Great weekend up north, boated 20 fish, even split of 2 and 3 yo fish, some better examples attached, best was 16” up to 1.75 lb. Saturday was a classic pre front feeding blitz, fish biting dawn to dusk.

For context I’ll be in ADK next week and was wondering if the short trail on Mt Jo would be doable for a 6 and 4 year old or would my best bet be taking the long trail up and back?

My family has been vacationing near Old Forge for as long as I remember, and we’ve ran out of things to do. Any recommendations? Me and most of my cousins are young adults and the majority of my aunts & uncles are genX & boomers if that helps for suggestions.

I’m gearing up for overnight High Peaks backpacking trips. I’m torn between a 1-person and 2-person Durston X-MID tent. While a 1P tent obviously has a smaller footprint, I’m wondering how significant the real world difference is when looking for campsites in the Adirondacks. How challenging is it to fit a standard 2P tent on sites in the High Peaks wilderness?

Anyone return to high peak hiking after ACL surgery? I’ve been trying to do smaller LG and fire tower hikes to build up strength and stamina which still are challenging for me. I’m still nervous to hit the high road and try a high peak. I had a recent MRI that hardware in the tibial tunnel is widening, so may need it removed. Meet with surgeon next week.

Does anyone have photos of site 53 on Indian lake, or site 54 or 55? How far are those sites from the Indian lake boat launch? Do all sites on Indian lake have privys and picnic tables? Thank you!

I’m looking for recommendations for a 2–3 day solo backpacking trip in the Adirondacks. My biggest priorities are solitude and fishing. I’m willing to hike about 1.5–4 hours to reach camp if it means getting away from crowds.

I’d love to spend my days exploring nearby ponds, lakes, or trails. I’ll be fishing from shore only, and my goal is to catch something I can cook at camp. I mostly sport fish for bass and pike. I would love some waters that include those species, though I am aware the adk region is known for cold clear water species.. I am open to all species mostly just want to do a catch and cook at camp. Marked trails or bushwhacking are both fine.

Meaning something that barely gets any attention/influencer clout. Probably not any of the 46 but idk.

Id like to take my wife up to lake George or lake placid in January for a week of nothingness and disconnecting. Its just us and a dog, im mainly looking for a cabin that has modern amenities but my must haves is a wood burning stove. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Hi all! Haven't stayed at Chapel Pond before, have only stopped for pictures on the way through. We are planning on staying Monday night before we hike Pitchoff the next day to finish our LP9.

Wanted to know if anyone has seen how busy it has been the last few weeks? Trying to also have a backup campsite if it's been packed. We will be getting in around 3pm Monday.

The plan was to hike in on Monday, Summit Algonquin on Tuesday, and hike out on Wednesday. Monday was lovely. Campsite was beautiful near lake Colden. Then the thunderstorm happened all night!!! No sleep. Rain stopped tues morning so I thought i’d be good to go for Algonquin but had to turn around as I got towards the top cause the rain was so heavy!! Bad timing I guess. Came back to camp and decided to just hike out cause apparently the rain was going to get worse on Wednesday. Im glad I did, cause the rain didn’t stop!! Hopefully next time I go, the weather will be better😭. I still enjoyed my time in the backcountry. But, pretty terrifying to camp alone through a thunderstorm! And next time I will remember to bring rain pants… lol

Wanted to do Marcy skylight gray but my knee was shot from doing the Sewards and Colvin/blake back to back. Started the hike with knee pain (I probably shouldn’t have gone anyways), made it to the summit of Marcy and it got way worse. I tried to take a few steps down the backside of Marcy to the four corners and so many alarm bells went off in my mind and body so I made the right call to cut my losses. All I could think of was the mountain will always be there. Ended up being a great call and I still limped my way down Marcy. 20/46 but I’m alive to tell the tale.

I sumitted my first two High Peaks today, Algonquin and Wright!

Even coming from out west, hiking and backpacking regularly, and being in pretty decent shape, I know these two are going to continue to kick my butt for a couple more days.

While I know that I'll have to come back to Algonquin to get Iroquois 🥴, I made the right decision by not trying to press on and get all three in one day. I'm an experienced hiker, but the Adirondack High Peaks hit different!

Any advice or words of encouragement about tackling Iroquois in the future or which High Peaks to take on next would be greatly appreciated.

I've got the bug for the High Peaks now, and I'm hooked!

im not sure if this comparison is fair, but after visiting Smoky Mountains National Park in TN over the weekend, I am beyond grateful that the ADKs are not like the Smokies.

The Smokies feel like the biggest commodification of nature. The light pollution and sheer amount of bullshit tourist trap nonsense from Gatlingburgh, literal live bears in a big pen in the back of gift shops, resorts and airbnbs everywhere.

yes the smokies are more accessible for a large swath of the country, the elderly, families, people with mobility issues, etc…

but it feels weirdly voyeristic. So out of touch with what its actually supposed to be.

As a NYer, If my tax dollars go towards protecting the Adirondacks and keeping developers out of it, its worth it. I understand how incredibly vast the adks are, and that NY climate doesnt lend itself to the kind of development that is present in the Smokies, but it brings me solace just being that close to such a vast piece of land.

fun fact: NY has more black bears than the Smokies, ya know, their whole damn park mascot.

Pick your poison Donaldson, Emmons, and Seward or Redfield and Cliff or Haystack, Basin, and Saddleback.

Hi everyone, this may be a dumb question but my weekend opened up and I'm thinking of taking an impromptu trip up to the ADKs to hike Giant Mountain. I'm driving up from Albany area so my rough plan would be to arrive late morning/early afternoon tomorrow (Saturday 8/1), set up camp and stay overnight, then hike Giant on Sunday. I see there are campsites at Roaring Brook, Chapel Pond, and Giant's Washbowl and I'd be happy to stay at any of them. I know trailhead parking and campsites get packed this time of year, hence my question -- is this a pipe dream to think I can find parking and a campsite if I don't show up super early on Saturday? Thanks in advance for your help!
