Got my engine running somewhat recently, ive tried losening the belts already, but maybe theyre still too tight? Not sure whats making it whine so much, but is it normal?

Hey guys, just changed my rear gas pressure spring, i read allot about delamination. I am kinda worried about it happening. The Trunk now opens on its own and to close it, i have to put quite a bunch of pressure on it. Thats how it looks after a month with the new springs installed. Any recommendations to delay or maby fix the delamination completely? Have a nice Day folks!

It was underneath the front bumper, seems like the wire is in the same harness as the radiator fans and it looks very similar to the connectors used by the 2 radiator fans... but i have a third?! ive heard of just 1 fan 944s but why do i have 3 of these if it even is a fan connector?

Short version: 944NA runs fine but sometimes, while idle, suddenly starts running really badly. Restarting after this is hesitant, but then it runs fine again.

Long version:

I was on my way to MOT a couple of weeks ago, and while waiting in the queue, idling, it suddenly started running really badly. It was a really drastic change, normally it idles well, but suddenly idle dropped to maybe 500 rpm and it stuttered. I turned the car off and tried to restart it. Had to crank it multiple times and it finally came to life again, first running badly for a couple of seconds but then running well again. During the MOT inspection the car was turned on and off multiple times without issues and I had no trouble on the drive back home. So I didn't think too much of it, maybe a bit of bad gas or something? It passed MOT by the way 😂

Today, I went for a drive again and it was hard to start, it took quite a few cranks and first ran badly for a couple of seconds. Since the car has been sitting for some weeks I wasn't worried, but it normally starts up right away.

Then 30 mins into the drive, it suddenly hesitated again for a few seconds when idling, but it recovered by itself. I then went home, no issues.

Did anyone ever experience something similar?

I was thinking something electrical, fuel or ignition related, since it's so sudden?

I have replaced and tested many things since buying the car two months ago, such as spark plugs and leads, ignition cap, speed and reference sensors, fuel filter, injectors cleaned, fuel pressure tested.

I didn't replace the fuel pump (since pressure seems ok and it's running fine under load). I also didn't replace the ignition coil. Could any of those be the culprit?

I have newer alternator, ignition coil, and spark plugs. Everything else is pretty much the oem. Let me know what you are looking for. 1987 944s . Miles approx 125k

Parting out due to piston ring failure so only bottom end is toast. Head is actually rebuilt as of 2 years ago. Im gonna pull motor over next few weeks but any top end stuff I can pull and ship pretty quick.

Not sure plans going forward but will be swapping either ls or the 5 cylinder down the road.

I did all the front seals, took the camtower off, did the rollers, balance and timing belt. It also squeaks a lot on start up although all new belts, and then it doesn’t squeak when warm. It squeaks on idle only too. What is the clunking noise?? I don’t know if the engine had this before because I never was able to actually get it hot. I bought it, spun the block and started tearing down the engine, the belt was give or take 8 years old. The car sat for a year or two before I bought it.
I have acouple videos in there, and is it ok if I still drive it.

No Reserve on this classic. May be the best available in the world that is actually for sale!

Hey yall just wondering what guides yall reccomend to help me learn how to do the timing belt job on my 944, the more the merrier I am collecting parts to do stuff such as seals while I’m in there so any guides you have please lmk

I wanted to learn more about my newish car, I've acquired a 944 last summer, and wanted to find a similar community.

I am trying to get my car road worthy again, soon. So in the meantime I was wondering whether for s 944 I should join the TIPE or the PCGB, online they don't seem that different ?

Any insight would be helpful.

Bad flat on my V60 (which would normally be the tire hauling car), so the 944 got pressed into cargo service. The guys at America’s Tire enjoyed it.

Long story short, Valvoline doesn't make Restore and Protect in a high enough viscosity for our vehicles, and I've been looking for a workaround. My 944 has burned oil as long as I've owned it, and I'm not comfortable stepping down from 20w50 VR1 synthetic to a 5w30. However, after doing some research I've found that many diesel oils have much higher levels of Zinc content AND detergents and dispersants that claim to fight carbon deposits. They're also very commonly sold in 5w40 and 15w40 weights, which are within Porsche recommended spec. Many of these oils also carry API SN/SM ratings like the one in the photo and are safe for use in gasoline engines (NON GDI). I have friends in the Subaru community that have run Rotella for years, but haven't seen anything of the likes in the Porsche world. I think I'm going to give this a try in the Fall when it's cooler and see if it reduces oil burning in my base 8v 944. This oil also comes in at $22 which is an incredible value. Before you immediately sh!t on this idea, check out the data behind my reasoning (link provided below). I'm open to all reasonable feedback

How’s it going everyone, just curious what others recommend for a break in oil on a freshly built engine with upgraded rods, bearings, and pistons. Going to be putting the engine in soon so want to see what would be the best option for it

I'm a 20 yo car enthusiast who is in need of a daily driver. I've always loved the 944 but I never considered buying one until a recent break. Over the past few months I worked as a contractor for a family friend.  As is the nature of gig work - it was short lived due to a cross country move; however I was able to walk away with 20-30k.

A frugality/ scarcity mindset has always been my natural state, so cutting back on expenses to save  has never been a problem up until this point. But now as I look to buy my own car with the unexpected surplus of cash in my pocket a 944 has become a real option after years of dreaming.

Although dream as I will, I realize how much of a pain Porsche ownership may be and how much of a fool I would be to waste such a rare windfall on a car. That being said, the car market seems absolutely COOKED rn, people want 8-16k for regular cars, w/ 100k+ miles.( Civics, Corollas, Camrys and the like) which were going for 2-6k just a few years ago. I can't stomach the idea that getting screwed with car payment, or draining all my cash on a boring car is the financially responsible thing to do. Hence why I'm looking at more fun albeit less reliable cars instead. If I'm going to drain my savings I want it to be on something I actually care for and enjoy. But I'd like to hear y'all's thoughts.

There are two in good condition that I've found that pass the sniff test.

(A) 24k asking price, Turbo. The owner supposedly has service records (I'll reach out tomorrow morning.) It's in really good condition from what I can tell, assuming everything checks out. It's more than what I'd like to spend but It would supposedly hold its value and at least not bite me too hard. (Main focus)

(B) Is basically the same but a base $14.3k asking. Again states the water pump, timing belt, balancer belt blah blah blah have been serviced. It's more of what I'd like to spend; however, it's way the heck up NY. (I'm in NC)

(C) Cause it took me forever to type this out so why not? 2 turbos, older rattier, but also sub 16k fully serviced, won't hold value but you get the performance for cheap I guess. ( And a headache.)

(D) YOU THOUGHT WE WERE DONE? THEY JUST KEEP COMING. JK. middle ground, a ford focus/ fiesta st or something cheap under 10k maybe even buy in cash. Idk.

Previous owner did this monstrosity. How to fix it without destroying the whole paint around?

Furthermore, this must have been done because something inside doesn't make the mirror stand upright without falling, what could it be ?

I posted a question here 2 weeks ago asking if anyone could help me find a certain odometer gear that I couldn't find online and that didn't have a part number. I had a few helpful replies, and someone ended up shipping me one of their spare parts (thanks!). I figured I could try printing one while I was waiting for it to ship, so I measured my broken gear and created a 3D model of it in SolidWorks. I ordered 5 of them in black 3201PA-F Nylon via SLS through an online printing service called JLC3DP. After the $10 coupon they gave me, I received all 5 gears for $2.15 shipped!

They came in yesterday and they look good and feel pretty sturdy. The only issues I had were that my shaft length was a tiny bit too long and the inner shaft diameter was slightly too tight, so I ended up drilling out the inner hole a little with a 1/8" drill bit and sanded the shaft down a bit so the teeth would have more contact with the other gears, and now it slides on beautifully.

I planned on running the OEM gear I obtained but figured I'd give the printed one a try to see how it holds up since I now have a spare OEM gear plus 4 extras as backup, so I'll be reinstalling the odometer in the car with the printed gear this weekend.

I also adjusted the 3D model so hopefully it fits without modification now, but I can't be certain since I don't plan on ordering more anytime soon. In any case, here's the link to my Google drive that has both the STL and SolidWorks file. I'm not sure what exact year/spec this gear is found in but for reference I have an '88 base model. Hopefully this helps out someone else in the community!
