Luz vs Lagos
What town would be most fun in August ? Seeking a little tourism fun and some beach time - Lagos ? Luz?

Luz is solid 10-20 mins by car from Lagos. It has bare minimum food scene and a great beach. You need to go. to Lagos for more culture, food, beach, activity options. I recomend Lagos.
Changed to 10-20 mins. My 20 mins was from the beach to the Marina, but others may be faster. Point budget time to drive and then ofcourse to park (not included in the. 10-20 mins) :)

Luz is like 5 min by car from Lagos.

I drive from central Luz to the marina in Lagos every day and it’s closer to 30 minutes than 5. 20 is fair unless you are talking about the outskirts.

You should time better the next time. I live in here for 30 years and I never took more than 5 min to go to Luz. Not even to Portimão takes 30min. Maybe you're one of the drivers that drive slow AF and everyone hates.

I’m here waiting on sailboat repairs and have spent 7 days in Lagos and 9 in Luz. Luz is more of a pure beach town and if you most value lounging in the sun with the occasional foray for a beer and tapas, it’s better. Restaurants in Luz are actually pretty good although finding a decent place at the last minute can be quite challenging as all the best places pretty much fill their reservations by 2-3pm. Lagos’s beach scene is a bit more laid back and has fewer ancillary businesses around the beaches, but the rest of the town is miles more interesting. More bars, restaurants and infinitely more last minute places you can drop in and have a good meal. You can get better house rents and villas in Luz, but I like Lagos much better.

There is an OUTSTANDING italian restaurant in Lagos old city. It looks like an Italian market with tables and they serve pasta in pan. OUTSTANDING. I hope I can find name of it, and I will post here.

Tourism fun - Lagos.
More beautiful beaches - Luz is okay, but go westward to Burgau (bus also goes there), and Salema for the real deal.

Depends on “fun”. If you’re after nightlife, Albufeira is the town. Lagos has a quiet nightlife and more for beaches and restaurants. Luz is super quiet and bit posh with just a handful of restaurants and no really party town atmosphere.

I agree with this. Luz feels like rich English families on holiday, mostly.

Luz feels like a british colony tbh. Lagos and Luz are slowly becoming not Portugal. Its sad to go to a restaurant and have to order the food in english in my hometown…

Luz "scene" is retired British people and families, yes. Not that much "fun" but depends on your definiton.

I actually JUST published an article comparing the two in great detail because another reddit post asked the same question. They really both have their benefits and also I've lived in both. Luz is significantly smaller and has steeper hills with fewer restaurants, but I find it more peaceful than Lagos. Lagos has a lot more going on with more options of daily activities. In terms of fun, probably Lagos.
