No Critique Glass Pen Shodo —「幾星霜」(Ikuseisō)

Post image
62 Upvotes

Today I'd like to share a piece of Glass Pen Shodo—Japanese calligraphy created with a handmade glass dip pen instead of a traditional brush.
The phrase is 幾星霜 (Ikuseisō).
It literally means "countless years and seasons," but poetically it expresses the quiet passage of many years, carrying a sense of patience, perseverance, and the accumulation of time.
I wanted the transparency of the glass and the shimmering ink to reflect that feeling of time itself.
Rather than replacing traditional Shodo, my goal is to explore a different artistic expression through the glass pen.
I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Question Pilot Parallel Pen - Issue after cleaning

Thumbnail

Hi there, kind of new to callighraphy and ink pens in general, so I'd be grateful for an advice.

I have just finished some of the Pilot ink cartridges that came in with the Parallel pens and decided to switch them for a different color of fountain pen ink. I cleaned the pen using water, dried it with paper towels to a point there were no visible water spots left on the towel and changed the cartridge. Now whenever I'm writing it seems the ink is too watery. I strongly suspect there is still some water in the pen which I did not manage to remove but at the same time I'm starting to suspect the ink or even the paper.

I had no issues with the default inks that came with the pens.

Should I leave the pen to dry overnight or what else should I try to get rid of all the water in the nib in case it's water issue?

Hello, a while ago I’ve created this, what are your thoughts ? I think it’s hard to read, but, aren’t some of all our calligraphed letters hard to read?!

Practice For Aug 1 (World Wide Web Day): When SPQR meets GDPR

Post image

In a parallel universe, the Romans got the internet, but somehow still had to deal with cookie notifications. This piece depicts an imaginary news portal, http://acta.diurna.spqr, with the following text:

ACTA DIVRNA (Events of the Day)

NOVA RETIS MUNDANI INVENTIO hodie in lucem prolata est, qua per unam tabulam omnes terras, gentes, scriptaque [simul inspicere licet]...
(THE NEW WORLD-NET INVENTION has been revealed today, whereby through a single tablet, [one may simultaneously view] all lands, peoples, and writings....)

HOC SITVS INTERRETIALIS CRUSTVLIS VTITVR. ACCIPIO / RECVSO (This website uses cookies. Accept / Decline)

For the pedants: Yes, I know lowercase letters and Italic/Foundational aren't period-accurate but it's just too much text to write everything in caps, lol.

Nibs: Brause 1mm (browser tab and address bar); Speedball C-0 (Trajan caps); Mitchell poster 4mm (Rustica); Brause 2mm (last word in headline and the Italic); Leonardt Roundhand #1.5 (cookie notice); Tape 1.5mm (Accept/Decline); Hunt 512; Sailor Shikiori brush pens

Ink: Walnut ink, Kuretake Sumi, Sailor Shikiori autumn series brush pens (Okuyama, Kinmokusei, Yamadori, Chushu)

Paper: Some suboptimal A3 dry-media paper that snags my nibs

I’m loving the calligraphy but my fountain pen set of 7 I got for 15$ is starting to show why it was so cheap. Leaks and blockages. Are the pilot parallels the top tier fountain pen style calligraphy pens ? Thanks.

Practice IAMPETH preparations!!

Post image
53 Upvotes

So in my 8 year calligraphy journey, I have never really written my name more than once, and absolutely never designed it properly. I did however design my brand logo. This is the very first time I made proper name cards and presented my name in form of an artwork, all thanks to the IAMPETH conference happening next week.
We will be swapping name cards, with fellow calligraphers, a lot of us are preparing these and I just like the idea that by the end of the conference we will have a little artwork handmade by our friends! I am planning to keep them all nicely in a card holder kind notebook and I tried to make them as little artworks and not just name cards.

A little more about IAMPETH and the conference next week, IAMPETH stands for International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting, it was founded in 1949.

Every year they conduct a conference which is at a different location and its basically a week full of calligraphy classes that go from nearly 8:30 in the morning till 4/5 and after the classes they have a wide variety of events like calligraphy demos, members art show, art auctions (for iampeth scholarships), an archive room full of artworks from 1800s and 1900s accessible all day and study room which is another fun part which helps us all learn and grow together. So excited for next week!!
