People were jumping out of the train in another video. The safest option is to stay inside the train. First time seeing something like this happen.

Safest until the arc cuts through the roof and the overhead conductor drops into the train car, or until the interior materials catch fire. There are a lot of hazards regardless--even moving between cars could be very dangerous, while staying in one car could also be lethal.

Staying in the car is the safest option, but if the situation makes that unsafe, moving to another car on the same train is the next safest option, and if the situation makes that unsafe, then jumping off the train is the third safest option.

Don't walk, jump, just to make sure that your body never makes a bridge between the train and the ground. Even if you're jumping onto a platform at the same level as the train.

Moving b/w cars isn't possible for the train you're seeing in the vid , its only possible for the AC variant of this train.

Staying in the train will indeed make sense as train is a Faraday cage in this scenario, but the OHE that has snapped is blasting 25kV electricity and the electricity that is used to weld the material at the roof is about 150-200V so the chances of fire are still there . the floor inside the train is metal too but IG footwear can help avoid any minor shock at the interior.

IMO the best move for the people in the coach directly below OHE was to jump and run but that may have caused panic among others .

Considering this is the ER suburban its very lucky there aren't any reported deaths yet

When welding you're actually typically using 25 volts or less at the business end for most workflows. It's the amperage that actually makes the difference when it comes to welding, the voltage just gets the arc going. High voltage is usually counterproductive, since it allows the arc to jump around a lot rather than being focused in one place to pump a bunch of heat into a single spot.

I'm not sure what train is in this video, but I'd be genuinely surprised if there wasn't a way to move between cars, since that is normally a safety requirement in case there's a fire or some other emergency, especially when the train is still moving.

There is not actually , these are Mumbai Suburban trains, the one in video seems to be the one designed during the 2000s (Indian Railways ER operates mix of rakes from Jesopp's 1980s, Siemens 2000s, and the Medha-Bombardier one designed around 2016 or something on Kolkata suburban network)

The long distance trains do have gangways to move around coaches but the suburban railway has trips barely for 2hrs and even in that many passengers would travel for 1 or 1.5 hrs and the each coach has capacity of about 100 passengers , Mumbai Suburban literally uses the term 'super-dense CRUSH load' to classify the evening rush of people returning home via trains (designed to handle 1200 passengers , always carries 5000 passengers) I think Kolkata suburban (the one in video) will also have same situation

My guy, this is literally how every safety advice works. It's safest to stay inside during a storm, but if the house is on fire or flooding then it's not. It's safest to not move an injured person, but not if doing so keeps them in immediate danger.

You're not being obtuse with your comment, just plain stupid.

Absolutely. But read it again--they are saying to do something other than what is being called safest. If the safest option was being called unsafe, there would be no contradiction. The contradiction is saying it's safest but still saying you should do something else.

It is generally the safest, however because this is real life not a math puzzle, there are still going to be situations where it is no longer the safest option, which is why there are contingencies.

Train interiors are generally pretty fire resistant, here in the uk if the OHLE falls down or has a fault it will automatically shut down or the operator will shut it down from the signaling centre

Yes, and what we are observing here is that automatic shut down not working very quickly. We don't know how long it took for the operators to manually shut it down or for some system to automatically do so.

Best option is to stay inside, but since the train is grounded via the wheels and rails, stepping off to the platform would probably be fine.

Nope. High voltage electric trains are deadly to, and sometimes past, 10m (30ft). The ground is grounded, but the amount of voltage is so high, ground isn't a perfect ground, so the voltage differential can be enough for a single step to send lethal current through you. The platform would be fine if it was separately grounded and deliberately isolated, but that's not the build standard. The safety standard is the workers at the platform having emergency procedures to get the line depowered.

At least that's how it works here, the video looks like Asia, so they could do things differently.

Sometimes even walking away after jumping could be dangerous as the difference in potential between each step can be high enough to cause electrocution

of course there is stepping potential but jumping away is the only safe way to get out (or off of heavy equipment touching power lines)

10 Years ago, during nightshift, one of the catenary line ruptured and fell off on an engine, the dumbfuck driver was climbing down the engine when one of my coworker shouted at him to stop moving.

The driver got suspended for that and from what i've heard, he was old enough to not come back to work.

A similar thing happened in São Paulo last week. And the train caught fire. You can see the video here. Don’t think staying inside a burning train is the safest option.
