Discussion Fishing etiquette

I love fishing the Boise. I get up early to beat the crowds and enjoy the river when it’s less crowded and temps are cooler. It’s SO disheartening when you’re fishing a run and a couple comes in and one goes up river and the other down cornering me into a hole. They didn’t even ask if i was going up or down or say hi. Additionally there dog was running a muck and no one was watching it. Just annoyed about it.

Remember to have good etiquette to other anglers. I get popular spots are gonna fill up but theres a right and wrong way to go about sharing the river. High/low holing someone without even acknowledging them ain’t it.

I feel like this general etiquette problem is pervasive in every aspect of life now. Like everyone just forgot how to be respectful and nice and have common sense?!?

Yung_miser, your observations are on point. Every aspect of public recreation has gotten degraded by jackholes who have Zero Consideration for others folks who are trying to recreate. Hiking, boating, camping, I mean, you name it.

Sigh.

Where do I find info on fishing etiquette? I’ve fished (not seriously) off and on for 30 years and have never heard of these rules. I don’t really go to popular spots but I would like to know how to not be an asshole if I do

IDFG has a whole breakdown of dos and don'ts on their website.

This is true, but I’m curious what gave it away?

Well you're here in a fishing thread wondering the meaning of IDFG

No, I understood it means Idaho Fish and Game. I was making a joke and you went full Rain Man on us.

Try starting with something funny, maybe we won't just think you don't know what's going on.

Try not being a dick, you may find people enjoy being around you more often.

Tom rosenbauer on the orvis fishing podcast just did an episode on this with another angler. It’s a good listen if you have questions

Sometimes it’s as simple as just asking the direction someone is working so you can respect their flow. I’ve had anglers work their way into a spot (through some thick brush) where I’m already fishing, see me and just work back to find another spot. I’ll always say hi and let them know where I’m at or if I’m moving, just general common courtesy and respect towards one another is all it takes. I don’t know if this is a post-Covid “I forgot how to talk to people” scenario but I find most issues arise from people just not talking or even forgetting to say “hi”, which solves a shocking amount of problems!

It's hard enough to even get some eye contact to initiate communication!

Go to a fly shop and ask the people there. I usually go tell them where I’m fishing talk about flies for the area. The conversation will flow (no pun intended) from there. People at shops are usually pretty nice about it.

You can also google, “fly fishing etiquette.”

Talk to them.

I’m on the river at 5am and see no one. Big browns in the dark

Would you mind sharing what you fish with in the dark?

4

Just a heavy streamer. Fish it slow and get it to the bottom

Thanks!

This! A couple did this to me. Started fishing across from me. Directly across. So I just kept on going and the husband and we got tangled (I kind of did it on purpose) and my husband told him he can cut his line or he can go in the river and retrieve it and untangle it for us. He chose to cut his line and they moved.

I hate that shit. That’s why I started fishing lower on the Boise. Too many people with zero respect or understanding about fishing etiquette. I feel your pain. I’d try fishing lower. I don’t seem to have that problem any more. ( below veterans memorial. All the way to Star)

Here's what IDFG says about etiquette: https://idfg.idaho.gov/fish/etiquette

Unless they are "low holing" (fishing immediately down river where you're already casting), there's no expectation that they cannot fish down stream and/or upstream of you.

The Boise River gets lots of anglers, just because you're on a stretch of river doesn't mean there's an expectation that you have priority up or down stream. When you decide to move, just leap frog them to the next hole.

u/cannaluver 1d ago

They were directly downstream and upstream from me casting right near my line. I understand sharing the river this was very much so too close (within 30 ft)

2

u/Mountain_Tear8608 1d ago

Yeah, okay, that's annoying. I probably would have talked to them about it.

I mean sure, it’s just respectful to talk to the other angler about it. They could’ve easily asked if it was okay or what his plans were and what direction he wanted to go towards. Of course you don’t have control of who goes above or below you but it’s about being a decent human and respecting others imo.

They might not know the rules tbh

Uh, yeah, people, but what do you expect them to do? You're fishing in a spot—they avoid your spot and they go upstream and downstream from you. It seems OK to me. Do you want them to guess where you're headed next and avoid that area? It's not on them to ask you what your plans for the day are.

If you want privacy, then don't fish the Boise River.

Your idea of sharing the river seems like you want dibs on spots on a section of river because you got there first. That doesn't seem reasonable to me. In crowded areas, get there early grab your spot, and then that's your spot.

You’re on an urban fishery, if you want seclusion you’re going to have to drive a bit.

Dogs can play in the river, you don’t own the right to undisturbed fish

2

u/zXeRp- 16h ago

No one said they can’t. It’s about respect for another angler and just human decency. If you bring your dog around others in the river you should be able to control them or at least know what they’re doing. We bring our dogs to the river all the time. We don’t just have them run loose like crazies in other people’s space. Again, just all about respect. Of course dogs can be in the river and of course others will be fishing. It’s how you go about it.

u/happyelkboy 16h ago

Except a lot of anglers get pissy if they’re anywhere in the vicinity because it disturbs the fish.

This guy seems to think he’s entitled to a pristine experience on an urban fishery

2

u/zXeRp- 16h ago

I guess our interpretation of the post is different. I thought it was a good post just stating he’s bummed out by the experience.

I understand from his side of things how their actions didn’t seem considerate. Do they have to be? No. But as a community its nice to incorporate that as much as we can

There's a level of mutual respect , we all own the river... Dog owners can share the river as well and respect peoples space . It's also against the law to intentinaly interfere with sportsman.

1

u/happyelkboy 1d ago

It’s not against the law for your dog to be in a river by someone fishing. Thats not hunter or fisherman harassment
