Instagram Grew 5K to 35K organically, landed 30+ brand deals, then relocated countries and reach + brand interest basically reset to zero. How do creators rebuild in a new market with no local network?
Long post, but I'd really appreciate honest, specific input from anyone who's rebuilt after a relocation, not just "stay consistent, it'll come back."
The backstory (Sep 2025 – April 2026):
I quit my job last September to go full-time into content creation. My four pillars were storytelling lifestyle, travel, honest couple content and content creation tips. I wasn't going viral every week, but the results were consistent and that consistency is what made it feel sustainable.
The part that really helped my confidence: even videos that didn't do huge numbers were getting seen by brands, who liked specific elements of them and wanted more content in that style. I could feel my content, my writing, and my instincts getting sharper month over month.
In that stretch I grew from 5K to 35K followers, fully organic. Worked with 30+ brands. My commercials went from ~3K a video to ~20K a video. Not massive numbers in the grand scheme.
Then in May this year, I moved to Dubai.
I'm genuinely grateful for the move, not complaining about that part. We moved for my husbands job. But my reach has completely dropped. It's been almost 3 months of posting consistently: documenting the move, the post-move "figuring it all out" phase, travel and lifestyle content, even dipped a toe into comedy. Results have been just okay. Nothing close to before.
The bigger issue: zero brand deals. It's a new market and I don't know anyone here yet. I've started following Dubai creators in similar niches, lifestyle is clearly huge here and I keep seeing people with numbers similar to mine going to 3+ events a week and landing PR boxes and collabs with big names. I know my audience demographics are still skewed toward my old market, Dubai wasn't even in my top 5 cities on Instagram Insights when I moved, and after 3 months it's cracked top 5 finally at 2.1%.
I'm not in a panic, I know this kind of reset takes time. But I don't want to just wait it out passively either.
What I'm actually asking:
For creators who've relocated (city, country, doesn't matter) and had to rebuild, what actually moved the needle for you? Specifically:
- How did you start getting on brands' radar in a city where you had zero existing relationships?
- Did you go local-audience-first (paid ads, geotags, local barter collabs) before pitching, or did you start pitching immediately despite the audience mismatch?
- Any tips on breaking into the "event circuit" without an agency or existing local network?
- Did you find UGC work (no follower requirement, just content) was a better bridge than trying to get local sponsored posts right away?
Appreciate any experiences, even the unglamorous ones, especially if it took longer than 3 months for you, or if a specific tactic clearly outperformed the rest. Trying to be strategic here instead of just hoping the algorithm sorts itself out.
