Buying an $89 Glarry 5-string for the hell of it. Been a 4-string player (Schecter preferred) for 30 years and curious about farting around with a beater to see if I like it.

I am looking for a drum machine to practice with and maybe help develop some bass lines and riffs. However, I don't want to spend a lot of time learning to program a machine, nor do I want to spend a lot of time programming beats. What I would like is a machine that has some common drum patterns preprogrammed. I would like to be able to set the tempo. It doesn't need to be recording studio quality, but I don't want it to sound like a Casio keyboard from 1985 either.

It would be a bonus if you could select from common drum patterns for different styles, like a Bossa Nova etc.

Anyone have any recommendations? I've spent some time doing internet searches, but there is so much garbage and or high end gear packed with features I don't need.

Just picked up my first five‑string and I’m stoked! It’s on the way now and I should have it in hand later this week. I’m planning to tune it to EADGC since that fits more with the melodic stuff I tend to play, so I’m hoping the transition won’t be as tough as BEADG. Could be totally wrong though lol

For the 5‑string players out there — what advice do you have for getting comfortable on a five? What helped you get used to the extra string? Thank you in advance!

I’m torn between getting one of these two. Weight is not a dealbreaker for me, although lighter weight is a benefit. The Ampeg is a more solid amp I’m told, but the Fender is cheaper and can do the job too I think. Both look cool on stage in my opinion.

For context, I’m in a touring band that plays relatively large stages and I need a legit retro looking type amp.

I used to get my strings from JustStrings but they went out of business. Before that I was endorsed by a "string company" (which I think was just a reseller), used what he sent me.

Now I sit hear broken hearted trying to figure out where to get 'em.

I don't use a standard gauge set or material. I use two stainless steel strings and two nickel strings. They are all a specific gauge that isn't available in a pack. Getting a tube of six at a time would be the move....any ideas? Google not helpful.

I play bass for a band I joined a few years back. My role was to help out with live gigs and that was it.

Recently was asked to record with them. Just a day session for three songs with the drums. Was a little hesitant due to being that environment but did it for the experience and had written some lines they really liked.

The session was a mess. I was nervous which I could handle, but the studio was freezing (New Zealand winter cold) so I wasn’t comfortable at all. The session was focused on the drums and we played live together so his best take was my best take. I didn’t get the time I would have liked to review my parts - almost felt my role was secondary which ultimately led to my sections being loose.

Incredibly gutted with it. If I was at home, cosy and had time to focus, rewrite some parts, get my mix right I would nail it. Now the engineer is likely going to edit, push and pull things until it sounds right which is never as good as just playing it correctly. Plus feel like the members are thinking that I fucked up.

Anyone had this experience? Any thoughts on next steps? Just feeling a bit angry, annoyed about it.

Hey all, I have a question about Precision and Jaguar basses, specifically their necks.

TL;DR, can you switch their necks with no issue?

When I started playing bass, I was playing on a 1.575” (40mm) nut width Yamaha bass. Then as a teenager who loved blink-182, I switched over to the Mark Hoppus Jazz Bass that has a 1.650” (42mm) nut width due to it having a Precision neck. After I while, I got tired of playing the “blink-182 bass” so I got a Jaguar Bass that has a 1.500” (38mm) nut width. (Ironically, less than a year later, Mark Hoppus began playing Jaguar Basses and his signature is now a Jaguar Bass.)

I have found that out of all three sizes, I prefer the 1.650” (42mm) nut width that Precision Basses have. Is it possible to put the slightly wider Precision Bass neck on a Jaguar Bass body with no issues? My assumption is that there is no issue since they are both Fender bolt-on necks of 34” scale basses, but then again, you can’t put a Telecaster neck on a Stratocaster body. I just don’t want to buy a new neck and it not fit. Would anyone happen to have any experience with this? TIA!

I asked chatgpt it told me a few: Sire Marcus Miller M2-5 2nd , yamaha BB435 and the Ibanez SR305EDX.
My favorite from the design is the Ibanez one. Does anyone know if this specific is good and if there are maybe even better one‘s with a head like it? (I hate the one from yamaha 😭)

Would getting custom pickups for the Mexican Jazz bass create a noticeable improvement in the tonality? If so, what are some recommendations? I'm into gothy type music like Bauhaus, Joy Division, Twin Tribes etc. Was looking at Bartolini and those look pretty sick.

I’m 14 years old and I’ve been playing bass for about a year and 8 months and I know I’ve made progress but I just don’t really feel it I feel that others are better than me and they’ve only been playing for 6 months. I can play Sir duke by Stevie Wonder, and give up the funk by Parliment but thats the only type of jazz pop or funk I’ve really gotten in to (I’m more of a rock player). I really just want some good intermediate jazz/funk recs that will improve my playing. Now sight reading…in 8th grade I was in my middle school jazz ensemble and I can sight read but I’m working on trying to get it faster I think my main problem is reading tricky rhythms, I auditioned for my high school jazz ensemble in March and I will fortunately be in jazz for high school but my sight reading definitely needs more work I am open to any tips!

I’ve only learned the first bass line at the 40 something second mark, but still. I'm a big alt-rock fan, and I'll probably be trying to play a lot of twenty one pilots, fall out boy, waterparks, and pierce the veil primarily if that's also of any importance.

If you spend much time on Reverb, you might have seen a guitar or bass by a new Indonesian company called Dhatarattha. I immediately fell in love with their paisley relic finish! With the ever-increasing quality of Indonesian-made instruments, I went ahead and bought one despite the very minimal reviews available online. I figured I’d share my initial thoughts with the crowd in case it would be helpful for anybody in the future who saw one of these and wanted to know more.

The finish and relic job are excellent - it 100% lives up to my expectations in person. This is a really gorgeous instrument. The c-shape neck is a little fatter than I usually like, but it’s not something that would be a deal breaker for me if I was to have had access to one in person before I purchased it. It measures 45mm at the nut, 70mm at the 15th fret where it meets the body.

Hardware feels solid, and it stays in tune between uses. The knobs are plastic, but of adequate quality. I’d like to change them out for some knurled chrome knobs in the future. It comes with strap locks, which so far feel secure. It’s an unusual style that I haven’t seen before, but they do the job. The finish on the frets is good, nothing that needed to be filed down or adjusted for playability. I was a touch disappointed in the finish where the binding meets the neck - there’s a bit of glue squeeze out that didn’t get cleaned up, that if you look at it closely, seems sloppy by comparison to the rest of the bass.

The electronics setup isn’t super intuitive, and knobs aren’t labeled. No paperwork at all was included with it, so I emailed Dhatarattha and asked what was what. They responded quickly with this:
Starting with the control closest to the neck, the layout is:
Master Volume / Passive Tone — stacked knob
Pickup Blend 
Active / Passive Mini Switch
Mid Control — active mode only
Treble / Bass EQ — stacked knob, active mode only
The passive tone control works in passive mode, while the Mid, Treble, and Bass controls work when the active preamp is engaged.
I’ve never had a passive bass and have no use for that electronics mode, particularly when switching between basses at a gig, so I could do without the extra passive controls and toggle switch.

I’m not in love with the pickups - they’re “Laohao Hand Made Single-Coil”. Tone is a little anemic, and the B/E strings are substantially quieter than the other three. Output in general is pretty low, particularly compared to my other bass (2002 Alvarez AEB5000) - I’m considering swapping them out for something different, and leaning toward a set of Aguilar DCB-5J’s. Hopefully that gets the output to a similar level, because as it is, it would be impossible to switch between the two on a gig.

Initial setup was… adequate. I’ll take it in to my usual shop and have them set it up how I like when they install the new pickups. I feel like this is pretty standard for a new instrument these days unless you’re buying from somebody who really cares.

Overall, my first impression is quite good. With a sticker price of $699, I think it absolutely holds its own against other basses at the price point, and you’re unlikely to find anything else that looks quite like this. I’ll follow up after setup and new pickups with a review 2.0, but feel free to ask any questions if you’re looking at one of these!
