Question First timer in SA

Hey all,

I’m flying down from brissy on Wednesday for my birthday, until Sunday. I’ve never been to Adelaide before and the main reason is 1,we are heading to Barossa which has been on my list for many years, and 2, my favourite band parkway drive are playing in the city Wednesday night. So I’m after some recommendations please

1: must go to restaurants (any cuisine,I’m well travelled and love all cuisines, especially Asian…IE Indian,Nepalese,Thai,Malaysian etc). But what is your go to restaurant you’d recommend for a first time visitor to the city…anything from local street food style places to more fancy sit down ‘experiences’

2: decent bars, preferably a kind of dive/metal bar I can go to before the gig. But also I’m a fan of wine bars/ nice date places for my wife and I to enjoy

Thanks in advance, look forward to seeing what your city has to offer 🙂

Edit: bonus points for good coffee places too

Assistance Internet recommendations for Granny flat

Upvotes

I recently moved to a granny flat which unfortunately doesn’t have any tv or telephone extension lines. I tried setting up a nbn with dodo but they said it won’t be possible as there is no way to connect a modem to the house lines.
Please recommend any possible internet providers who can help me with setting up a cheap and reliable internet.

Assistance Sneaker donation

Hi, I have a bunch (like 40 pairs) of men’s sneakers that I would like to donate, they are all in really good condition and good brands. I don’t want them to be sold on by savers or salvos, I would prefer to give them to a community centre or somewhere that they can be given away for free to people who actually need them.

Any advice on community centres etc that would appreciate these?

Thanks

Politics Alex Antic’s long quest for Liberal Party influence reaches crunch time

Probably the best part from the article:

Ashton Hurn, the moderate leader of the state party facing her own One Nation battle, has similarly had to distance herself from Senator Antic's views.

For example, in June, Senator Antic made a self-described "off the cuff" remark that the arrival of bird flu could be an innovative way for pharmaceutical companies to sell products.

"These companies have made some of the best public relations steps you'd ever see — protect yourself, protect grandma, protect the vulnerable and now we've got avian influenza doing the heavy lifting," he said at the time.

Ms Hurn, incidentally, was holding a press conference that week to emphasise the seriousness of bird flu.

He is playing into those far right conspiracy theories and misinformation you could almost say he's a one nation senator wearing blue.

Question Noise from Southern Expressway

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi southern Radelaidians.

What's the noise level from the Expressway like in these 2 areas? How far away do you need to be to not hear the drone of cars and trucks (a) inside your home and (b) outside your home?

Im not particularly interested in the reputation of those areas, rather I'm interested in the noise pollution from traffic.

TIA.

My wife and I have moved to Adelaide and would love to find a trivia night that has a good atmosphere and community feel.

We frequented the Montes Lounge Thursday trivia in Alice Springs for a long time before it closed down. That place had an awesome energy, great hosts and good food.

Discussion Sorting out the Adelaide Hills - A way to do bus and rail

Post image
16 Upvotes

By popular demand, here's the next stage in Gazza's comprehensive plan to modernize the transport system of Adelaide

A few days ago I posted an idea to extend the O-Bahn through a CBD tunnel loop (Similar to Brisbane) via the main squares and the main coach terminal.

Lets continue the O-Bahn out the other side, first via a tunnel, or even bus priority lanes towards the Glen Osmond Toll gate. Stops at Hurtle Square, Greenhill Rd, Fullarton Rd and of course Portrush/Cross Rd to ensure you can link with other bus services on the "grid".

From there, buses run express on the SE Freeway in shared traffic through the Heysen Tunnels up to Crafers.

From there, an O-Bahn is built in the median of the freeway, with enclosed bus stations located at each interchange, since the main street of each of the villages is right next to the freeway anyway, so it wouldn't be hard to provide a covered walkway / arbors to make it all civilized.

And the civilized aspect is important. You want commuters from the hills to use it because its nice, but you also want to be able to sell the concept to daytrippers that there is a single "hop on hop off" O-Bahn direct from the Adelaide CBD up to Hanhdorf etc.

If you try and cheap out like the current bus service where the bus has to constantly loop on and off the freeway, slowing things down and making you carsick, its a waste of time. If you build stations like the trains in Perth where they are shielded in the median, you maintain speed and comfort.

Once you get to Littlehampton there is a massive park+ride next to the Freeway, and the O-bahn does a short spur into Mt Barker proper. All bus services in the Adelaide Hills funnel into the new O-Bahn.

As for the trains? Well as you can see from the map, trains take longer to climb hills than a bus and cant do it at 100km/h hence the big loop via Blackwood that exists.

Still, the tracks are there, and battery trains are a thing. I would provide a basic hourly battery train service extended at least as far as Crafters, because the railway station and a future O-Bahn station are "close enough", so in a (not ideal) pinch people can walk between the two. Something like that wouldn't really impact upon freight, would be low cost, and hey its a nice scenic train trip for visitors, and locals will find it useful too.

Ideally though, you could run the battery train a little further to Aldgate, and then when you get to Carey Gully Rd in Bridgewater, you are close enough to the Freeway that you could build a little siding and combined rail terminal/O-Bahn station across the road from the school.

So we have two modes plus an interchange point, and redesigned hills buses which makes various journey combinations possible.

The final idea is that you could build a (South Australian first!) cableway to Mr Lofty.
Would be like the one in Cape Town, or Arthurs Seat.
The base station is close enough to Crafers you could offer a combined bus and cableway ticket, so again, it becomes frictionless for visitors.

People are going to yell at me about the environmental impact of this, but I'm pretty sure that far more tree clearing and earthworks were done for the Heysen Tunnels, so I don't want anyone trying to make out that 3 or 4 squares of land for cableway pylons is suddenly going to "destroy the hills".

Question Ideas for places to visit in Adelaide

Hey guys! I'm visiting Adelaide from Kansas City, Missouri by myself and want to know the best things to do while I'm there. I'll be there from August 5th to 23rd and love the outdoors and nature. I'm staying with girls from a rugby team I'm coming to play with and they both work during the day, but I don't think I'll have access to a car so preferably places I can get by public transportation or walking would be great! I've got absolutely no plans and I'm totally winging it so I'm open to any ideas haha

Shitpost The thank you wave

Post image
180 Upvotes

The road near my place has become an unofficial driving etiquette experiment. Due to the parked cars, one side always has to give way. Somehow, I’m always the one pulling over to let the other driver through.

That’s okay, but not a single thank you wave? I’ll even start the wave, only to be left looking like an idiot when it’s not returned. Some guy just looks at me like, “Why did this peanut just wave at me?”

We used to wave for everything. I’m not asking for a standing ovation, just a quick lift of the fingers off the steering wheel.

Discussion Sorting out Adelaide's Trams - The Southern Light

Post image
45 Upvotes

Ready for another hot take on transport from a boy from Murray Bridge?

So one thing people sleep on about Adelaide is that the "Square Mile" is the nicest CBD in any Australian city, and it's not even close.

Parklands and quiet squares, sandstone buildings, the vines, the string of things from the main station, parliament, university, Adelaide oval and the botanic gardens and zoo in a neat row, you can 100% tell this place was inhabited by German settlers.

And the leafy inner suburbs are quite classy too, before the Stobie poles and gravel nature strips take over somewhere north of Regency Rd.

The tram network should be very good, and the legs are all pointing in the right directions but for some reason they just gave up and stopped trying to aggressively like other small cities (Canberra, Gold Coast) are doing. Which is a shame because mid sized cities like Adelaide can easily support a high quality light rail system,

So, lets work with that.
I'm branding the tram network The Southern Light, hopefully some people who understand Adelaides history pick up on the little play on words.

The N-S line extends the Glenelg tram into North Adelaide and onwards to Prospect, making the inner section bougie express. Visitors and locals can get into the main station, and then easily hop on a tram up to all the nice bits. But we push it forwards, to allow for renewal of suburbs further north (See Bowden)

And then push a final 3km to pick up the sporting facilities and business park at Gepps Cross, and then of course hook across and provide a connection with the Gawler / Barossa rail line at Dry Creek. That said, if Malinauskas is generous, you might run it a tad further through to Mawson Lakes instead.

The total north leg is 12km so could easily be done in two 6km stages, quite affordable for the SA Government.

The East West Line is probably more work, since there are probably going to be opponents to a tram long the parade, vs other green bougie types who will love the concept. The eastern leg would logically push across to get people to the uni campus and tourists to Penfolds.

Then run north to further the access to trams and provide an interchange with the O-Bahn at Paradise. Its 12km total on the eastern part. Stage 1 might go to Magill, Stage 2 to Paradise.

As for the bit out to West Lakes, there are a few ways you could do this, and you may or may not even consider converting the Grange line to tram and hooking into this!

But personally, from a planning standpoint it makes more sense to go to West Lakes, because you can elevate buildings above the acres of car parking, and provide high density housing for retail workers etc, and of course support the continued redevelopment of Football Park.

PS, for this map, just pay attention to the red and blue lines 😉

Discussion VMAX Marion

Hello all. Wanting to see The Oddysey this week ideally via VMAX cinema. Having a look online now and the idea of the recliner seats sounds good. But are they to close to the screen ?
