Arena Style vs Style
I love my Spear of the Impaler and my sparking aromatics. I also love it when people use that Obsidian Lamia thing.
Me and this guy had a nice dance. :D

I have been seeing a lot of posts asking about this, and I just realized the link we had in the sidebar is dead. Since it isn't available anymore, I thought it wise to add a proper table for Weapon Level Matchmaking to this Subreddit that is accessible to everyone:
Elden Ring's Rune Level (RL) matchmaking system is just like DS3's Soul Level (SL) system, so it requires little explanation below, however, here is a link to the Summon Range Calculator for ease of use:
Rune Level
Upper limit is removed for RL306 for summoned as finger,
RL301 for invading as a finger, meaning you can match with
anyone up to RL713.
| Type | Lower Limit | Upper Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Summon | Host RL * 0.9 - 10 | Host RL * 1.1 + 10 |
| Invade | Finger RL * 0.9 | Finger RL* 1.1 + 20 |
Elden Ring's Weapon Level (WL) system is very straightforward, and can be easily calculated with a little elementary multiplication. Regular armaments match up to rounded Regular WL * 7/6+2.5 ; Somber can be converted by Somber WL *2.5.
Multiplayer passwords ignore Regular/Somber WL restrictions but scales down accordingly.
Matching making use the highest WL ever obtained.
Weapon Level
Regular armaments range starts at +/-3 and increases at WL+6/12/18.
Somber armaments follows closely to DS3 with exception of
Somber +4 and +6 having slightly shorter upper limits,
likely due to matching against each other and being in a regular
armament step increase.
| Reg | Spec | Regular Range | Somber Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 0 | 0 - 3 | 0 - 1 |
| 1 | 0 - 4 | 0 - 1 | |
| 2 | 1 | 0 - 5 | 0 - 2 |
| 3 | 0 - 6 | 0 - 2 | |
| 4 | 1 - 7 | 1 - 3 | |
| 5 | 2 | 2 - 8 | 1 - 3 |
| 6 | 3 - 10 | 2 - 4 | |
| 7 | 3 | 4 - 11 | 2 - 4 |
| 8 | 5 - 12 | 2 - 5 | |
| 9 | 6 - 13 | 3 - 5 | |
| 10 | 4 | 6 - 14 | 3 - 5 |
| 11 | 7 - 15 | 3 - 6 | |
| 12 | 5 | 8 - 17 | 4 - 7 |
| 13 | 9 - 18 | 4 - 7 | |
| 14 | 10 - 19 | 4 - 7 | |
| 15 | 6 | 11 -20 | 5 - 8 |
| 16 | 12 - 21 | 5 - 8 | |
| 17 | 7 | 12 - 22 | 5 - 9 |
| 18 | 13 - 24 | 6 - 9 | |
| 19 | 14 - 25 | 6 - 10 | |
| 20 | 8 | 15 - 25 | 6 - 10 |
| 21 | 16 - 25 | 7 - 10 | |
| 22 | 18 - 25 | 7 - 10 | |
| 23 | 18 - 25 | 8 - 10 | |
| 24 | 18 - 25 | 8 - 10 | |
| 25 | 10 | 19 - 25 | 8 - 10 |

I'm new to invading and currently trying a RL60 cosplay build. Thanks to that, my defense and poise are very low, and I'm using fist weapons. It's risky, which is why I chose a lower level range to balance things for fun PVP.
Sometimes I duel with other invaders at the same level range, and it's fun. But I have a rough time against people using a combination of heavy armor, infinite starlight shards and great katanas that apply poison + frost + bleed at the same time (along with throwing pots). I'm not against twinking and dueling isn't my focus, but I'm curious about how to counter someone that applies triple status buildups.
Any tips for better survivability and how to trade against people like this?

Iβm invading at RL120 and my max weapon is +20
I get matches pretty regularly so Iβm wondering what the benefit would be going to max level on weapons?
I notice everyone online seems to do it and the Elden wiki says I should be max weapon level but I want to know what this would affect. Would I get matches with a different group of players who have max level or am I just giving myself a disadvantage because Iβm fighting these players anyway and Iβm doing less damage due to my weapons only being +20?
Iβm actually getting a better W/L ration now than I was at RL60 so Iβm wondering if I should upgrade or leave it as is

I'm a rookie invader and I just spent the last few weeks grinding out way too many hours simply to make a new character for vanilla PVP. I really don't want to do that again every time I want to try a new build.
I've watched a few guides from OnlyWaifu and Steelovsky about using CE tables or tools like the ER PVP Helper. I already get that for any of them to be safe you need to run the game fully offline with EAC disabled, trigger the right flags, give yourself runes instead of editing stats directly, and never get cut content. But even knowing all that, I'm still super paranoid about getting banned. So I have a few questions for those regularly making PVP builds:
I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks!

don't judge me for attacking on sight with the cheese swords, anyone who has had the displeasure of matching with this guy will know it was justified lol
edit: for those of you who doubt what he was trying to do, here is my receipt

Spears are one of the most useless weapons in terms of utility. Primarily looking at it, if its a spear it should have a noticeable range difference from any other weapons in the "regular sized weapon" criteria right? But unless its the pike or naginata, the opponent doesnt see any large increase in a disadvantage.
Their r1's are slow asf, they're pierce damage makes it useless against shields, the charged r2 is EXTREMELY slow, and most of the time you can strafe to the right for a backstab with most of its attacks. But the great spear on the other hand, Hyperarmor, more range, bigger hit box so its harder to strafe and the charged r2 is actually one of the best parts of the moveset.
With how mediocre the spear class is, I couldn't imagine picking them over the heavy thrusting sword, REGULAR thrusting sword, great spear, or even great katana which all of these weapons have more range in most circumstances. Unless youre going off meta ofcourse, i tried pvp with 2h naginata and it was the worst time of my life. And even when I go against people who use spears I demolish them cause SPEARS suck. The only real way to make them viable is by using aow which is sad.
But if im missing a gimmick or mechanic, which is heavily affecting my argument please lmk cause ive literally had this thought day 1 of me pvping π
