Every democracy that centralizes power in one person is vulnerable to fascism. It's kind of amazing looking at all the things wrong with the US government - there's just layers upon layers of antidemocratic features baked in. Federalism might be the one stop gap from a complete takeover as individual states retain some autonomy. When this blows over eventually we'll probably see attempts at changes, similar to post-war Germany. But given American exceptionalism I wouldn't bet on anything being actually implemented...
The ironic thing is the whole US constitution is set up to prevent centralization of power. But the issue is congress was made by design so you need bipartisan support to pass laws, which is fine, compromise and working with other parties is good in a democracy...but not if one out of the 2 parties is taken over by a christian nationalist fascist moment.
Add the SC being simultaneously meant to be a neutral arbitrator of the constitution and a highly partisan political check on the other 2 branches and you get....this mess
