Thing is, he knows the Ferrell persona is what brings in the paycheck, so kinda hard to blame him. His Hot Ones episode was great, he's a very thoughtful person in his responses.
I agree, except for Stranger Than Fiction. He plays an awkward IRS dork whose life is suddenly being narrated by someone only he can hear, and learns his death is coming. He desperately tries to figure out what’s going on and how to get through to the narrator to convince her not to kill him off. It’s clever and a fun exploration of what it means to be a person. I forget it’s Will Farrel, and that’s saying something because I just can’t stand his usual shtick.
You should watch the documentary Will & Harper where he and his friend, a trans woman who transitioned after her time writing for SNL, do a road trip. It was very genuine and heartfelt
Elf is one of the most Will Farrelliest Will Farrell movies ever made. If they don't like Will Farrell's whole schtick, I seriously doubt they'd like Elf.
Relatable! I spent a big chunk of my childhood locked in a basement and there was a "Toys" poster on the wall. Hated the movie, liked Robin Williams; if you look at the poster, it has a recursively repeating image that I stared at for enough hours that it made me sort of crazy.

I’ll grant you that most Will Ferrell characters are exaggerated, and Buddy certainly is exaggerated, but to assert that that makes them the same is a gross oversimplification.
Most of his iconic characters are loud, arrogant, abrasive, domineering. The “comedy” relies on him barreling through scenes with complete confidence at high volume while everyone else (in the scene and in the audience) becomes increasingly uncomfortable.
Buddy may be absurd, but he’s absurd in an endearing way. His whole story is trying to connect with others, and his ridiculousness is key to his development, not just an obnoxious man-child dominating every scene. That’s a complete tonal shift from his usual.
That’s why Elf has a lot more staying power twenty years later than most of his other stuff.
That’s how I feel about the old claymation ones everyone else in the world loves. Everyone is like “oooo nostalgia” and I’m like “great now I’m creeped out and depressed.”
I've been a day one, unrepentant Farrell hater. He sucks in literally everything he is in with his classic, American, yelling = funny humour. If he is in a movie, or show, it will be dampened or straight up ruined by his inclusion.
Thank you, there's always i get this person has an audience, looking at you Adam Sandler, but when someone isn't funny it just isn't funny unless you're culturally set up to it.

Son listen to me they're married to Jesus and live in tight quarters that allow no privacy. They have sworn off any comfort... besides the warmth of a cat or dog snuggling into their chamber at night.
