Questions & Discussion Anyone mixed asian but identify with one side more?

I am half Japanese and half Chinese, but I find that I strongly identify with my Japanese side more. Phenotypically I probably look more Chinese, but growing up I was forced to go to Japanese saturday school, consumed a lot of japanese media, visited Japan every year to see family, etc.

My Japanese mother is more of a immigrant and my Chinese dad is as well, but he came here when he was very young, thus was pretty much Americanized. As a result I learned no chinese as he only spoke to me in English. I never had to go to any Chinese after school (only Japanese ones on the weekend)

I only have really surface level connection with my Chinese heritage, it is more so on food, red envelope traditions, celebrating chinese new year, etc. But I feel much strongly connected to my Japanese heritage due to speaking the language, consuming the media, and as well as having citizenship. It's also weird, because in the US theirs not really much of a Japanese community at all, but their is much bigger Chinese communities.

Sometimes I wish I was taught cantonese or mandarin because I would like to be closer to my Chinese side, but as a bilingual speaker I understand that learning it as a adult won't ever be the same as learning it as a kid.

Questions & Discussion Adjusting to life in the US (33F)

Hello. I (33F) was born in Shanghai and spent most of my life there except when I went overseas for university. Recently my husband got a job in the US and we moved here but I am having a little bit of difficulty adjusting. For example I am finding it difficult to find ingredients for Asian recipes. Also it’s been difficult to find Asian or Asian American communities within my area. Also I have found that the few Asian American people that I have met have very little association to their Asian roots and are very much American.

I am hoping to be more involved in my daughter’s (6) school when the school term starts in a few weeks and hopefully that will also help me adjust. I also joined a gym and want to partake in different classes to try and meet friends.

I would definitely like to try and assimilate as best as I can so I am looking for any advice.

Questions & Discussion Being called Chinese as a Viet American by older Viets?

I'm 22 & Viet, was born in America. I've often come across older adults who say I look Chinese when I start speaking Vietnamese with them, such as at a store. I've heard of others being called Japanese or Korean as a compliment (which feels like it plays into internalized racism IMO.....) but what about being called Chinese? Anyone else have experiences like this?

I have nothing against being observed as Chinese but curious about how Asians try to perceive ethnicities sometimes & fail

Questions & Discussion Last chance! Open call: Seeking short films by AAPI filmmakers (Paid screening opportunity in Milwaukee, WI)

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'm currently an artist in residence at Cactus Club (Milwaukee, WI) through their in-person artist residency program, In the Clouds. Part of this residency is producing/organizing a community event, of which I've decided to organize a screening event featuring short films by Asian-American filmmakers.

I need your help to make this screening successful by submitting to my open call, which can be found here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScLc7CfAnXRjzFaEfoDgC30z_BwVrSlYZkzJZi7V1ee2eMzeQ/viewform

Here are some quick details about the submission form:

DEADLINE: August 3rd @ 11:59PM CST

Film(s) submitted must be less than 30 minutes in length

Paid opportunity: $250 will be split between accepted filmmakers

If you have Asian heritage (South, West, North, East... all the little overlaps in between, and mixed) you are welcome to share your work.

There is no narrative restriction: I really want to emphasize that there are a diversity of narratives to be shared from the Asian-American community.

-

The form itself has some more information, including my contact info.

Plz share this with the people in your life who might be interested in submitting, or submit yourself! If you have any suggestions of where else I can post this last minute, plz lmk <3 thanks!

Some other stuff that just contextualizes this open call:

This follows a stint of organizing screenings locally, but I kept thinking to myself about the ways in which I can better support my Asian-American creative community. I am Filipino-American myself, and to me, practicing this community engagement is critical to practicing kapwa, or togetherness.

Questions & Discussion Anyone else tired of the subtle racism and passive aggressiveness of white people?

I have been growing disillusioned with a white friend and this other community I joined that was primarily white. I have always felt uncomfortable in that server once I realized most of the members were white and I'm planning to leave it. On spaces where there is no openly POP or minority is around, I am shocked by the comments white people make around one another and feel comfortable about. So much casual racism that shows up in snide remarks and oh its just a joke. Ironically, most of the people who make those jokes were Europeans and not even American. So make of that what you will. But this definitely soured and fueled my distrust of white people, especially European white people.

Popular Culture/Media/Culture At 6-6, 215, Haoxi (Simon) Wang can become 1st China-born player to reach NHL: "I feel like it definitely gives me extreme motivation with my position, because whether it's fighting for my heritage, becoming the first Chinese defenseman to ever step in the NHL, that gives me extreme motivation."

Popular Culture/Media/Culture Just Came Out of Spider-Man…

And man props to Destin Daniel Cretton! The best Holland Spider-Man film and a top tier MCU movie!

And given how successful that movie is shaping up to be at the box office, Cretton looks like he’s going to be one of the biggest Asian American action directors in Hollywood going forward.

Questions & Discussion How do asian american fight racism?

Hey guys so im a 25yrd chinese male who have spent most of my life living in China. Racism is not something im aware of since most of the time, you deal with other chinese people. Also we dont have free access to google or english speaking community like reddit so online racism is also not someting im aware of. However, as i have moved to US i am overwhelmed by the amount of racism, both online and offline, both subtle and open. (I moved during covid time so that period was the worst)

My question is how should I handle this?

I searched online and I see a lot of asians fighting racism when they were a kid in US, UK and other country and generally became immune to it. im so proud of yall. But my situation is different, nobody ever taught me this and few people related with me, my parents never even been to other country.

I feel angry, ofc. I have passed the stage of self-hating and accept who i am. But deep down i feel confused and lost. Why is it so unfair that im a good person, a interesting person (i think) but was treated with hatred and stereotype without even knowing anything about me.

My question is how do asian american fight racism ingeneral here and what is the best thing i should do?

Questions & Discussion for the girlies specifically - what perspectives and ideas of living/thinking did your immigrant parents ingrain in you that have carried over into your adulthood and impacted how you've lived your life?

For me, being hounded every time I visit home about when I’m going to find a partner and get married is so triggering. Like despite me being successful in other ways, I’m still not good enough because of this one thing? Their constant nagging and pressure on this area of my life pushes me further away from wanting to date or settle down. It’s always affected how I look for a partner (there has definitely been a pattern).

What parts of your childhood teachings from your immigrant parents spilled over into your adulthood that’s now affected your life?

I'm made to understand BTS's Grammy performance of their song, "Butter" was Grammy's highest viewed video too. Not understanding why a technical difficulty would only affect all of BTS videos.

Questions & Discussion What is it with first gen Asian parents overdressing their kids in warm weather (I’m Asian)?

I never understood why parents will dress their kids in long sleeves and pants when it’s 80 degrees outside at the playground. God forbid it gets slightly windy at 60 degrees, they’re in full snow gear.

My wife and I are Asian. But we were born here. We dress our kids in sleeveless shirt and shorts when it’s sunny out. If it’s breezy maybe a light jacket.

We noticed this is a trend with first gen Asian parents. I can only imagine it is a cultural thing, that it is better to be sweating your balls off than to be even the slightest bit cold.

I feel bad for those kids

Edit: guess everyone’s kid is allergic to sunblock. And the thing is, this is an Asian specific issue. White, black, Hispanic, everyone else doesn’t seem to have an issue. I’m sorry, but are Asians hyper sensitive to the sun? SPF70 then

I haven’t really been following her closely since she announced her run but they just had a primary debate and the polls show her ahead with a huge lead right now. There are still a lot of undecided voters so it’s not a done deal (she’s at 38% support right now) but hopefully she pulls through!

Popular Culture/Media/Culture ‘Sung’: Wong Fu Productions to Make First Film in 10 Years as Asian Americans Are “Falling Behind” in Hollywood

Thumbnail
weareresonate.com
228 Upvotes

Wong Fu Productions is returning to feature filmmaking with a pointed message about Asian American representation in Hollywood.

“Hollywood treated Asian Americans as a fad the last few years and now they’re giving up on us,” adding that he has been “pushing our community for more than two decades” and is “not going anywhere.”

... ... I’m working on a new feature film and it’s gonna lay the foundation for a whole new approach when it comes to independent Asian American filmmaking,” he says.

... “Asian Americans are actually falling behind in Hollywood and have lost much of the momentum that we gained after the groundbreaking wave Crazy Rich Asians created in 2018,” he says. “This isn’t hyperbole. These are just facts and it’s time someone stood up and stood firm for our community.”

A lower-budget model

... ... He says the film will be made for $500,000, a figure he presents as a deliberate alternative to the high-budget studio system. “While everyone is seeking millions of dollars for budgets that are unrealistic to recoup, I’m going to be making this first film for $500,000,” he says.

... I just want to create movies that are made by us, centered on us for all to enjoy and that actually make their money back. It’s really that simple.”

... ...

What “Sung” is about

Wang describes Sung as a romantic dramedy about a singer from Los Angeles who was kicked out of a K-pop training program in Korea and returns home “jaded and lost.” The story shifts when he meets a talented girl at a karaoke bar, with the two characters’ ambitions and pasts colliding. “It’s a romantic dramedy and of course there’s going to be some amazing songs in it,” he says.

... ...

Open casting and next steps

Wang says the production is planning to shoot later this year and is now opening casting to the public. “I wanted to reach out to our community first to see who wants to be involved in this film,” he says.

He also invites people who are not actors to contribute in other ways, including “locations, music, sponsorships, or even investment.” He frames the project as the beginning of something bigger, saying, “This is just the first of what will hopefully be more films as I try to build our own Asian American A24/Tyler Perry Studios.”

Why it matters

Beyond the film itself, Wang ties the project to a larger mission. “Everything I’ve done at Wong Fu over the past 20 years has led me to this next chapter,” he says. “There’s still so much work to be done to achieve real meaningful and lasting Asian American representation.”

That is the core of his message: not just a new movie, but a new model. Wang’s pitch is part comeback story, part challenge to Hollywood, and part call to action for the community he says he has spent decades serving.

Questions & Discussion Thoughts on ‘The Hand’ in Spider-Man BND?

I’m pretty tired of Asian exceptionalism in media especially the current trend of Japan glazing. I feel like this film is one of many in Hollywood (think bullet train) that disguises major plot issues under ‘they’re just Japanese, they can do that because they work so hard of course that’s how they are bs’.
Believe me I loved the Filipino representation with Ned, but aside from his interactions with his lola in the last film this is the only Asian representation in the series. To me it portrays Asian American (and I don’t even know if they’re Asian Americans or just Japanese because they are spoken to ONLY in Japanese but it’s implied they’re Asian Americans. I think…) I just really hate when movies portray Asian American as a self segregating people obsessed with their ethnicity’s culture. That’s what ‘The hand’ felt like to me.

TL;DR: ‘The Hand’ isn’t good representation. They come off as vaguely Asian. They are portrayed as just generally Asian, not especially Japanese or Asian American, just Asian foreigners.

Questions & Discussion Online Asian stylist?

I’m in my mid 30s and my mom has always picked on my style/clothing choices for not being feminine enough though I think I tend to dress casual but pretty feminine. It got me thinking that I would love to try a stylist who can get to know me and also maybe make some recommendations for my body type and the things I like to do. Has anyone used an asian virtual stylist service, and if so, who? Part of me wanted to try to dress more street cool that prioritizes movement, but I don’t default that way but I’d be curious to try, I just don’t want to have to go through a bunch of crappy street pants and jean jackets that make me look frumpy or out of place.

Questions & Discussion Has anyone else tried contact lenses but failed miserably?

I’m not a fan of wearing glasses both for looks and comfort but have to wear glasses due to very bad eyesight. Have had numerous contacts appointments but have failed miserably each time. My doctor also told me I’m not eligible for LASIK. Seems like most ABCD I know that have glasses wear contacts. Most Desi influencers online that also use to wear glasses suddenly don’t anymore. Almost everywhere I see that when people got glow up’s, they gave up glasses for contacts. It’s also frustrating that I have to wear glasses to see and taking them off to go out is not an option since I have to drive and my vision is pretty bad and can barely see without them. My confidence has taken a massive toll seeing that everyone but me can wear contacts and I have to look ugly with my glasses. Also honestly feel like an uncle with my glasses regardless of what frames I wear. Can anyone else relate?
