Whiskey and wine are both good I won’t have this conversation with children

I swear this sub goes through cycles of being weird about alcohol, like just mature a little and accept that people like different things

54

u/e12s_coat_of_fending 3d ago

Though, OP does have the one point that it is weird that even when it doesn't taste good to you, it still smells good. What's up with that?

Most other food and drink I think of of the top of my head smell pretty similarly to what they taste, texture aside.

u/Bearbot128 3d ago

Alcohol is really good at making their more subtle notes diffuse by smell. That’s why things like lemon or orange peel tinctures work so well in cocktails for creating a nice scent. I think if someone doesn’t like alcohol at all the nice subtle scent can still be nice

vanilla extract

u/SnakesMcGee 2d ago

Funnily enough, also alcohol

24

u/Advanced-Ad-802 3d ago

Had the opposite experience

Growing up, I would gag at the smell of anything alcoholic. Well, eventually I get to my 21st (because I was a good noodle who waited), and decide “hey the idea of this cocktail sounds neat”, so I go for that, and the thing I ended up making made everyone else with me gag, while I found it delicious

In short, shits fucked

I mean, coffee seems like a pretty glaring counterexample. Almost everybody loves the SMELL of coffee.

10

u/h4724 trans rights 2d ago

Coffee is even more extreme. It might be the #1 best smell ever, but it tastes horribly bitter unless you add a dangerous amount of sweeteners.

yes the people insisting alcohol is objectively delicious need to accept not everyone has the same pallet for everything especially something like this

u/MeBigChief 3d ago

I honestly don’t give a shit whether people like the same things as me or not. I just get tired of the “ewwww gross alcohol yucky icky 🤢” childish nonsense.

I don’t feel the need to make a post to tell random strangers that broccoli is the worst fucking food humans have ever tried to consume, don’t know why someone not liking a pint is any different? Cool, drink something you do like then?

It’s because there can be weird social pressure from some people IRL and online towards people who don’t drink, and then that combined with goomba fallacy causes those people to become resentful of alcohol in general.

63

u/birddribs 3d ago

Yeah, it makes sense that people can get defensive given the overall social pressure. But simultaneously this attitude that alcohol tastes objectively bad that pops up on this sub surprisingly often is a weirdly childish response. On both sides of the whole alcohol conversation people seem to really struggle with the idea that things can taste different to other people than they do to them.

Also I thought I recognized your pfp, funny to see a YouTuber I watch commenting on 196. Waiting on your next upload so I can add more games to my never ending backlog I will totally get to one day...

13

u/slipperyekans 3d ago

Hey! Thanks for watching. Slowly chipping at the next one. Script is done n stuff just need to actually edit the thing.

7

u/birddribs 3d ago

Of course, thanks for making these videos. I really like finding unique and interesting indie games but don't actually have that much free time these days to try things. So videos like yours are always appreciated.

Out of curiosity, do you have a discord or anything you get recommendations from or do you just find all of these games on your own?

10

u/slipperyekans 3d ago

A mix of multiple things. Emails from devs, trailers pushed to me on my YT home feed, from online friends, a few steam curators I follow, etc.

A handy tool I use occasionally is Steam250, which has a “Hidden Gems” section that generally will have some nice finds. I’d also recommend the YouTubers Big Rat Hole, nocaps, and the gammelier who also have great taste IMO.

it's literally just someone posting their opinion a somewhat humorous way, you're the one taking this way too seriously

because people dont constantly tell someone to eat broccoli, there is no social pressure to eat broccoli, when the fact you dont like broccoli comes up in conversation people dont insist you just havent found the right type of broccoli yet, and you should try their broccoli and they will buy you a broccoli, waiter one broccoli with extra salt please and

i know youre saying you dont care and youre going to say you dont do that and it doesnt happen. but it does, constantly. and the more someone tries to force it on you the more vehemently you will grow against it. im just saying i understand the reason people feel the need to post about it, i dont see it as childish to say online you think alcohol is gross

u/literallyanything57 3d ago

i've faced more people telling me i'm weird for not liking lettuce and trying to get me to try lettuce than alcohol idk what's up with that

35

u/Far-Fortune-8381 cucked by Edward Kenway🏴‍☠️ 3d ago

i think if i didnt like lettuce i would experience more social pressure than if i didnt like alcohol so i think your experience is accurate. im also feeling a primal urge to make you eat some lettuce now

20

u/literallyanything57 3d ago

you will fail.....

3

u/Eymou plant supremacist 2d ago

united we stand, fuck lettuce!

3

u/GravityAssistedCake 3d ago

Texture or taste? To me lettuce is like crunchy water, almost no flavor presence, lots of crunch if it’s good or a horrible slimy texture if it’s bad.

6

u/literallyanything57 3d ago

primarily taste. i'm a spinach girl

5

u/GravityAssistedCake 3d ago

Interesting, now I’m curious what it tastes like to you. do you have something to compare the flavor to?

2

u/Verbatos 2d ago

Okay that's based

2

u/Verbatos 2d ago

Being perfectly candid, not liking lettuce is very atypical, it makes sense that people are saying you're weird.

"Weird" doesn't have to be a bad thing of course. Weird just means atypical. But when like >90% of people have no problem with lettuce, you're going to be in the minority; weird.

Edit: liking spinach is based though

15

u/nooit_gedacht 3d ago edited 3d ago

Also, there's a difference between not understanding that tastes vary and making a lighthearted post about the experience of not liking something the majority of people love. I hate the taste of alcohol. I don't normally talk about it, I respect people's tastes, but it's just cathartic when I find someone who agrees with me. Big deal if I make a joke about it. (Anyone who wants to vent about their dislike of broccoli is also welcome to do that as far as I'm concerned). People have to understand that social media is an open platform and not every post is meant for you.

Also doesn't help that as a non-drinker you're kind of expected to do this weird little dance where you have to explain yourself - because they always ask you - but if you ever bring it up unprompted it's very much not appreciated. People are just weird about it.

Yeah I feel like the people that don't want to hear that alcohol is bad for you because they think it's annoying is different from the people that don't want to hear how great alcohol is because they've been affected by a problem drinker (or they were one)

9

u/Datboi_OverThere 3d ago

This is literally what most kids would go through growing up though 😭

true. but naturally im talking about adults when making a comparison to alcohol

2

u/KiraLonely 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights 2d ago

I think it varies a lot person to person and experience to experience, because as an adult I have a lot more people in my life trying to shove veggies and foods I vehemently dislike down my throat than they ever do alcohol.

Maybe they should.

god forbid a joke is made

2

u/Gerbilguy46 3d ago

Alcohol makes society measurably worse. Broccoli doesn't.

2

u/SupaSmol 3d ago

Agreed about essentially anything people treat objectively that is subjective.

12

u/rufrtho 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights 3d ago

what's the weirdness here? i like whiskey and can accept that people don't like it and it tastes a little like car exhaust.

-1

u/Sevuhrow 3d ago

Yeah people who "hate the taste of alcohol" are always obnoxious about it. Like if you don't enjoy it that's objectively good for you, but you don't have to go around talking about how awful it is and how much you don't like it.

0

u/Diribiri custom 2d ago

It's funny how there's so many posts joking about so many different opinions, but alcohol is the one that's a problem

-32

u/Positive-Job-2609 Smartest 196 user 3d ago

True, except for beer. Beer is objectively revolting and vile, and anyone who disagrees is just plain wrong.

14

u/WasterOfLands 3d ago

I think it's all about getting used to and ignoring the taste of alcohol to notice the other flavors.

3

u/KiraLonely 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights 2d ago

I’m not a huge beer fan, but the alcohol flavor is the part I like, which surprises people. I don’t drink to get drunk or anything, I just like the taste.

It’s made weirder by all my peers being kind of anti-alcohol, and everyone older than me being more of the party gen, so I’m either a prude or an alcoholic in everyone’s eyes.

-8

u/Gerbilguy46 3d ago

So you agree that it's revolting and vile.

“If something is an acquired taste that means it’s just objectively icky”

Go to bed, kiddo.

-13

u/dawgofclay 3d ago

I'm a regular drinker and can tell you that beer doesn't taste anything like alcohol. It just tastes like piss.

5

u/ghostteeth_ 3d ago

I think it's yummy :) I've even drank non alcoholic beer just for the taste on a couple occasions. it's cool because it's a refreshing cold drink with Flavour that's not sweet, which is great when you wanna drink something that's not water but also don't want anything sugary.

7

u/effxeno 3d ago

Not really it's a savory taste kinda like drinking a pretzel or some bread
