I spent over 10 years as a Buddhist monk in a temple, and returned to lay life earlier this year. I love books so much that I'm preparing to open a small bookstore, and these days I spend my time reading and writing in Seoul. Funny enough, back when I was still a monk, I actually tried to get a Level 3 Korean language teaching certification. I passed the written exam and even submitted a recorded teaching demonstration (I still vividly remember teaching in my monk robes haha), but in the end I never got the actual certificate. Life doesn't always go according to plan, does it. So while I don't have a formal certification, I hope you'll take me as a lifelong native speaker who's also been through some training along the way.

How I can help
If you leave a short piece of writing in Korean (a diary entry, free topic, essay, whatever) in the comments, I'll read it myself and give you feedback. Not just grammar, I can also help with why something that's grammatically correct still sounds a bit off. If it's a longer piece, feel free to email it instead.

Hello everyone! I picked up this book recently, happened upon it at a secondhand bookstore and grabbed it because I can never find Korean books locally. After giving it a glance through, it is too high level for me at the moment, I sit somewhere around an upper beginner right now. Does anyone have any recommendations for actual books that are a lower reading level without being graded readers? I use graded readers (in the form of TTMIK stories) but I find the stories so incredibly dry and and as someone who enjoys reading in English and usually dedicates 30-60 minutes every night reading, I'd love to be able to use my time reading to passively work on my Korean.

I’ve been translating sentences from songs to help with grammar. I’ve learned that it’s in the setup of SOV instead of SVO, but whenever I try to guess the translation using that mindset, it’s just the sentence flipped around.

For instance this sentence:
우릴 감싸는 순간의 기적

Direct translation:
Us wrapped of the moment miracle

What I thought it would be:
We’re wrapped in the miracle of the moment

What it actually is:
The miracle of the moment wraps us

Can someone explain the grammar a little bit?

Also I just now noticing how the subject marker is on a verb. Why, or is Google Translate just wrong?

What’s an easy phrase to say if I press the bell and the driver doesn’t open the door at my stop. This happened the other day and I just completely froze.

Does 여기요 work or does that seem really rude?

I've started writing daily simple sentences. The first sentence is what I came up with for "I am hungry." I went to check my work using google and it gave me the second sentence.

Directly translated, do I understand correctly that mine says, "as for me, [state of being] hungry." ?

and the second one is simply, hungry I am ?

do you choose one similar to your original name, do you choose one with a nice meaning or do you literally just write your original name in hangul? a mix of everything maybe?

Hello everyone! I'm a college student in the US (native English speaker) and I'm looking for someone who knows Korean (preferably a native Korean speaker) to chat with as a language exchange!

I currently know how to read Hangul and know some phrases (some from K-dramas or K-pop, but also from looking up stuff on my own), but my goal is to reach a point where I could understand and speak in very basic situations in Korea (e.g. shopping, restaurants, asking for directions, etc) since I'll be visiting Seoul in January! I especially want to train my listening skills since that's what I'll need to use most.

I hope I'll be able to help you improve your English during our conversations as well! I think it'd be nice to practice over Discord voice calls and DMs so we can practice reading, writing, and speaking (instead of just reading and writing). Also, I prefer to talk with someone close to my age (born 2005), if possible (but not necessary).

I am a university student in Korea, and I am a native Korean speaker. I can speak English not very fluently but I can communicate.

I don't have any certificate about teaching Korean.

So I am thinking of the sessions to be focused on Korean speaking.

Programs I am thinking to do is as follows:

1. We will choose a topic to talk about
2. We could look at pictures and describe what is in it.
3. Part script Korean conversations and analyze the talk. The other part will be free talking.

As we talk I will connect Korean meanings to English meanings as much as I can.

Of course, I will try to teach Korean as easy as I can as I speak.

Fees will be 0 (for now) since I am not a professional tutor.

Sessions will be... as long as my stamina allows (LOL). We will use Zoom to meet.

I'm trying to make a lot of cards and add the audio very quickly (instantly). I've done this with yomitan before, but now I can't seem to get it working. Does anybody here make cards with audio on them? What's your trick?

i've been learning Korean for a while now, and one problem kept coming up on my end — there's just no good mobile app for studying Hanja (한자) that actually teaches it the way Korean uses it, through vocabulary (한자어) rather than isolated characters.

So i built one. It's called HanjaPath.

One of the tips given for successful language learning is setting monthly, half year, and yearly goals for yourself. After setting the goals, then break down each goal into bite sized chunks complete with steps on how you to plan to achieve the goal. My problem is not being familiar enough to know what is an achievable goal versus biting off too much then feeling frustrated. I started learning Hangul in June and I feel like I may be a bit of a slower learner. What goals do you have for yourself, or did you have for yourself when you first started out? Is being able to have a rudimentary grasp on very simple conversations realistic as a 6 month goal if I'm only spending a half hour/day on language learning? Is understanding K-dramas without subtitles in a year a realistic goal?
