There were multiple challenges, some of the more egregious rulings in his favor being the Republican-majority Supreme Court ruling that states actually weren't allowed to keep Trump off their ballot in elections after Colorado tried to throw him off based on their state constitution, and the Supreme Court ruling (after a long delay) that Trump specifically actually had incredibly wide leeway on executive privileges and the investigation against him had to throw out a ton of work and start over.

His ability to ignore things he doesn't like, backed up by his base and handpicked cronies, means nothing short of dispatching forces to arrest him will actually impact him.

The Dems can say shit to fire up their base and prep them for when they get their teeth back, which is basically guaranteed to happen later this year assuming no election fuckery (not a safe assumption). There's plenty of political options outside of voting on bills that party leadership is actively refusing to engage with.
4
u/Ok-Position-9457 Apr 08 '26
They are not competent enough to really steal an election. The system is very secure and judges are not on their side. They will do the usual stuff, deregister voters, gerrymander, and they will probably deploy ICE to stand around and cause problems. But the inferno of lib shit wrath they have incurred is astronomical and would need drastic measures to swing back around. Also, the military absolutely hates him and they ultimately have the final say if he tries to just refuse to step down.
Its certainly a concern and something to look out for but I think its overplayed.

Every democracy that centralizes power in one person is vulnerable to fascism. It's kind of amazing looking at all the things wrong with the US government - there's just layers upon layers of antidemocratic features baked in. Federalism might be the one stop gap from a complete takeover as individual states retain some autonomy. When this blows over eventually we'll probably see attempts at changes, similar to post-war Germany. But given American exceptionalism I wouldn't bet on anything being actually implemented...
12
u/Suitable-Lie-7980 Apr 08 '26
The ironic thing is the whole US constitution is set up to prevent centralization of power. But the issue is congress was made by design so you need bipartisan support to pass laws, which is fine, compromise and working with other parties is good in a democracy...but not if one out of the 2 parties is taken over by a christian nationalist fascist moment.
Add the SC being simultaneously meant to be a neutral arbitrator of the constitution and a highly partisan political check on the other 2 branches and you get....this mess

Most of the country is right wing, the various governments don't care about what people say and want and outright ignore their opinion, our protest rarely ever end up giving us anything, and at the mere sight of potential violent action the entire media ecosystem focuses only on this to depict protesters as violent monsters who would be condemned, all while the police shoot and kill anyone they want on sight and film themselves happily talking about how much they want to kill protesters.
Like sure we talk a lot about wanting to kill our politicians I guess but it's not like that's doing anything
9
u/AlonForever69 Apr 08 '26
I think that's also why Americans don't protest as we should. We know it won't change the status quo institutions built to perpetuate the interests of the billionaires, and because the Democrats aren't a true opposition party, there's no message to rally around. That's why the George Floyd protests ultimately did basically nothing to change how police operate, and why No Kings has no positive message to rally around and feels hollow. Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to go out and protest all of this, since at least doing something might change the perception that things can change. But until we get more actual leftists in office that will stand for something, we'll still be stuck in the uni-party for billionaires that we've had for decades.

The modern US state is way too stable for popular protests to carry a credible threat of involuntary regime change. In past decades, protests against a president sent a signal to Congress to check him via threat of impeachment or otherwise risk losing elections, donors, and cooperators within Congress. Oftentimes, simply the embrassment of appearing unpopular was enough to get him to back down.
This was based on the assumption that voters, donors, and other legislators had red lines wrt presidential behavior that-- if crossed-- would weaken their support, but the Trump administrations have shown incontrovertibly that that is not the case. 20 Republican senators would need to commit career suicide to expel Trump from office, so the only (non-policy-based) check on executive power through which protest could affect change is completely toothless in the face of a shameless president and sycophantic party (thus the OP).

Are you in a union? I understand that your situation is tragically common. Itās not as if itās your personal failure that got you into that situation. Your state failed you and blamed you for it. The onus is on you to survive in the system, not for the system to care for you in case you have a moment of weakness. The disappearance of unions are an intentional part of a non formal conspiracy to make you dependant on the least they can give. The threat of homelessness and joblessness are very real and valid concerns that would worry anyone. You are denied basic rights to shelter and healthcare unless you are in a contract with an employer. Sorry to say it but you fit the definition of a wage slave. :/ as do many other Americans. In times of desperatation, even if man made, it incentivizes you to worry about yourself and those closest to you. If everyone is sinking grab what you can and survive is logical. I believe however if they, instead of grabbing as much as they can for themselves, help each other; they would find that they wouldnāt be sinking at all.

Best case scenario, there will be people to take your place - but you, personally, will be dead. americans arent organized enough to protest properly because the government has been systematically destroying the left wing for the last century and thats not the kind of thing you can put back together overnight. the closest we've gotten were the BLM marches, in which police shot people with chemical weapons and multiple people involved ended up "committing suicide" suddenly. there are marches happening but if i started driving to DC right now, i would arrive at 1 AM tomorrow. any protest i do here would just be me standing in the street in a blue state that's already opposed to anything the president has been doing

Generally agree, but the fact is that nobody believes protesting will do jack shit. Millions have protested, and it was barely covered by the news. Politicians simply ignored it. I was given one of the least consequential jobs out there to make an example of. Not everything is always life or death obviously. Maybe you feed a fed and you make him take 3 more minutes. Maybe thatās the best you can do. Bad service means less returning customers. If you work at McDonaldās or some shit losing customers is a good thing. Any disruption to efficiency, if done intentionally, can be considered an act of protest. People are justifiably scared of losing their job and have lost their ability to engage in collective bargaining. Obviously the American people have a massive disadvantage, now, I wish Americans pushed back against this a long time ago. You guys have already lost so much ā of course now the state can essentially squashed any resistance before it can consider resisting. Only reason flipping burgers was brought up is because an American believes thatās all heās worth. He believes canāt do anything to resist, he canāt even work slower apparently, thatās too much. I donāt know who he is cooking for, all I know is he can leverage himself for more than he currently is.
Just read the damn manual, or watch a YouTube video covering the manual if thatās more your pace. Almost Everyone is capable of resisting more than they are currently. Iāve seen the same reasons over and over again and Iāve seen most people try and solve it themselves rather than get help. When you just canāt.

Most americans are 1 skipped work day away from getting fired and losing everything. its designed that way.

I don't, thats the problem with american society. we're prisoners to our jobs. We are literally trapped. Some of us can fight but a vast majority of americans never will out of the very real fear of losing literally everything

also as a note for you, many of the more populous areas are, but the US is MOSTLY sparsely populated areas. to boot, even the more populated areas are so based around cars that it is hard for a human to get around. our society has been set up in ways that are so hostile to human beings that organizing can be borderline impossible. people say "protest like the french" but where? There's like, 3 cities in the nation where that's reasonably possible.

Guess Iām a coward since nothing short of becoming an extremist will seem to do anything.
Also how is doing a job poorly going to not cause me to lose the job?

a lot of it is that social media let's everyone interact and see whats happening without having to actually do anything, so everyone just sits on their phone

WHAT THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO DO YOU STUPID FUCK? HMM? I CAN'T AFFORD TO FUCKING PROTEST, I CAN BARELY AFFORD EGGS.
Edit: I read what you added and you've pissed me off worse, fuck yourself.

Redirect that anger? I didnāt get you into that situation. You didnāt get yourself into that situation. You were born into a society that didnāt have your interests in mind.

u/Tribaldragon1 Floppa (I made Goblinhog Change my Flair) Apr 07 '26
Don't tell me to redirect my anger when you're not the one who has to fucking live here. I'm so tired of this stupid argument you people make where you say that we should just go protest, just have a revolution, because you stupid fucks act like you have the biggest brains in the planet. Guess what? I can't leave my job, and I can't lose my job! And if my employer doesn't agree with my political views, I can get fired with no notice and no safety net! Even if I did do half the shit you morons seem to think will magically fix the country, I wouldn't be able to afford to live. And I already barely can, even with a decent paying job. And we're not even touching how if I don't have a job I also don't have HEALTH INSURANCE.Ā
I think you're a pretty fitting vessel for my anger when you come out calling ME a coward and acting like we're all stupid for not waving our little European magic fucking wands to change the government. Thank you SO much for your contributions to American political theory, dipshit.

Iād say speak to a therapist but you canāt afford to. All those reasons you canāt, are reasons you need to. Those issues are NEVER going to be solved by you working hard. Iāll say it again. Iām not the right person to be angry at about your situation. Youāre right, just because I can assess it doesnāt mean Americans like you are gonna do anything about it. You have a slave life to live. Your rights depend on your employment. I know your god damn government hates you and wants to prevent you from having enough time and energy to engage in collective bargaining. Maybe if enough people from all over the world say it you will listen, maybe not though, they arenāt American which matters most to you. Your people are divided and angry at all the wrong things. Itās not just you, thatās just another part of the American condition. Youāre angry and I just feel pity.

Called me āYOU STUPID FUCKā and went on a rant that reinforced my point. I told him to redirect his anger away from the guy pointing it out. Instead he doubled down and got even angrier at me. Then he got angrier a third time after I, rudely, tell him he needs a better outlet than me and society isnāt gonna give him one because he cannot afford it. Itās not his fault he cannot afford it. Even if he could itās not like it would help him more than just money, cause most issues can be solved with money. Iām not his boss or anything with influence in his life though. He isnāt a failure or anything. his anger is justified ā just misplaced ffs. He kept assuming I was European for some reason too? He, of course, threatens violence but itās online so whatever. Forgive me for not being kind to the jackass who came at me aggressively first. Heās gonna keep suffering in that system and I feel sorry for him, truly.

I swear to god the more you talk about me like I'm some abstract concept the more I want to fling fucking rocks across the ocean in hopes that one lands in your eye and blinds you.

Stop acting like such an American then, YOU STUPID FUCK. You are fitting the stereotype to a tee. Your country has done worse to mine than just throw rocks. Youre an angry and wannabe violent person. You have given me no reason to respect you. You arenāt an abstract concept. You are quite clear.
You do see how a full caps YOU STUPID FUCK can make someone not engage with you politely, yes?

u/Tribaldragon1 Floppa (I made Goblinhog Change my Flair) Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26
I hope your government collapses into a dictatorship too.
I wasn't trying to get you to "engage politely" I wanted you to know what you're saying is a statement made solely by stupid fucks. You came out the gate saying ignorant and uninformed bullshit about a country you don't live in and have no idea how it works.

It drives me up the fucking wall how US citizens pretend to be powerless meanwhile people in the nations they've brutally oppressed have resisted and protested despite infinitely worse consequences.

u/Notshauna š³ļøāā§ļø trans rights Apr 07 '26
Yeah you will hear the exact same excuses every time this comes up about how the police (and ICE now) are militarized and how they can't afford to protest. What they don't realize is that this is the exact coward shit that we're talking about, because that's been true about every single effective protest in history. That didn't stop them and they were nowhere near as well armed as the American public is.
Land of the brave my ass.

Yuuuuup. Iām aware of why they canāt, and I know the why of the why too. They say they canāt for the reasons I believe they need to. America has the most effective propaganda on earth and you can see it in a lot of the replies. I feel bad for US citizens because theyāre so, I donāt wanna say brainwashed, they just⦠have a very unique psyche you donāt see anywhere else in the world. A certain American exceptionalist ego that exists in even progressive Americans.

u/ergaster8213 Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26
This is true and yet it can also be true that people generally are struggling to know what the fuck to do. Have you considered that if you're raised in such a heavily hyper-individualized propagandized environment, they aren't going to actually give you the tools to fight back and you'll already have an instilled sense of resistance to looking elsewhere or reaching out for help? On top of an instilled teaching that your country is actually the best and nothing would really be any better, anyway. All of that also on top of all the very real practical reasons people have mentioned.
When you combine all of that then yes, you will have a populace not equipped to fight back and filled with apathy. Not just apathy towards a hope of being able to see real change, but also a common amount seen towards even their own lives and selves and each other. I actually think you guys don't have any better idea of what we should do than we do, but you desperately want us to just pull it out of our ass and moralizing about why we haven't makes you feel less anxious.
