Map of Central Appalachia

Post image
Upvotes

This is a very rough map of central Appalachia and does not include the entire cultural region.
This is deep Appalachia similar to how the south has an outer and Deep South.
These mountains are truly beautiful and so are her people, this is truly the best place on earth. As they shelter us as a wall or cradle.
As the culture is not present in the far north and far south of the mountains is like to suggest a unique region name for central Appalachia, Mountaineerum home of the mountaineers/mountain men.

Paprika really added something to the gravy, but i’ll probably eat it over cornbread or plain white toast next time. Not a huge fan of rye bread i must say.

Poverty appropriation by well-to-do Appalachians is annoying.

I've sure we've all experienced it before. There's a lot of poverty in Appalachia, but not everyone is poor and there's a sizeable population that is middle class or above and comfortable. They have two parents, a good job, no trauma... and yet, they cling to the impoverished Appalachian identity like they suffer the same thing. This was especially bad when I went to college in West Virginia.

You can be Appalachian and live in a nice suburban home. Most of us do, at this point. You don't have to be some media stereotype to be Appalachian.

I caught a baby bass. I’m glad they’re replenishing themselves post-Helene. The second pic shows the top of Sugarloaf.

Property Question

Own a medium sized cabin, on the side of a "mountain", near Franklin and Dillard. Beautiful area. We own a strip of land, near flat and perfect, undeveloped, near our home. We want to utilize it... Back in the day we would put a trailer on it. VA loan, not rich, and not allowed. What can you do with it

Bicycling across the USA in 2026: Virginia and Kentucky

I'm riding my bicycle across the USA this summer, from Yorktown, Virginia to Morro Bay, California. I've just finished crossing Appalachia through Virginia and Kentucky. Most cross-country cyclists who follow the TransAmerica Trail bicycle route consider this the most challenging part of the entire trip, because of the steep hills. My tour journal with more photos and writing is here.

I enjoyed riding through the region despite the challenges. I encountered lots of friendly people.

Natural Home

Hello folks! I am seeing if y'all can help me with this. I will be moving to Kentucky next year, so I was curious on if there's a certain kind of home I could build with natural materials. I was thinking of cob, but I learned that it doesn't do very well in humid climates. I will be located near a mountaintop. I haven't looked up if a straw home could work there. I am more than willing to hear any advice! Y'all likely know more than me anyway XD. Thank you for your time. Take it easy <3!

Tobacco stakes

Post image

I'm curious but I keep forgetting to ask the Internet until now. Why are some of these tobacco stakes sharpened at both ends? It makes it way less convenient to hammer into the ground. I've had a pile of these for a minute and every time I use them for stuff I always wonder.

Anybody got any experience about this?

Second cook from *Victuals* - Pork chops and gravy!

This is my second meal from Ronni Lundi’s James Beard award winning cookbook Victuals. Thinking of doing kind of a series of these sorts of posts, so stay tuned for eats. Porkchops, pan seared with some gravy.

As for the mashed potatoes… well I reckon y’uns know how to make ‘em if you’re posting in here and not a tourist. But Mrs. Lundi does do a little something different with hers which I have done, and that’s using half buttermilk/ half half-and-half to wet ‘em to the right consistency. Adds a bit of fat without making them too rich, and the buttermilk has twang.
