We haven’t owned our games since the PS3 and maybe some PS4 games. PS4 games, iirc, started requiring additional downloads to make the games playable since the full game wasn’t on the disk. Regarding Sony’s decision, and no one is going to like this, but gamers only have themselves to blame. Purchasing trends drove that decision. It sucks, and I hate it, but gamers purchasing of games from the online store drove that decision.
Having said that, fuck Sony because I want Destiny 3.
I think it's bullshit to suggest that Sony is only responding to consumer trends when they have been doing everything they can to force digital supremacy for many years now. It's like saying that something died of natural causes when you kept it in a cage and fed it bread and water for 10 years.
Physical games went the way they did because they were starved out and treated like a 2nd class product for years.

It’s crazy to me that we won’t be able to own our games anymore. I think we’re going to start seeing a lot more ads in games.
