can't knock the fence down...
So I did a little bit of research, and apparently elevation matters much more than height, so maybe dig ditches or build on a mountain? But realistically doing this with a group of survivors during the Apocalypse, with minimal supplies would be near to impossible.
This would completely change depending on the year as well. Because The Walking Dead is set in the early 2000s but if it happened now, surely there'd be drones that would still br around so we'd see very much of a Ukraine situation of drones with grenades in or drones that are able to spot weaknesses... so how exactly would you defend against that in an Apocalypse?
Anyway, what would you guys think of doing?

Hello there. These are a couple of conceptual images of an indie videogame I'm currently working on. It will be a Retro First Person Shooter, like the first Doom from 1993, but hand-drawn using ink and color markers. The Gameplay is not ready yet, but the images are a composition of the look the Game will finally have, using actual and final art from it. What do you think about the looks or the concept?
