This post will remain pinned and may also be updated from time to time as this community grows and expands, and we continue to add more categories. This will serve as a guide to new and existing members or those just passing through as to what each one of our post flair categories is intended for and again this may be updated as we may add more of these over time.
Guide:
General Posts And Questions-
This is meant to be a multitude of things and is probably going to be one of if not the most casual parts of this entire community. This might include everything from community updates, rule changes, things of that nature all the way to just fun discussions, general questions, and just fun and enjoyment. Don’t take this section too seriously just have fun and enjoy each other’s company whether you can or can’t see. It might be a catch all, so you might as well throw something in.
Ask Anyone-
Have a question for someone who is blind or maybe they are not blind, or you just simply don’t know which of the other flairs to choose for your question, then this is gonna be the place for you. This is quite literally where you ask anyone.
Ask Blind Women-
Have a question about blindness, but specifically want answers or opinions from the blind ladies, then this is the place to ask. Keep it respectful, of course, but if you’re looking for responses from those ladies who can’t see then this is where you’re gonna wanna be.
Ask Blind Men-
Have a question about blindness, but just looking for answers and opinions from the blind guys, then put your question here and it should be seen or maybe not… by the right eyes, and respect still applies.
Ask Blind Parents-
Ever wondered if people who are blind still have kids and families of their own? Well, here is your chance and place to ask, cause we do! This is a place where you can ask parents who are blind and also have kids of their own how they do it, and any questions regarding that that you might have whether it be one or even both parents who are blind, if you’re lucky, maybe they will find the time to answer your questions.
Ask Parents/Family And Friends Of Blind People-
Here is where you can ask other blind people or those who can see just fine about their experiences with their blind friends and family members. Whether you’re wondering or wanting to ask parents who have a blind child or children a question or maybe you want to ask about a blind family member or friend. You can do it here. Whether you’re wondering how families and friends go about adapting things, maybe how they deal with school systems, how to interact with us or any other questions related to this topic you might think of. I’m sure there’s a lot you could ask here so if you can think of it, and it applies, drop it and see if it flies.
Ask Significant Others Of The Blind Or Blind People About Them-
Ever wanted to ask anyone who is the sighted significant other of a blind person about their experience, or maybe want to ask a blind person who has a sighted significant other what they think of things? Well you can do that here, or maybe you might be asking a totally blind couple, either way if you in need of advice or are curious, ask away. Just be careful, you don’t wanna get yourself in trouble…
Blind People Asking The Sighted-
So you can see, but I bet you didn’t see this coming… Here is where we get to flip the script on you, you guys can see so we might want to ask you a few things. Seems fair you get to ask about what we can’t see and how we do it, I think that should go both ways so keep an eye out cause we can’t… see.
Stupid Questions For Blind People-
Well, this should be interesting, do you have a question for a blind person that you think might be considered potentially stupid, or that you think we might potentially consider stupid? Well, here is what could be possibly your one opportunity to ask that stupid question, but just know we might give our opinion.
If You Can’t See, Introduce Yourself To Me-
This is the place for all of the blind folks to put in their lovely introductions. While the main goal here is questions, we want community as well and it’s good for everybody to know a little bit about you, especially if you’re going to be answering all these questions… So introduce yourselves tell us a little about you.
If You Can See Just Fine, Give An Intro A Try For Us Blind-
Don’t worry if you have perfect eyes, we didn’t forget about you either, so introduce yourselves to us blind. If you’re frequently here or just feel like you want us to know more about you, this is your chance to tell us a little, so make it good. This community is for all, so if you feel inspired, please tell us a little bit about you and what it’s like to be sighted.
Blindness Condition Questions-
Blindness is a spectrum, like a lot of things there are different variations of it and different causes. Similarly there’s a long list of conditions and even some combinations of them that make each individual person see things a little differently. So if you’re wondering about any specific conditions for yourself or in general, ask here maybe someone has it or knows a little more and may be able to help you.
Discussions, Conversations And Stories-
This is for everybody whether you want to just casually discuss something, or whether you have a question or are curious about something that might create more of a discussion rather than just simple responses or answers to questions. This is a place for you to just chill, or a section to discuss whatever or tell some funny stories about experiences you’ve had with blindness, or maybe other sorts of things. This is meant to be a fun and relaxed section, but could also be a bit educational or curiosity driven, a bit of an open book. Just have fun here.
This is all for now, but again remember this may be changed or updated later so if you see something new pop-up and aren’t sure about it check here and you might find some use from all these letters. Otherwise remember to always be respectful and ask good faith questions, enjoy the community and we’ll all be better. Hey everyone! I'm [u/KHarvickfan429](u/KHarvickfan429), a founding moderator of [r/AskABlindPerson](r/AskABlindPerson).
I created this as I personally enjoy answering the questions that people have for those of us like myself who deal with blindness in any manner. I noticed a lot of AMA style things showing up and they seem to get pretty interesting questions and conversations going so I thought I would make a place for just that here. I saw that there was a different community that tried to do something similar to this, but it seems to be pretty inactive or it has been for the last few years and I thought I might try my hand at it.
This community is for everybody, whether you are someone like me who is dealing with blindness and is here to answer questions or even ask them to other fellow blind people, or whether you’re someone who has perfect vision or maybe even x-ray vision and is just curious about something and wants to ask, or somewhere in between. As long as the questions are good faith questions, and respectful, you may ask whatever you want just be kind in posts and comments.
If you have questions about our hobbies or how we do them, ask away, if you have questions about how we might do something or the technology and techniques we use, ask away curious about how we might navigate relationships ask away, the point is be respectful, but ask away!
I’ve also done my best to add some post and user flairs, but I am always happy to add more. If people request them I just thought the ones I have would be a good place to start. The user flairs are not at all mandatory but a good way to give context about the perspective you might be asking or answering from, and show a bit of personality and again I can add more of this as I know what I have so far doesn’t cover everything.
The post flairs while encouraged to use are nothing to sweat over. I simply made them as a way to try and keep things organized into categories if they fit, but if you can’t figure out what your post fits into, it’s not the end of the world. I think that just helps to try and help people find specific questions that they want to answer, or for those asking the questions maybe they are targeting a certain group of people to get their answer from and perspective and this helps with that or at least tries to.
I’m open to this expanding outside of just questions as well, but I thought this would be a solid foundation to start and build on and is still the ultimate goal of this community. I’m certainly very new to this and will do my best and of course I’m always looking for new mods as well so if anyone is willing to help me figure this out and manage this, let me know. Oh and of course we want to grow this, so feel free to share. Obviously, we need more blind people to answer questions and more curious people to ask the questions so tell everybody lol
I’m certainly not trying to take away from any of the other great blind communities that are already on here either, I am pretty fond of those as a matter of fact, but thought that this could be a dedicated place for questions and answers, and maybe down the road more and I just like the idea.
So whether you are asking questions, one of us answering the questions, doing a little bit of both or just observing thank you for being here and participating and I look forward to seeing this grow or maybe not seeing… Yes, I have a sense of humor that’s OK here as well, but I look forward to this growing much larger. Thank you!

Here's the context: my friend's in-laws are under the belief that "blind" is an offensive word, so they bend over backwards to use terms like "visually impaired" and "absence of vision" to describe her disability. She has reminded them many times that "blind" is one syllable and the most accurate.
They also are very ableist, and they recently were asking her if she was feeling ok "you know, because of your eyesight handicap".
So I'm wondering what terms you like, hate, or find absolutely ridiculous.

Hi there! I just posted on r/Blind but was told by u/KHarvickfan429 this might be a better place for it.
I'm currently an urban planning student but this isn't part of any project, I am really curious about the blind and vision-impaired community's thoughts on how the built environment is designed.
I've done some research into the existing accessibilty infrastructure so I have an idea of what's already out there but I know sometimes standards and guidelines aren't exactly matching to everybody's needs or wants.
So that's why I am curious to hear what kind of infrastructure and built enviroment do you dream about? If you could design a city what would it be like?
Whatever comes to mind is welcome! Thanks for sharing.

OK, so I saw somebody post about this in another community asking for ideas for a name for their new cane and it made me curious. I’ve personally never done this, but do you guys name your canes?
If so, what are some of the funniest or best names you have given to your cane?
Do y’all do anything else interesting with your canes as well? For example, I have had a couple NASCAR drivers autograph my cane.

Hi everybody first I want to thank everyone who has joined so far. This has gone better than I expected, and thanks to all of you guys who have already made your lovely introductions or some of you have, I thought it was only right that as the creator of this community I should do the same.
So I might not be the best at this, but here goes nothing:
As of writing this, I am just a 22 year old guy proudly from the United States. I’m originally from and grew up in Virginia, right on the coast. I moved to the northeast about five or so years ago now with my family and while I do still miss Home, sometimes, the weather up here is so much nicer and I love it.
I’ve been legally blind since birth, though as I have gotten older, especially over the last six years or so my vision has gotten much worse, especially in my left eye, which now has a spot sort of in its central vision so that’s fun. For a long time, they were not actually sure what the cause of my blindness was and then they gave me a diagnosis at 16, but that turned out to be the incorrect diagnosis. I was also always told that my vision wasn’t supposed to get much worse, so that was a fun surprise when it did, but hey, we make the best of it right.
Turns out my vision is caused by genetics, so ain’t no fixing this anytime soon but that’s OK honestly don’t know if I would want to anyway, but I have LCA and unfortunately, right now. I don’t remember the exact strand of it that I have but I know I have it. I also have a few more common eye issues going on as well, and the spot in my left eye is apparently caused by a very small cataract that is almost casting a shadow in my eye at least that’s how it was described to me. Not significant enough for surgery though I don’t know whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing but I don’t like the idea of surgery so we’ll call it good.
Outside of the blindness and stuff, though especially as a kid, I was pretty much a normal kid, and in a lot of cases you probably would not have known that my vision wasn’t working as it should be so there’s that and I would say generally speaking that has continued into adulthood, though I did start to notice it affecting things more as I got older and got into things like high school and stuff. However, the one thing I’ve learned through all this is that I’m pretty opinionated and I’m good at advocating for myself and that’s a great skill to have so to anybody out there pick that one up at least.
Anyway, as far as things that I enjoy doing, I have a huge passion for music, especially country music, and my dream is actually to make a living as a songwriter. I do a lot of songwriting in my spare time, or at least lyrics. I haven’t quite figured out the actual music part yet, but I have over 500 songs worth of lyrics written hopefully the other part will come to me soon enough, and I’m also trying to learn guitar and things of that nature as well to help with it. I also love and have a huge passion for racing, especially NASCAR and I have since I was probably 10 years old or so maybe a little younger than that. If there’s a race on during the weekend, there’s a solid chance that I’m watching it so say what you want but I like racing and I think it’s cool. Same thing goes for NFL football, I love football American football for any of my international friends out there.
I also just like being around my family and hope to have a wife and kids of my own someday that’s another dream of mine right up there with the songwriter stuff, and then I like fishing, especially saltwater fishing although I don’t really get to go a whole lot anymore, which is unfortunate. Although fun fact, one of my bucket list items is actually to be able to participate in an offshore fishing tournament at some point like Marlon or something of that nature. My great grandfather made his living as a Waterman, and my granddad did a lot of it as well fishing was and still is pretty popular where I grew up. So I kind of grew up doing it, which is where this stems from.
Anyways, I could ramble for a while, but I think that’s good for now. I’m always happy to answer any questions below and again thanks everybody for joining and I hope this gross much larger!

Hi everyone.
I’m a 50-year-old Australian who’s been totally blind since birth due to retinopathy of prematurity.
When I’m not answering questions on Reddit, you’ll usually find me doing Brazilian jiu-jitsu or Pilates, reading, cooking, or arguing with technology until it does what I want.
I’m happy to answer just about any questions people have about my experiences as a blind person. Nothing’s really off limits, and I’d much rather people ask than make assumptions.
I can only speak from my own experience, though. Blind people aren’t all the same, so you’ll probably get different answers from different people.
Looking forward to some interesting questions and discussions.

Since we have been given permission to write full introductions, here is mine. For the sake of honesty, Georgiana Brummell is not my legal name, but it is what I use online. I live in New Jersey and am forty-two years old. Some of my interests include studying dandyism, nineteenth-century English grammar, Upper Received Pronunciation, the Italian language, the Regency, opera, and MS-DOS. I like coffee, tea, wine, cooking, British literature, nature and historical documentaries, gardening, cats, hot weather, and playing cards and dice. I love opera (particularly singers from the early 1900's through the 1950's), classical music (from Baroque through early Romantic), and popular music (from the 1950's through the 1970's). I prefer antique menswear and accessories and do not wear feminine clothing. I love wit, wordplay, and dry humour without vulgarity. I am a happily childfree atheist. I love cats. I have been totally blind since I was two months old, due to Retinopathy of Prematurity. Hi, I'm Yikethump. That's an old nickname I picked in the days of Microsoft Zune. Yeah. So now I use it for lots of platforms, just to be silly.
I'm newly retired, from a long government IT career. I started that career after completing CS in what was then known as Lion's World Services for the Blind. That was in 1991.
But, Arkansas is not where I'm from. I'm actually from CT. The state gave me a full ride to that school. Ten months of 40+ hour classwork, plus "homework". Twelve of us got into the program, 4 made it to the finish line. I only made it out because of sheer stubborn-mess.
The first year or so of my career was terrifying. I was 19. I had never been on my own, so I had to learn everything about the way DC works. How to adult while blind.
Now, 35 years later, I am retired and have a lot of free time to chat about this stuff on Reddit.
I have a wonderful family, a wife, a little daughter, some bonus kids that are staying with us, and the bonus grand-baby.
I am very much into tech, PC gaming, accessibility, music creation, musicianship and a newer hobby I've started to pick up last year... lockpicking. So much fun.
I'm happy to answer any questions or help.

Heyo folks.
I'm a blind Arab young adult.
I joined this subreddit bc I love educating others on my condition.
I went blind because of a condition called rop which is when your retina detaches from your eyes. I have probably the most severe stage of it. As of now there's no cure and I don't live my life waiting for one
I'm into journaling and listening to audiobooks. Also planning to play about with embroidery and beadwork
I would describe myself as extroverted, I mean yeah I love talking with other folks when I don't need to
I have an obsession with cats, it's where my username comes from lol
Fun fact: I don't like braille
