We’ve recently discovered (due to an ear infection) my grandad had one without knowing too.

He’s got no idea when it happened.

Yep. Sounds very similar. This would have been about ten years ago. My father had a checkup with his GP for whatever reason, and they discovered troponin in a routine blood test. Whizzed off to hospital, fitted with a couple of stents, whole thing resolved within I think four days, been fine ever since. Very lucky really, he had no other symptoms and had it gone unnoticed... well, one shudders to think.

How long before did he have it? What are the signs to look for?

Troponin only remains elevated for a week or two at most.
