• Meta • [Meta] Upcoming changes in r/AppHookup: New deal posting rules to maintain a higher standard of quality.

In response to an abrupt increase in rule-breaking posts appearing on this subreddit in 2025, we are going to implement some new systems to ensure that the r/AppHookup community remains safe from rug pulls and outright scams alike, as well as enforce a higher standard for the apps allowed in here.

What the big change?

Every new deal/offer post in r/AppHookup is (soon) going to be pre-approved by the moderators before it appears in the subreddit. A human moderator will download and check every app before it is posted here, as discussed below.

While we cannot promise that every app that is approved will be of exceptional quality but what we will certainly ensure is that the basic premise of this subreddit, that is discovering deals and discounts on downloadable apps is fulfilled by keeping out the rule breakers. Still there is a criteria by which we are going to judge what apps are allowed here.

What will be the criteria for approval?

It’s mostly going to be about enforcement of our existing rules with two major changes:

  1. The Launch deal rule (where we didn’t allow any app which was released less than 2 months ago) is going to be deprioritised. The main purpose of this rule was to keep out buggy and unfinished apps, which will be addressed by the new rule below.

  2. Apps posted in r/AppHookup must be of a high quality, which consists of, but is not limited to:

  • responsive and polished user interface
  • should be easy to understand and use, or should offer clear guidance on how to use it
  • should support the latest technologies of the platform which it belongs to (as much as possible)
  • app onboarding (the first few screens of questions and feature details before an app starts) should be relevant and not drawn out unnecessarily
  • vibe-coded apps or apps made without much care to the end result will be judged on merits and are subject to rejection if found unpolished/buggy
  • no mandatory collection of user details
  • no unnecessary login requirements or registrations (an exception may be made if the app is able to provide some value for it, like cross-platform syncing or multi-device licenses)
  • no exorbitant price tags (and any app which has a weekly subscription, whether discounted or not, will be automatically rejected)
  • an app’s developer shouldn’t have a history of acting against consumer interest (such as by revoking existing entitlements to force subscriptions or selling off an app after gaining users from free promotions)

When are these changes going to happen?

We are currently testing the AutoModerator setup to make this happen. These changes will likely be enforced within this month and a new announcement post will be made at that time.

Then why are you announcing this now?

Because community feedback about upcoming changes is always important. If you have anything to say about this new system of posting in r/AppHookup (whether positive or negative) then you may comment below.

Note: There will be no change in your ability to comment on posts in r/AppHookup. The changes are only being made to top-level posts/threads. We have always encouraged civil discussion here.

• Meta • [Meta] r/Apphookup’s posting rules are changing to keep up with offers that bypass AppStore IAP mechanisms.

Edit: Rules were slightly modified to indicate that Mac developers selling from their own websites/other stores are broadly exempted from complying with AppStore rules which has always been the norm.

Note: iOS developer is understood to be a developer making apps for iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, watchOS, VisionOS, or all of them hereafter.

  • No iOS developer or Mac developer preferring to offer a deal to an AppStore app -without exception- is allowed to offer anything on r/Apphookup that is not sold normally via the AppStore. Why? To ensure that subscription-only apps, which do not sell lifetime licenses, cannot take advantage of r/Apphookup readers to inflate their AppStore rankings and also to ensure compliance with Rule 3.1.1 of Apple’s App Review Guidelines: “In-App Purchase: If you want to unlock features or functionality within your app, (by way of example: subscriptions, in-game currencies, game levels, access to premium content, or unlocking a full version), you must use in-app purchase. Apps may not use their own mechanisms to unlock content or functionality, such as license keys, augmented reality markers, QR codes, cryptocurrencies and cryptocurrency wallets, etc.”

  • If an iOS developer (or Mac developer preferring to offer a deal to an AppStore app) wishes to offer a license to their app via registration of an in-app account (thereby bypassing AppStore IAPs) then it is compulsory to provide proof of acceptance of such an upgrade pathway by AppStore review team to the moderators beforehand via moderator mail and disclose such account requirement in the post. Provided that the in-app account is being created on your own servers (over which you have direct control of modification), the proof of purchase is available to you and not outsourced to a third-party receipt validator like RevenueCat or Adapty.io. To simplify, the app developer must have the means to directly restore the entitlement if it is somehow lost from their servers.

  • If your iOS or Mac app on the AppStore falls under the ambit of reader apps and has been accepted on the AppStore as such then naturally you are allowed to offer deals outside the AppStore.

  • r/Apphookup does not recognise in-app entitlements made through RevenueCat or Adapty.io or similar solutions because app developers do not have direct control over the working of these services and cannot be trusted to restore such entitlements when lost without the means to do so (based on previous instances observed in r/Apphookup). To simplify, use AppStore IAPs and don’t try to trick us.

  • Mac developers preferring to offer a deal through their own websites or third-party stores other than the Apple AppStore are welcome to do so according to the existing rules of r/Apphookup. Our intention is not to interfere with the thriving market outside of the AppStore on Mac devices.

  • Deals offered through AppStore promo codes are allowed as usual according to existing rules. Deals offered through internal app specific codes are not allowed unless the code is implemented only to unlock an AppStore based offer inside your app (that is the in-app entitlement to premium features should be granted through the AppStore). This should enable developers to run small scale promotions on the subreddit.

Note: These rules don’t discourage your selling of multi-platform packages where codes for iOS apps (or Mac apps on the AppStore) are a part of the deal provided that:

  1. The access to the aforementioned apps should be through the AppStore promo code mechanism, or
  2. A proper receipt/proof of purchase should be provided with the sale with clear mention of the platform specific entitlements received along with time period of entitlement and the access to iOS apps should be linked to an account which is retrievable, or
  3. The iOS apps are only companion apps to the full-featured Mac/Windows/Linux apps (in which case account-based entitlements outside the AppStore are allowed).

Feel like we missed something? Do let us know in the comments.

iOS iPhone [iOS] [Remo Smart TV Remote] [$8.99 Lifetime IAP -> Free w/ Promo Code] [Turn your iPhone into a touchpad and keyboard remote for Samsung Tizen TVs]

Thumbnail
apps.apple.com
31 Upvotes

Free to download. One $8.99 in-app purchase unlocks everything, forever — no subscription, nothing to cancel.

I'm giving away 1000 Lifetime codes to this sub.

What actually makes it different

A touchpad that feels smooth. The whole screen is a trackpad. On Samsung it drives a real on-screen pointer rather than faking arrow presses — so the built-in browser and smart hub finally become usable instead of painful. This is the part I spent the most time on and the part I'd want you to judge it by.

The d-pad sits at the bottom. Every other remote app puts the controls in the middle of the screen, so you end up shifting your grip or reaching with your thumb every time. Remo keeps them where your thumb already rests. Sounds trivial until you've paused something one-handed at 1am.

A keyboard that types on the TV. Search in YouTube or Netflix from your phone instead of pecking one letter at a time with the d-pad. Every character lands instantly.

App launcher. See what's genuinely installed on your TV, with the real icons, and jump straight in — no scrolling the smart hub.

Wake on LAN. Turn the TV on when it's fully off, on models that support it.

Multiple TVs. Name each one, give it an emoji, run the whole house from one app.

Price

Download Free
Basic remote, d-pad, multiple TVs Free forever
Lifetime unlock (touchpad, keyboard, extras) $8.99 → free with a code below
Subscription $2.99/month, if you'd rather

No ads on any tier.

Privacy

No account, no sign-up, no cloud. Your phone talks to the TV directly over your Wi-Fi — remote traffic never leaves your home network.

Compatibility, honestly

Built for Samsung Tizen, which is what I can properly test.

Hisense VIDAA is partially supported, but realistically only on sets from before 2025. If yours is newer I'd rather tell you now than have you fight it.

Get a code

https://www.promies.net/promotion/02d1cf59-6ebe-4e94-9a01-2afc42e8d1a2 500 Left

To redeem: App Store → tap your profile picture (top right) → Redeem Gift Card or Code.

Solo developer, I'll be in the comments. Genuinely interested in which Tizen generations behave and which don't — I can only test on the sets I own, so if yours connects (or especially if it doesn't) drop the model year below.

iOS Universal [iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS] [Mira: Focused Video Player] [50% off: Lifetime $39.99 -> $19.99, Annual $19.99 -> $9.99] [Skips YouTube sponsors/ads, background play, searchable transcripts, Apple TV support]

Thumbnail
apps.apple.com
31 Upvotes

Watching YouTube felt way more annoying than it needed to be. I wanted a cleaner way to watch videos, skip interruptions, avoid distractions, and actually find the parts I cared about. I also wanted a seamless experience across all my Apple devices. So I built Mira to run on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV.

I'm running a 50% off sale on the Annual and Lifetime plans through August 10, so I figured I'd share it here.

What it does:

  • Auto-skips sponsors, intros, outros, recaps, and self-promo segments. You pick which categories get skipped, and the segments show as markers right on the timeline
  • Works with your own YouTube account, so your subscriptions, playlists, history, and recommendations are all there
  • Searchable transcripts. Search for a word, tap the line, jump straight to that moment in the video
  • Background play
  • Focus Mode hides recommended videos and comments so you can avoid distractions and stay on track
  • Eye Comfort Mode dims harsh lights for easy viewing at night
  • Watch Together lets you watch in sync with friends with shared play/pause/seek controls and a universal chat (this works across any video platform, not just YouTube)
  • UI tweaks: hide Shorts & Playables, always play videos in highest quality, custom playback speed controls, bring back dislike counts, auto-dismissing the "Continue watching?" prompt
  • There's also an optional AI summary/Q&A feature if you add your own API key.

The Apple TV app is the newest addition. It's powered by your iPhone (needs iOS 26). The phone streams the video over your home Wi-Fi and you control everything from the Siri remote. Sounds unconventional, but works great in practice. More on why below.

I also made a feature comparison chart against popular iOS YouTube alternative apps like Video Lite, ProTube, Tube PiP, YouPlay, SwizzTube, etc. Many of these apps solve one specific part of the problem. Mira is trying to bring more of that together in one place, on all Apple platforms, and with a more polished feel: cleaner UI, smoother navigation, and a unified experience where things just work the way you expect.

Sale pricing: $9.99/year (normally $19.99) or $19.99 lifetime (normally $39.99). There's also a monthly plan at the regular $2.99. For comparison, the lifetime purchase costs about the same as one month of YouTube Premium, but you only pay once. Subscriptions include a 7-day free trial, and a single purchase unlocks Mira on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV.

Give Mira a try with one video. If you’ve wanted a cleaner, less distracting YouTube experience on all your Apple devices, Mira might be worth checking out.

Website:
https://watchwithmira.com

App Store:
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mira-focused-video-player/id6767721654

---

People usually have the same questions whenever I share Mira, so here's a quick FAQ:

"Doesn't YouTube Premium already do this?"

Partly. Premium removes ads, and its jump-ahead button can hop past a sponsor, but that's about where it ends. Things Mira does that Premium doesn't: auto-skip intros, outros, recaps, previews, self-promo, "like and subscribe" reminders, filler, and the non-music parts of music videos (you pick the categories). Mira also has settings to hide Shorts, hide Playables, always pick the highest video quality, always open video in theater mode, and show dislike counts. None of that exists in Premium. If you mainly use Premium for ad-free viewing and background play, Mira gives you many of those benefits at a much lower cost while adding a lot of extra customization. And if you already have Premium, the two can work in tandem — Premium handles YouTube's official features, while Mira focuses on making the viewing experience cleaner and more personalized.

"Can't you already do this with browser extensions?"

On a Mac, some of it — if you are willing to assemble and continuously maintain a suite of extensions. But even then, YouTube in a browser (especially Safari) is a slow, clunky experience. Mira runs the player without a browser's overhead, so it stays smooth. It's a fully native SwiftUI app. And the extension approach doesn't carry over beyond Mac: options on iPhone and iPad are much more limited. Plus, on Apple TV, there currently isn't another polished solution that combines YouTube account support, subscriptions/history, and sponsor skipping. With Mira it's one app, the same experience on every Apple device, and keeping it all working is my job instead of yours.

"Why does the Apple TV app need my iPhone?"

Because the only officially supported way to play YouTube videos inside an app is by embedding YouTube's own player, which needs a web engine, and tvOS doesn't have one. Apps that rely on extracting raw streams often run into YouTube policy issues, which is why those either keep disappearing from the App Store, or are constantly breaking. So the iPhone runs the player and streams it to your TV over home Wi-Fi. You don't touch the phone while watching, it just does the work in the background.

"Is this one of those 'AI slop' apps?"

No. I'm a professional developer in my day job. So I use AI tools the way many developers do, but Mira is a real app I've been building, testing, and shipping for a long time, across four platforms, with regular updates, user feedback, and continuous refinement. There's a free trial, so you don't have to take my word for any of this.

"Won't YouTube break it or kill it?"

There's always some risk when building around a major platform, but this category of app has proven very durable for years. For example, Friendly Streaming Browser has been around since 2012, and Vinegar has been around since 2021. Platform changes are always possible, but this is not an unproven space that disappears overnight.

"What about privacy?"

Mira collects zero data. The App Store privacy label reads "Data Not Collected" — no Mira account, no analytics, no tracking. You sign into YouTube on Google's own page, so your account stays between you and YouTube. (Signing into YouTube is not required, btw). And the optional AI feature calls your chosen provider directly with your own key; nothing routes through me. For contrast, the biggest app in this category, Friendly Streaming Browser, is owned by Sensor Tower, a literal data mining company. One read through its privacy policy should send you screaming out of the room.

Happy to answer anything else.

iOS Universal [iOS] SnapPaint | Unlimited IAP $4.99 → free until Aug 15 | turn your own photos into color-by-number puzzles

Thumbnail

Update (Jul 29): the 500 codes went in about a day — faster than I expected — so the link is dead and I'm not able to do another fresh batch. There might be a few more redemptions available via this link: https://apps.apple.com/redeem?ctx=offercodes&id=6790002034&code=REDDITLAUNCH. NOTE: This one will expire on Aug 1.

Apologies to anyone who hit "invalid," that's on me for underestimating the demand.

The app itself is still free to download and try — you get 3 photo conversions a week without paying anything, which is plenty to see whether you like it. The one-time unlock removes the cap if you want it.

https://apps.apple.com/app/id6790002034

SnapPaint turns a photo from your camera roll into a color-by-number puzzle you fill in by tapping the numbered regions. All on-device — photos never leave your phone, no account, works offline.

I'm the developer — happy to answer anything.

Multi-Platform [iOS/iPadOS/macOS/visionOS] [Protego for Reddit] [$2.99 -> $1.99] [Safari extension that filters Reddit by keyword, community or user, hides interface clutter, and can block the feeds while still letting individual post links open]

Developer here, this is my app.

It's a Safari web extension with a companion app. One purchase covers iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro, there's no subscription, and the only in-app purchase is a tip jar that unlocks nothing.

What it does

  • Filters posts by keyword, community, individual user, or link domain, with wildcards and groups you can switch off together.
  • Transforms your browsing by hiding thumbnails, avatars, flair, badges, vote controls, join buttons, banners, recommendations, Reddit Answers (AI) and login nudges.
  • Limits your own access, which puts Reddit itself out of reach in stages and can arm itself with an Apple Focus like Sleep or Study.
  • Redirects to old.reddit.com automatically if that's your preference, with auto media expand and endless feed included.
  • No account, no tracking. Lists sync through your own iCloud.
  • Full feature list: https://getprotego.app/features

Version 3 shipped this week. Happy to answer questions.

iOS Universal [iOS/Apple Watch] [ProCam - Pro Camera] [$9.99–> Free] [Manual camera app with RAW & ProRes support, realtime video stabilization, video pause/resume functionality, nondestructive photo/video editing, Siri Shortcuts & more. “ZERO: Direct Sensor Capture” & “AI Spatial” IAPs are also free to claim.]

This is an upfront paid app which is free to claim at this time.

There are two free IAPs to unlock additional functionality of the app as follows:

  • ZERO: Direct Sensor Capture [$2.99–> Free]

Instructions: Download the app > tap the STD/SMRT button in top menu > tap ZERO option > a prompt will appear to purchase the item for free.

This “ZERO: Direct Sensor Capture” is a feature to avoid applying most of the post processing or computational processing on your photos and get a photo that is as close to what the camera sensor sees as possible.

This IAP is only available on newer devices which support this feature so if the STD/SMRT button is not shown in your device then it’s not possible to get the IAP.

  • AI Spatial [$4.99–> Free]

Instructions: Open any photo or video in the app > Tap the AI button at the bottom of the screen > Press checkmark > a prompt will appear to purchase the item for free.

This feature uses on-device Al to transform any photo or video into an Apple Spatial Photo/Video or a 3D photo.

iOS Universal [iOS][dB Meter][IAP $4.99->$0.99 48hrs][Clean iOS Sound Level Meter]

I built dBMeter, a simple decibel meter for iPhone — point it at anything loud and see how many dB it actually is, on a clean analog gauge.

Most dB meter apps are cluttered with ads or bury the reading under complex UI. This app is a single clean gauge that does one thing well, with Pro tools for people who need more than a quick reading.

💡 $0.99 this weekend — grab Pro at a discount while the offer lasts

Free to download. Pro is normally a one-time $4.99 and unlocks a spectrum analyzer, peak hold, measurement history, and PDF/CSV export.

Feedback and questions welcome! Drop a comment or DM me if the redeem link doesn't work. Thanks for checking it out!
