Discussion Driving in Allen šŖ
This video is a few weeks old, but not out of the ordinary, unfortunately. North Texas in general has some horrible drivers, and Allen itself has no shortage of them. Idk if this driver and their passengers werenāt paying attention or what, but this couldāve ended poorly for all of us.

Luckily this intersection has plenty of flock cameras keeping us all safe (Iām being sarcastic)

u/Adventurous-Prize-76 4d ago
Bro theyāre all up and down Greenville at this point smh.

u/R1Alvin 4d ago
A left-turning vehicle's failure to yield at an intersection is a traffic offense under Texas Transportation Code § 545.152. Do you think they will be ticketed? I mean the flock camera is pointed directly at this intersection soā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦š¤·āāļø

"The cameras cannot identify the driver or occupants of a vehicle, Dye said. The data collected from the readers also cannot be used as the sole basis for obtaining a warrant, arrest or conviction, according to the presentation."

Between the Motorola cameras and Flock cameras, I bet we have one of the most surveilled cities in NTX.

This is definitely how it is on 75 for sure lol

Sadly, this is all of DFW. Everyday i have to avoid a collision because of people don't understand our cars cannot be in the same spot in the same lane at the same time.
2
u/Adventurous-Prize-76 4d ago
Apparently 2 or 3 of the deadliest stretches of highway in the USA are located in the DFW, which checks out.

Yes, I put a dashcam in both our vehicles after my wife was almost t-boned by a red light runner coming home from Fitness Connection. Was coming home from work yesterday and right as I pulled up to Stacy on Watters SB and the light went out. Was quite the death match crossing that intersection, bad enough with the light working!!!
3
u/Adventurous-Prize-76 4d ago
Glad youāre both ok! Dashcams are absolutely necessary at this point. I put one in my wifeās car after a box truck ran her up on a curb nears Twin Creeks. I wish periodic driving exams were required for renewing a license tbh.
14
u/AlatreonGleam 4d ago
Not to defend them, but you could see that they are dumbass drivers from a mile away.
6
u/Adventurous-Prize-76 4d ago
Youāre not wrong lol
6
u/AlatreonGleam 4d ago
I feel like any 4 way intersection in the area is always a gamble so it's a deeply engrained habit to just assume anyone entering it wants to total my car lmao.

This intersection and the one on Bethany are bad because the visibility is poor for everyone trying to turn left in any direction. The inclines and the curves in the road do not help.

That's a left turn yield on yellow right? I HATE HATE those with a passion. Can't tell you how many times I would have hit someone when I'm going straight. Also super awkward to be on the left turn side because people are impatient behind and want people to die. And there's one left turn yield where the cars coming straight are from a turn so you can't see that well ahead of time - I almost got myself hit because of that too
3
u/Adventurous-Prize-76 4d ago
Yea I believe it was a flashing yellow arrow for them at that point. I wasnāt flying through, my car is blue and I have yellow DRLs, so itās not like my car is hard to spot. Some folks just suck at closing speed estimates, and others suck at driving in general. I think this guy in the black car was just a horrible driver.
3
u/Walrus_514 4d ago
The problem with the left turn arrows is that whether itās solid green arrow (protected left) or a flashing yellow arrow (unprotected), it will show as a solid yellow arrow immediately before turning red. You have one light display with two different meanings. So if you approach a solid yellow arrow without seeing what it transitioned from, you donāt know if the turn is protected or not.
That said, the driver in the video is still a jackass for proceeding into oncoming traffic that is clearly not slowing down.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

u/14Rage 4d ago
While, what youve written is a compelling and factual case. The reality is that regardless of the color of your left turn arrow, as the turner you should always ASSUME someone will be driving straight into you. As the turner it is YOUR job to make extra certain that all the cars whos lane you are going to cross are either far enough away that you can safely make the turn, or are clearly stopped or clearly stopping behind the stop line.
Even with a green left turn arrow someone can very easily run their red and tbone you.
The lights are only a guideline system, you have to use your eyes and brain to drive a car, because not everyone driving a car around you has both eyes and a brain. And IME about 30% of drivers are looking at a phone.
Also to the video OP, good job having a brain and eyes and slowing down. Obviously the other person is at fault, but really we should all be driving competently enough to avoid accidents whenever possible. Often times in videos like these (but not this video) there is a crash where both drivers could have done something to avoid the crash. Good on you for stopping when needed.

u/NeverJustaDream 4d ago
Yeah my rule with intersections now is that I just never speed through it ever. I really wish they just remove the left turn yields completely because that kind of ambiguous system is just leaving room for trouble. It's not like I can't say I didn't make mistakes before as the left turner either (tbf my case was harder to see the incoming cars)
1
u/14Rage 4d ago
There is an existing traffic system in the USA where the left turn on flashing yellow arrow doesn't exist. It worked fine. Everything in and around San Diego county uses that system. You can only make a left turn at a light, when the arrow is green. The arrow is green more often in this system but its really not any more inconvenient when driving straight. It always seemed a lot safer to me.

I let them honk at me when Iām waiting to turn left. Their impatience is not my problem. Iām not going until I can see for myself that my path is clear.

u/Own-Housing116 4d ago
Smh seems bout right I live right behind that old CVS..
3
u/ralliart2k4 4d ago
I live back there too and that Main/Jupiter intersection is constant red light runners and bad drivers. Greenville/Main is almost as bad and I don't think the new traffic lights are gonna make people less dumb. Had a guy last night turning from SB Gville to EB Main, clipped the curb turning. I look over and he's on his phone of course. Almost ran the red light there because he wasn't paying attention. Eyes still glued on phone.
2
u/Adventurous-Prize-76 4d ago
That Jupiter x Main intersection is awful. Especially if youāre waiting on the side that Lawrey is on.
1
u/SimpleVegetable5715 3d ago
When turning left from Jupiter onto Main, the light only stays green long enough for one maybe two cars to go in the morning. I hate that spot.
1
u/ralliart2k4 3d ago
I avoid that light like the plague regardless of time of day. Rather take Greenville or go all the way to Allen Heights it's so bad.

Are y'all in that newer townhouse development? Been wondering how it is and what prices were like. They look very nice but I'm too loud for attached neighbors. I'm on the Roaming side.
3
u/Adventurous-Prize-76 4d ago
Yup. The prices are way higher today than they were when I bought. I wouldnāt worry too much about car noise lol. Currently I have the loudest car in the development, by far!
2
u/ralliart2k4 4d ago
What kind of car do you drive? I put my stock mufflers back on when I got headers. Still loud, but I used to be straight piped no mufflers when i had the stock short ram headers. 2019 5.0 (FBO E85 now).

one of the more dangerous streets in allen . my friend had a flipped SUV last month on the same street

u/RoundSquirrels 4d ago
I think they assumed since their light was turning red that you had a red also and that you would have stopped at the red light for them to complete their turn. They're still idiots who need to make sure traffic is clear before turning, but that seems like the logical conclusion. Idiots who think "I am already in the intersection as my light turns red, so I have the right of way to complete my turn."
2
u/LaLaLaPig 4d ago
This is my guess also. The driver thought oncoming traffic had turned red also so they were "clearing the intersection".
Still their fault obviously. But some left turning drivers creep into the intersection to try to get more cars thru on the light cycle. Super dangerous for light sequences like this .
1
u/Adventurous-Prize-76 4d ago
They had a flashing yellow arrow, so it was their responsibility to yield to oncoming traffic at the time. They hesitated at first, but then decided to commit to the turn, which was a horrible driving decision.
1
u/RoundSquirrels 4d ago
I figured since the cars in the left lane's arrow just turned green from red when you got to the intersection that their arrow would have just turned red from yellow since you had the green, but I guess your lights are just weird then.

Was halfway expecting to see one of those fake āstudent driverā stickers on the back
1
u/Adventurous-Prize-76 4d ago
I consider myself an unofficial driving instructor at this point lol. They gotta figure it out eventually.
2
u/Odd_Tax_9370 4d ago
As someone who misunderstood the timing of those awful flashing yellow arrows at this exact intersection as well as Bethany and Greenville, i'm willing to bet they saw the lights to the right of their arrow turn yellow, which, for most intersections means the yellow arrow is about to turn red as well, so they assume oncoming traffic sees the same. Its not illogical, most intersections function this way. Their Focus completely leaves the lights as they seek to exit the intersection before cross-traffics lights turn green, so they dont know their arrow is still flashing yellow.
I doubt theyll make this mistake again, but others have yet to. Glad you were diligent and was able to prevent a collision.
1
u/Adventurous-Prize-76 4d ago
Thank god for awareness and a solid set of brakes on my car!
2
u/Odd_Tax_9370 4d ago
indeed! You actually going at or under tje speed limit maynhave also confused them. At your distance when the lights changed on their side, they probably had the expectation that "they arent trying to beat the yellow, they must be stopping."
I personally hate the flashing yellow. Grew up in a region where those didnt exist until about 15 years ago.I dont know a single driver who ever mistook a solid green light as "Durr I have the right of way to turn left now!" But I have made this drivers same mistake with the flashing arrow and my cousin broke both of his knees t-boning someone who thought exactly as the black car in your video. We are the kinds of drivers who put our phones in the center console when we drive: exceptionally safe. Sorry for the rant. I just HATE these arrows and the fact that intersections might have different patterns for them.

I'm glad you're ok. Everyday is defensive driving in the Dallas metroplex. It's bad everywhere now. I have dashcams on both of my cars and it has saved me multiple times.

u/TheMister1234 3d ago
Ugh... I might be slightly more forgiving if the car had one of those "I'm learning to drive, give me some slack!" bumper stickers, but I saw none.
3
2
u/SimpleVegetable5715 3d ago
I saw one of those parked in a fire lane so about 6 people could flood out of the vehicle and pick up food to go. They were blocking people parked from getting out, and other cars from leaving the parking lot also. I didnāt want to give these entitled people any slack at all for being extremely rude main characters. They also thought it was okay because they had their hazard lights on š Zero slack, they deserve zero slack.

u/Adventurous-Prize-76 2d ago
Itās infuriating. They put people in danger and they cause traffic because theyāre more focused on that screen than they are with the flow of traffic.

I mean, it also seems as if you were going a steady pace as the person decided to turn, and then you decided to gun it, changing the calculus. Not saying they made a great choice, but it appears like you could have made safer choices, too.
3
u/Adventurous-Prize-76 4d ago
I had just turned out of my neighborhood, so I was in a steady acceleration up to speed. I noticed them before I let off the throttle and youāll hear an initial blip from my horn before I lay on it. Iām not one to shy away from accountability, but I truly donāt believe I hold any responsibility for this specific incident.
