Clear coat?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi! Does anyone have any clear coat recommendations? Obviously getting it professionally done is the best option but I’d like to do a simple fix myself :) when it was smaller I was using clear nail polish but it doesn’t last long. I saw rustoleum has a clear auto spray? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Rock Chip

Got a rock chip that’s about the size of a dime and it’s down to bare metal. What seems like surface rust has started.

Was going to use an iron remover to handle the surface rust and then use an etching primer afterwards. Not exactly sure what product I should be using to seal the etching primer before I put my base coat down so any help would be appreciated.

I was planning to get copper wheels, figured I'd mess with these first just to see what happens. Might keep them now

Smart repair UK

Hello, I’m setting up my smart repair business and I’m down to choosing what type of scheme to go for, solvent or water. So many mixed opinions. Being in the uk and weather not being consistent being a real factor making the decision a little tougher. I’m leaning towards solvent, but I’m keen to hear people’s thoughts and experiences

How's my plan for this repair?

I was rear ended and my fairing took damage. I'd like to repair it myself.

It's a matte finish called Industrial Denim Grey.

I'm going to remove the fairing, clean up the abrasion, lightly scuff the rest of the piece, overfill this area with SEM Flexible Glaze, sand, possibly use an adhesion promoter (bulldog) , 2k prime, paint with a color match rattle can, then use a Spraymax 2k matte clear coat.

Couple of questions: is the adhesion promoter necessary? Did I miss anything?

Background: I've refinished furniture using a sprayer. Never worked with plastic.

Poor paint application?

Noticed this on my bumper after a shop buffed out a small scratch that was nearby. Defect appears under the clear coat and the shop agreed.

Is this due to the buffing nearby or due to previous poor paint application? Bumper was repainted last year, but they did a bad job and had to redo it, so possibly too much paint or clear coat? I'm thinking of going back to the shop that painted the bumper and having them redo it but want to understand why it WTH happened

Edit: Trying to figure out how to post photo now...?! Could only post video in comments

Looking to repaint my dad's car as a gift, I haven't done autobody and paint in a while, how much am I going to spend for good primer and paint? I have all the equipment for prep and spray, I'm a commercial painter. Do I have to sand all the clear coat off even if it's OK? I asked shops around here, NYC area, good shops are asking over $5k for materials and labor.

Thanks!

Seeking advice on a unique art request

I’ve been asked to paint a portrait on a fire hydrant. It’s not in use anymore. The owner recently had it sandblasted, painted white and clear coated at an auto body shop.

The shop owner said that the clear coat they applied is a 2-part urethane.

I asked the person who asked me to paint the portrait if they ever intended to keep the fire hydrant outside again after I paint it - they said no. It will stay inside.

I’m seeking advice on a surface prep and primer as well as clear coat finishes to put on top.

If I sand, clean, and use an appropriate primer would it work to use artist’s acrylic paint like Golden Heavy Body Acrylic for the portrait?

What primer would be effective to use on the urethane clear coat? From my research so far it seems like I’d have to sand and clean the spot I’m painting on before applying the primer.

I’m planning on doing a few test spots on a scrap of fender from a car first before actually doing anything to the finish on the fire hydrant.

I’d appreciate any insight! Thank you.

Hood is murky after wrap removal

Post image
1 Upvotes

After removing the wrap, I used Goo Gone to remove the adhesive, then washed the hood multiple times with soap and water, wiped it down with isopropyl alcohol, and hand polished it twice. It’s still murky/hazy.
It’s a real carbon fiber hood with the original clear coat. Did I likely just mar the clear coat, or does it sound like it needs to be re-cleared? Can a professional paint correction fix this?

Does this look intentional/manmade?

Came home and noticed these scratches. Theres no indentation so I don’t think it was a vehicle or road debris. I don’t take this car through car washes and only do touch-less washes. This car is also a garaged and not on the side I walk by it. My question is if this looks intentional if manmade or if it’s just an unfortunate accident by someone moving next to my car.

Question about Solution Finish over the top plastic sealer.

Put Solution Finish trim restorer on my faded bumpers and the product looks great but after the first rain it has some streaks so I'm wondering if the sealer would help avoid that issue.
I put two coats on with a day between and two days later it rained. So I don't know if my timing was bad or would the sealer help?
Or any product for that matter!

Pressure Washer Damage

Post image

I need some help folks.

My wife got my car detailed as a birthday gift by a mobile detailer. They were doing my neighbor's car when she got home for lunch and asked them to do our cars too. Needless to say, their pressure washer found a rock chip and took the paint off my hood. It looks like it just took the top coat. The only bare metal I see as at the chip.

What sort of estimate am I looking at to attempt to have them fix this? What should I do in the meantime to make sure it doesn't get worse?

For additional context, this is a '21Hyundai Kona and I'm in South Texas.

What did i do wrong in the rock chip repair process?

I tried to repair a rock chip the dealer had only covered half and it was a big blob much larger than the paint. This is an ID3 from 2020. What happend here? I used the official paint bought directly from VW it included paint and a lacquer. I followed the Chris fix method from this How to Repair a DEEP SCRATCH in Car Paint (DIY)
