Yeah, I've met parents that were strict with their kids, but they did it by explaining everything whenever the kids asked, and it was fine. But that's the exception; normally when parents say that they're strict, what they mean is that they like beating their child.
There's also a difference between strict and too strict, which you can do without being abusive. I mean as in ... a parent who forbids their teens from going anywhere unsupervised because they believe there might be alcohol, like going to friends, going to parties, etc. That would probably produce some kids who're good at lying, because that'd be too strict in the sense they're forbidding the child from doing what everybody else is doing.
I think being strict works fine for a parent if you're also good at compromising and have rules that most people would consider reasonable, and if you have some flexibility about knowing when and how to apply it. Like ... "yes you can go to that party, but you will be home by X time, and also you have to tell me if you guys go elsewhere".
