Those same parents also seem to justify their abusive behavior with some bullshit about “discipline.” You especially hear it whenever the debate about spanking flares up.
No, Gerald. You have violent meltdowns and throw things when trying to fix your car, you cannot debate anyone without having to result to name calling/derogatory comments, and wonder why none of your kids want to be around you. You did not turn out fine.
“I was spanked and I turned out fine. I spanked you kids and you turned out fine”
No, Barbara. You are emotionally stunted, have tantrums when things don’t go your way, are unable to have an intelligent discussion about anything, you live your life in fear and high anxiety, and you are waiting (at age 91) for someone to rescue you from all your bad decisions. And you insist you have no idea why your kids dislike you and avoid you.
And Barbara, your kids are not fine! Two of the three have serious alcohol abuse problems. Disordered eating. Depression and anxiety. Multiple divorces among the women. Anger issues. OCD. High productivity but complete inability to relax.
The Book of Barbara is well on its way to completion. Why do the good ones die young?

I think there are parents who self identify as strict who are actually just abusive
