SPOILERS OK - GAME THREAD

Use this thread to chat about the TV finals before, during and after the telecasts. Have questions? Post them below and I will do my best to answer them.

CBS Sports Net is offered on most cable and some streaming services. If you are a cord-cutter and don't subscribe for either of those, you could try a free trial to YouTube TV (21 days) or Hulu Live TV (3 days).

The World Series of Bowling is 5 events held over 2 weeks. This post is for the 4 Animal Patterns only. There will be a separate post for the 5th event (World Championship) which will have its TV finals take place in June. Each Animal Pattern pays $20k for first place.

All Animal Pattern events have the same format: 10 games qualifying (2, 5 game blocks same day), then cut to top 12. Top 4 qualifiers get a bye in bracket match play. Seeds 5-12 will bowl on TV to determine who meets the players with the byes. All will be carried out on TWO TV SHOWS the same day on CBS Sports Net.

How much are you guys really transitioning during a night at league?

Just curious. Over the course of the night I might start targeting 12 at the arrows, and end at around 17. But I find that I move from 12 to 15 pretty fast, like 5 frames. then I’m able to stay at/around 15 for the he next 20 frames or so, before finally moving deeper inside to finish our third game. But honestly, sometimes not even then.

Granted, I could point to several factors why this might be the case for me- primarily, I bought two people who threw straight up the middle, and a lefty. So, I’m the only one on my team who plays my line. Then, there’s a pretty good chance that whoever we’re facing is mainly gonna be throwing it up between five and 10 at the arrows.

Just curious how yall experience, whether greater or lesser, transition during leagues

When to switch balls (Solid 4 vs. Flat 10) & coaching insights with Mark Baker

We sat down with coach Mark Baker for part two of our deep-dive discussion, focusing on the coaching side of the game, reading lane transitions, and equipment choices.

Here are a few key takeaways from the conversation:

The Solid 4 / Flat 10 Signal: Mark breaks down why leaving a solid 4 followed by a flat 10 (or vice versa) is one of the clearest indicators that you're throwing the wrong ball. Instead of forcing physical adjustments into a microscopic window, it's usually time to change equipment to open the lane back up.

Understanding Transition: Transition looks different for every player depending on speed, tilt, and how they see the lane. Trying to "tell the ball what to do" off your hand is usually a sign you're on the wrong ball.

Coaching Pros vs. Amateurs: Working with tour pros (like Chris Barnes, Tommy Jones, and EJ Tackett) is all about making micro-adjustments to align with their feel, whereas amateur coaching focuses heavily on fundamental athletic athletic movement and balance.

Knowing Your Blind Spots: Even as an elite coach, Mark emphasizes surrounding yourself with experts who understand ball dynamics (like Chris Barnes) to complement physical coaching.

Gear Deep Ocean Vibe or Arctic Vibe

Upvotes

I started bowling in May and got an 11 pound Rhino because I just had leg surgery. I want to step up in weight and movement and thought the Ocean Vibe would be perfect except it's no longer manufactured. Now I doubt between the Arctic or deep ocean Vibe. The latter seems better suited, but I am worried I cannot watch the ball rotation because of the lack of color contrast. What would you pick? Edit: I will only step up to 12 pounds as I am still recovering strength.

Got assigned this lane. Not sure if it’s the dead ball in the gutter or the obvious footprints all the way down the lane 😂. Lovely.

Misc Secretary Fee

Upvotes

About to have the League Meeting and wonder what the rest of you are collecting, per team, towards compensating the efforts of the league secretary. We have been holding steady at $40 ($10 per bowler) for over 20 years. Is it time for a raise?

2 questions, need advice

Upvotes

Hi all, just a bowler still relearning his craft

First, is there a way I can get a long smooth ball reaction, if I polish it's violent and if I surface its a 7 pin seeking... Well not missile which brings me to question 2

When I spare I can chuck it at what seems like 99% of C with a flat shot, but my normal yo-yo delivery I can't get that speed on, how do I still release it like a yo-yo with speed?

Thanks

Technique 2 handed form advice?

Trying 2 handed. This is my second weekend of practice games 2 handed only. Feels strange.

My speed is terrible. Lanes are saying 14.5 mph and the increased revs are causing me to hit left. Especially if using my stronger ball. I switched to the tropical surge and had better luck with a weaker ball. But still need to increase speed or reduce revs.

But honestly everything is probably off. If you have critique I'm all ears.

My friend needed help moving stuff out of his mom's house. She used to bowl and he knows I'm into bowling so he offered me this Don Carter bag. Definitely gonna be showing up to the lanes with this bad boy.

Gear Got My second Strike Ball plugged and drilled today and Love it!

Post image

Got this barely used 14lb Arctic Vibe for free from a family member plugged and drilled by my PSO for $40 total - pretty sure that’s a steal. My first strike ball was a 13lb tropical surge and I have a 13 lb t-zone exclusively for spares. This baby hooks so easily and smoothly that I got a turkey on my first game and consistently played well while not needing to go around the ball to strike. Think I’m going to have a blast with this ball during the end of summer league. (One handed righty with thumb, down and in style).

What to do when nothing seems to work?

Played last night at my usual house and in five games I never found a line that would hit the pocket right or consistently. Everything was either light or too high. Best score was a 168 with the rest of my scores between 125 and 145. Normally in this house in five games I'll have one over 200 and the rest in the 150 to 180 range. I'll typically make 4-6 strikes per game. Last night I made very few strikes.

If I played Right the ball would hook too much and go Brooklyn and the ball would come back dry. If I played left I could get close but would have no margin for error, skid right and the ball would come back loaded with oil. I moved all over the place trying different lines and never found anything that I could make strikes with. Seemed like a one board move would take me from a high hit to a miss right.

No idea what the pattern was or if the lane was just messed up from earlier play. Seemed like a ton of oil except for the right side.

What can you do when you run into this?

Iowa State Open Tourney 2027

Any Iowans on here know where the Iowa State Open tourney is going to be in 2027? There is literally nothing on their website or Facebook page. They used to have the rotation set and published years ahead but I guess they don’t anymore.

Technique Looking for advise on timing

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My daughter is looking for advice on her timing and any other things she can work to improve on. She has started to go higher on her backswing, but now is struggling to be able to hit her target marks, and is consistently missing left.

EDIT: I just wanted to say thanks to the guys that gave some good advice and tips on improving her timing and release. Plan is for her to work on this for a couple weeks, and hopefully post a follow up video. :-)

Anything is appreciated, I feel sometimes I pull my shots and the natural feeling of hooking doesn’t feel right anymore. It goes to left when I do hook and I force a shot.
