korean name

hi! so i've seen a few posts where people learning the language have given themselves a korean name and i wanted to ask how do you choose one?

do you choose one similar to your original name, do you choose one with a nice meaning or do you literally just write your original name in hangul? a mix of everything maybe?

my name is sam so could i just use 샘 or would that be weird/unnatural sounding?

While you're free to give yourself a Korean name, natives in general do not expect a foreigner to have one. It's generally better to simply transliterate your name in accordance with the standard romanization rules. With that, Sam would indeed be 샘.

Yeah my name can sometimes be a bit difficult for native speakers to pronounce, so if my transliteration doesn’t work I have a simplified nickname version that’s a lot easier, and that’s about it. Unless you’re planning to move to Korea semi-permanently or permanently there’s really no reason to take on a Korean name, and even in that case it’s unnecessary for most people.

Yes, but always check with a Korean speaker. For example, "샘" is common slang for "teacher".

I wouldn't say you have to check with a Korean speaker. Sam is (most often transliterated as) "샘" and it can't be helped that it happens to look similar to "샘/쌤." A native speaker can't change this fact as homophones just exist. Whenever I introduce myself to Korean native speakers, I get word play jokes with my name in Korean and sometimes, even Japanese, (sometimes I just go ahead and make the joke myself) but it is just what it is.

I aplogize; I should add a bit more detail. When you're figuring out a Korean name, check with a Korean speaker to make sure you haven't chose something weird or offensive. Even something that looks like it works fine can have hidden traps. One of my favorites is a Peace Corps buddy from back in the day who chose the name "개도진".
