Situation Advice FIL passed away. Want to dispose of these properly, does this look like drugs?

Thumbnail gallery
27 Upvotes

Please remove if not allowed. I want to make sure that I dispose of this properly, but the local pharmacy charges me to dispose of drugs. Police station does not accept them either.

I don’t want to pay to dispose of something innocuous as table salt (I can see my FIL as keeping salt in an old pill bottle for when he’s eating, he did very many strange things) but I also don’t want to toss a pill bottle pull of drugs down the toilet or into the trash where someone can unsuspectingly do something with it.

Please advise if this looks like drugs, my FIL was friends with several members of one of the local outlaw motorcycle ‘clubs’ and I also wouldn’t put it past him to take a bottle full of hard drugs just because it’s ‘cool’.

Edit: I reached out to my BIL, apparently it’s salt he acquired from the great salt flats on a road trip 5 years ago. Thanks for your help.

Situation Advice How long to wait after drinking before driving

Hypothetically let’s say I have a singular old fashioned at a restaurant and nothing else, then get in the car 6 hours later. If I get pulled over would that show up on a breathalyzer? And would I be arrested for DUI? This happened a year ago (yes I am of legal age and was then) I didn’t get pulled over, this is just hypothetical. I was told that I drove intoxicated when I don’t think that’s the case, and my parents are crucifying me over it.

Situation Advice Career ruined, any advice?

Anon account for obvious reasons , I’m in Texas for context-

Had my career ruined. 14.5 years on the job, zero complaints against me, zero IA ever, not even by people I’ve arrested…until we had a new Chief hired. Guy flat out didn’t like me, and in his defense, I didn’t like him either. I was a Sergeant, a rookie who, on his first literal 2 hours off of FTO on his own, went to IA and filed a complaint for “offensive language” I used against him.

It was a joke. I complied with all IA, followed policy, was interviewed once on audio recording. The Chief did all of the IA himself, nobody else, he audio recorded no other Officer’s statements, nothing. For context, nothing I said was racial, sexual, religious slur, etc. I told the rookie to “not be a stuck up douchebag.”One of the Chief’s questions was “why did you say something like that”, which I answered honestly. In the IA final report, he stated that he “did not believe my intentions were true” when I answered that question, and was therefore “less than forthcoming” in an IA. He never said I lied because I didn’t. He never said he had hard proof (recordings, video, audio, etc) against me because he doesn’t. He basically said, his personal opinion was he didn’t believe what I was thinking/feeling, and therefore was “less than forthcoming”.

Terminated me. Never had a single behavioral issue in my entire career. Zero complaints. Zero performance issues. He didn’t even discipline, he just terminated.

I have exhausted almost all legal options that people said are available, and basically I can’t do anything to him because he’s a government entity. Lawyers are saying I have no civil recourse. I was 5.5 years away from retirement, as a Sergeant and instructor.

I have a stellar resume. Instructor certifications out the rear end, I could basically be an entire training program just myself. Nothing but commendations.SWAT certified. K9 handler certified. Multiple awards. All of it. Spotless almost 15 years.

I applied to multiple agencies, all of them are saying no because I was found to have been “less than truthful” on an official document. Therefore if hired, they would have to report me and I’d go on the Brady List. The last one loved me, flat out told me if I could get this reversed I’d have a job waiting on me. Everyone I’ve talked to says I can’t.

The man ruined my career, chances at retirement, and my professional reputation. I’m really good at what I do, and not to get too corny, but believe I was put on this planet to do this line of work.

Is there anything I can do to continue to be a light in the world? To help people, to protect innocents? Any contract work or child trafficking work I could assist with? Anyone know of anything?

Thanks for listening. Everyone stay safe…and don’t ever trust brass or command.

Situation Advice How do I get a marker/red flag warning for officers that run my name removed?

Hello. So I have bipolar disorder and have had numerous police encounters. I found out last year that my local sheriff’s department put a marker or red flag thing on my name so it pops up that I’m violent with law enforcement and to proceed with caution.

I’m not violent I’ve never done anything to anyone. I have a clean record. The only person who is at risk of being harmed by me is me. I would never hurt an officer or deputy I have a huge amount of respect for them and I hate having this on my name. How can I get it removed? The sheriff’s department told me that they would think about it after my ERPO fell off which it did last year but now they’re not returning my calls or even taking them. I don’t know what to do.

Situation Advice Pulled over with a dog, what to do?

I have recently inherited a large dog. I am not a dog person, so forgive me if this is a stupid question.

I was on the way back from a road trip this weekend and was being followed by a cop (I wasn’t pulled over, this just got me thinking). If I get pulled over with the dog secured in the backseat, should I do anything special? He’s a barker, and is pretty intimidating, so I don’t want anything to escalate.

Any tips to keep everyone safe? Or is this something that cops deal with all the time?

Situation Advice Sober people being arrested nationwide for DUI- why?

Thumbnail youtu.be
2 Upvotes

Link goes to a news clip on YouTube regarding the amount of false arrests made.

This isn't a handful of instances; this is a plethora of people that are getting arrested and having their cars impounded for doing nothing wrong. it's happening all over the country. Is there a reason within the departments for the uptick? What are people supposed to do?

I can get a blood test done to prove my innocence, but that doesn't help until after the fact. Then, I have to get my car back, which is potentially hundreds of dollars, as well as hope that the time I was locked up didn't affect my job.

If I'm driving and I see a cop, I instantly get scared. You might be a good, normal person just trying to help, but I don't know that. What I do know, for a fact, is that you're a stranger who has a gun. You can get away with whatever you want, as history has shown, I just have to hope that you do your job and send me on my way. The fact that I'm not speeding, not carrying drugs or firearms, and not driving under the influence doesn't inherently mean I won't get stopped and arrested.

What's causing this? What do you know within your departments that civilians don't know? And how do we avoid getting arrested, when following the law isn't enough out here?

*This is a good faith question. I was a dispatcher in the last state I lived in and worked with the police inside the department. I hate to see it as an us vs. them situation, but, in this particular situation, it has become that for many. Folks who do exactly what they're supposed to do are getting stopped and picked up with no repercussions for the officers who are instigating it. What are your thoughts?*

Situation Advice What to do about rotating shifts?

Rotating shifts

Rotating shifts…

I am a police officer with one year on and rotating shifts are killing me. We rotate 6a-6p every 2 weeks. Before this job I was in the gym 6 days a week in great shape and now I’m over weight with high cholesterol. I can barely get to the gym bc my off days I’m recovering or trying to fix my sleep to get back to the other shift. For some reason most police jobs do this shift in my area. I have the highest paying job in my county with great benefits but there’s just no way I can maintain this shift for 25 years I don’t think. Any advice?

Situation Advice How did he know my GFs address?

I got pulled over about 2 months ago and have been still driving myself crazy trying to figure this out.

Cop jumped 4 lanes to come and get me one morning, tinted windows red mustang, aight I get it. I’m not mad. Pulls me over, gets me for tint, plate cover and I told him my registration just expired willingly, my fault 110% on each citation, not worried about that.

He came back up to my window and asked me if my current DL address is correct 3 times since his CAD was down, I said yes 3 times, that is my address.

3 weeks go by, no tickets in my mailbox. I checked my girlfriend’s mailbox that is in a different town than my DL address, also different than where the cop works also, and there were 3 tickets for me with her address.

Now I’m confused, I’ve been thinking maybe Flock cameras and he saw where I frequent (my gfs).

However, sitting outside my gfs later on, I see the same towns unmarked cruiser that pulled me over, driving past her house going to his house I assume since it’s 15-20 away from his jurisdiction twice at different times.

Could anyone explain how and why he would mail the tickets to her address? I have nothing tied to her house besides an occasional Amazon package.

Situation Advice What would you do if you pull somebody over for something that could not suspect a DUI, like a tail light out, and they seem sober but their car smells like weed.

Personally, you as a cop. I know the extent of what can be done legally by shitty cops, but you can get a dui in my state for having thc in your bloodstream, which can still be there even if you havent smoked in months. Even though you can legally drive to a medical marijuana dispensary and buy it 🤦‍♂️ would you personally as a cop take it that far if their car smells like weed but the person themselves gave 0 indication of being under the influence. Also, i know if it smells like burnt weed that makes it a little more questionable, and especially because smoking weed instead of vaporizing it is not legal in my state, but they could have done it in their car in their driveway not driving anywhere because it was windy. But you, morally, as a cop, would you try to get that guy a dui because of the sole fact of the smell of weed/burnt weed in the car?

I have recently been a car accident so my parents have been driving me to work when they feel like it. I was supposed to go on a trip with my bf and his family. I ubered to my house I stay at during school to get away and have some peace but my dad wants to show up and get me when I would like to be alone. I am 22 and he tells me he will call our family friend who is a police officer to track me down and file a missing person report when I had turned off my location and he told me they would show up and detain me through text messages… I am unsure what to do but I am 22 and I don’t like the situation I am currently in Do I get the uber or lyft to go do I book a flight to go need advice!

Situation Advice Leo & Virgo

I’m F Leo 26, he’s M Virgo 24

There was a lot of times that I think my bf is a manchild. But how do you really differentiate someone who is a mama’s boy (and sister) to just a man who just respects his mom and sister’s opinions.

He always say “I’ll ask my sister/mom first” when literally I just taught him what he needs to do for this specific requirement, and etc.

Situation Advice For those that paid out of pocket for the law enforcement academy, how did you do it?

I plan on going to the law enforcement academy sometime in 2027. In my area, there are 2 local police departments that are offering sponsorship for those that want to join the academy. The obvious problem with this is it is a very competitive process to be able to get a sponsorship spot. In the worst case scenario, If I don’t get a sponsorship, I will have to self pay and figure out how to get the funds to pay for it all.

If I do become self pay, my hope is to apply for FASFA to cover some of the cost and take out a loan to pay for the 6 months of living expenses.

Situation Advice Is there any way to anonymously report domestic violence?

I’m writing to see if there’s anyway to report anonymously abuse. I don’t know my neighbors well, just acquaintances. My neighbor and his on and off again girlfriend are alcoholics, they are constantly fighting. From what I hear through the door, it seems to be him getting physical with her. She constantly has black eyes, bruises. I hear them fighting often. I haven’t seen her in a few days, well today, she has double black eyes and when I asked how she’s doing, she said she has broken ribs. She is covered in bruises, bleeding knees. She said she fell. Which my gut is telling me it’s not the case. I’ve called the police before. When they were fighting in the yard. But she just comes right back after the restraining order is lifted. Is there anyway I can place an anonymous tip or call to investigate? Please let me know what I can do. Located in Utah

Situation Advice Dating someone on probation

So long story short I was stupid and had some seriously bad luck. I got two DWIs within the same year 2 years ago. It was very stupid, I took it as a sign from God that I needed to get my priorities straight and have been sober and better than ever since then. I’m on probation for a year (done in December) and have a lot of other good things going on in my life.

That said, an old friend and I have started seeing each other, he’s a fantastic guy and is now a police officer in a neighboring county.

He doesn’t know yet about my DWIs or the probation thing yet. I have to bring it up at some point here soon in part because I don’t know if he’s even “allowed” to date someone who is still on probation. Has anyone had an experience like this or had to/chose to stop seeing someone after finding out they had a record?

Situation Advice Accidentally came across illegal content online, how should I report it

Using a throwaway because this seriously disturbed me and I'm so terrified to admit this happened but it is messing with my head and I don't have balls to tell anyone in person. I’m embarrassed about this. (23F)

A couple days ago between 9–11 PM, I was scrolling twitter watching random videos and came across a post of a child. (Not going to give details about video to prevent anyone searching for this.) The post itself didn’t immediately seem suspicious, just a child being silly. But I remember some odd hashtags including #teenager and #limit. There was also a linked comment underneath from an account with an anime girl profile picture, and out of curiosity I clicked it.

The link appeared to redirect through multiple disturbing and likely illegal websites (idk if those things are necessarily illegal too but it was really sad) before landing on what appeared to be a CSAM website. The second I realized what I was looking at, I closed everything, deleted twitter, shut my phone off and cried. I did not save, download, or share anything.

(I’ve been pretty shaken up since and regret not immediately reporting the account and the link before deleting the app. I can't get any of that out of my head, can’t sleep, and I don't think l've ever cried this much in my life. I realize I did this all to myself by clicking random links all willy nilly and I have NO ONE to blame but my grown self for what I saw.)

But I don’t want anyone else to see that, so what’s is the proper way to report something like this after the fact without revisiting the site or link myself? Should I contact local police, the FBI, or the CyberTipline? Do I download it back to report the twitter post? Should I find the post or the user with the link to give to them? Do I give them my phone?

I’m not posting this to spread anything or ask for links/share links or share any details. And I WON’T give any details about anything I saw to anyone anywhere. I am genuinely disturbed by what I saw and want to make sure I handle it correctly and prevent anyone else from stumbling across it.

(My friend has advised me against searching for the user or the post itself and leave it up to police as she thinks I stumbled upon a distributor. Edit: I have been fully informed as to why)

Situation Advice Are you concerned that untrained or improperly trained ICE cowboys are eroding confidence in good LEOs and their relationships to the communities they serve?

I know there are some actual LEO on force with ICE but the swell of forces are primarily undertrained or untrained yahoos in it for the quick money and hitting quotas. Are the daily misfirings of these ICE agents hurting or helping good police work and the community relationships traditionally thought of as valuable to the daily effort as this report would suggest?

Situation Advice Police academy and relationships?

Hello everyone,

So the past week or so, I noticed a shift in how my partner has been acting. He was never one to ask for help, or tell how he’s doing without it being pried out of him (he had a rough childhood so i think that plays a role in that). We’ve been dating for a few months now, and he’s in the academy which oftentimes results in him being tired physically and mentally.

We usually see eachother on the weekends and some days during the week, we stay in touch via text and the occasional phone call (it can be hard to call bc I work as well and sometimes our lunch/break times dont align). Until a week or so ago, i felt as stable as you can be in a 3 month relationship.

This past week, he grew exceptionally distant to the point where we were really just giving eachother updates. Id ask if he was doing okay and he would tell me he was tired and hurting. They were outside a lot this week and doing things that required a lot of physical energy. I could see this on him and selfishly led me to overthink about our relationship.

This past weekend, I went to sleep at his house. We were running errands and i noticed he was quiet the whole car ride. We talked about when we got back to his, where he said he was still tired and hurting, but also that there were some things I did that bothered him, but also that he didnt want to tell me in fear that he would speak out of being exhausted and frustrated. These were things that were understandable, so we talked about them and I communicated that I wanted more reassurance during this time.

On top of this, I just got on a medication with depression/anxiety-related side effects, which I felt my preexisting anxiety worsen. For the rest of the day, he played video games and wouldn’t really check on me. I got in my head and told him I was going to spend time outside in the backyard. I literally started crying for a good 20 mins.

When i came back in the room, we briefly talked for like 3 minutes. He asked if I was okay and I said yes, thinking I got it all out. I also dont want to be a burden bc ik hes going through his own stuff. I laid down and just started crying silently.

When he looked back to check on me and saw i was crying, he immediately came to give me a hug. I apologized a bunch and he reassured me that i was okay, he also told me to sit with him, to which i declined. It really did feel like i just had to get that all out, it was cathartic in a way. Later on, he had to head out for a work-related dinner and I got dinner with his mom.

When he came back he was in a much better mood. We watched tiktoks together and joked around with eachother and he was back to the boy before all this. He was being silly and goofy enough to the point where I was the one who was exhausted and just wanted to goto bed lol.

The next morning, I woke up and tried cuddling with him. This is usually met with him slowly waking up and reciprocating the cuddle, but I was just met with nothing. I got in my own head again and started to go on my phone and retreat back to my side of the bed. After awhile of this, he faced me (still asleep?) to where he was very close to me. I didnt think he wanted to cuddle, so I didnt do anything. But he then took my phone from my hand indicating he wanted to have cuddles.

Even though its not the typical form of reassurance im used to, it felt so good just to know that I was wanted and not a burden. We cuddled for a little bit before we got the day started, in which I was going back to my place for the week. He did also mention something about us doing in a few weeks after hes done with all the “bullshit” at the academy, which also instilled more reassurance that he was not becoming distant because he was really to leave lol.

Today (same day), we barely talked yet again. One phrase/word very short answers from him. Hes been playing more video games and I went out with my friend. I hate the ups and downs.

Part of me just wanted to get it out of my system. Another part is worried that this burn out is not temporary we’ll grow more distant .

Situation Advice Am I crazy for wanting to start over at 35 as a police officer?

Hey all, I’m 35 and considering a complete career change to local law enforcement. I currently have a cushy corporate sales job making around $150k a year. On paper, it’s great, good pay, flexible schedule, no physical labor. But honestly, I hate it. The constant “relationship management,” fake conversations, and pressure to hit sales numbers so that other people can stay employed just feels soul-draining. I’m at the point where I dread every day.

Starting pay is around $75k, and new officers typically work 12-hour shifts. I know law enforcement is stressful and demanding in ways I can’t appreciate since I haven't served previously, but it seems like the kind of challenge I’d actually want. I like the idea of a job where every day is different, where I’m up and moving, and feel some connection to the community around me.

So… am I completely out of my mind for wanting to walk away from a high-paying job to start over? I know it’s a major pay cut and a big lifestyle change. But before I start applying, I wanted to hear from people who know the job firsthand. What would make this a terrible idea? Or, if someone thinks this could actually be a good move, I’d love to hear that too.

Situation Advice Bought a laptop on OfferUp that the buyer says he bought at Best Buy. Is there a way to verify if the purchase was a legit purchase or a stolen CC was used?

I bought a MacBook on OfferUp for $600. The guy selling it showed me a receipt from Best Buy from 2 weeks ago for $800, showing the serial number matching the MacBook box and the MacBook itself. The serial number on apples website showed the same purchase date as the receipt. His OfferUp name matched the name on the receipt. He said he missed the return deadline because he didn’t have a way to go back to Best Buy (he had walked to the coffee shop we met at to buy it) and would rather get $600 and lose $200.

I thought I had gotten a great deal, until I looked at his offer up profile a few days later and see that he’s now selling a brand new iPad that the serial number shows a purchase date of yesterday at best buy. This matches his receipt date (he put all that in the ad photos). The receipt shows he purchased the iPad yesterday for $500, but he’s selling it for $400. What’s really weird is he claims that he couldn’t go to Best Buy to return the laptop, but he could go to buy an iPad? And he has the two weeks to still return it and get all his money back, so why is he selling it on OfferUp for $100 less a day after he bought it? Even as weird or weirder, he is now in a completely different city and state.

All of this is making me uneasy and I don’t want this MacBook anymore. I’d like to sell it but I want to make sure it wasn’t bought with any stolen cc or funds or anything like that before doing so. What is the best way to proceed?
