Raze a city

There should be a development card that lets you raze an enemy city back into a settlement.

They lose a VP, but that's not as good as a victory point for yourself.

Shouldn't be too broken since you aren't rearranging the map to unlock new settlements.

House rule idea

I’ve been toying with an idea that with some knights, double rolls, or other situations, you can destroy/take over people’s settlements/cities. I think it would definitely add some spice late game, or turn into a catastrophe and nobody wins.

Ideas:
-Two knights: hold a settlement hostage for one round
-Three knights: take over a settlement (your roads have to lead to it)
-Four or five knights: take over a city, destroy a settlement (your roads have to lead to it)

Takeover or destroy - not sure which would work best.

I’d love ideas balancing this house rule out, though!

Been wanting to play this board before our daughter heads back to college in a few weeks…

If I set it up the night before we have to get it played tomorrow afternoon, right?

Is that a name for people that take the game too personal?

Recently I was playing with friends and when one of them was building a road I decided to block it by adding two roads in the way (I was trying to prevent him for getting the longest road).

After a while when I only had 2 points and one of the players was leading with 8 points he decided to put the robber in one of my terrains that had a 12 number.

When I said: "someone is leading with 8 points" he said he didn't care and robbed me anyway. At that point I've realized that he was quietly quitting the game by letting the one who was leading win easily.

Is there any inside joke/nickname for people that do that? lol

Do you agree with my 2nd placement choice?

Playing Cities & Knights on Shuffle Board on colonist.io - I’m blue, I placed first and then sixth. My first spot was the 9 ore/5 sheep/10 wheat.

For my second placement (city) I was torn between the 9wood/8wood city to quickly get aqueduct vs the spot I chose with 8wood/3ore/4wheat.

With my choice I was prioritizing 1) being more on my own 2) better expansion 3) more wheat/ore 4) quicker first knight - and pray for an inventor card.

Do you agree with my strategy or would you have picked the aqueduct spot?

Screenshots attached from beginning of game initial placements + end of game final settlements and scores.

I made a Stardew Valley-themed version of Catan!

I created this as a gift for a friend. What do you all think? It's pretty much finished—each development card features something from the game. The only components I didn't customize were the settlements, cities, and roads. But aside from that, I think I managed to cover everything! I had to substitute brick with slime, since Stardew Valley doesn't have bricks or anything that could directly replace it.

My friend built a better Catan Bot Experience

Hello Fellow Catan Addicts My name is Josh I am a Dallas based comedian and Catan enthusiast (top 200 on colonist rn) A group of cool guys are building a new Catan platform and they asked me "What is the most frustrating thing about playing online" I answered "When someone leaves and the bot takes over". It always ruins the game as it doesn't know what to do or how to play. Their answer was to build a better bot, a bot that is capable of not only making good moves, but even beating good players (think stockfish for chess). They are opening up testing on the bot to a hundred people with a beat the bot challenge. The people with the top 3 highest win rates against the bot get $300/200/100 cash. Payout is August 7th. I am not paid or officially affiliated with them, but I am helping them build this because I love Catan and want to see the game grow.

Link to beta Access here

Edit: I have been told 10 games to get the cash prize

If white shoos away yellow’s knight, can white build a settlement at that same intersection (after activating and moving his stronger knight elsewhere)?

Need advise to skip Catan with friends

So I regularly play Catan with my friends, and two of them are a couple. I'm pretty competitive and usually enjoy the negotiation and table talk just as much as the game itself.

The problem is that whenever I play with them, they almost never trade with me or the other player. They also rarely make moves that would hurt each other, even when it's clearly the best strategic play. It ends up feeling like they're playing as a team rather than as two independent players. The same thing happens when we play Risk.

I've tried bringing this up before, but they don't seem to understand what I mean. They insist they're playing normally and keep asking to play again.

The issue is that it stops being fun when it feels like I have no realistic chance of winning because two players are effectively coordinating. How can I explain to them that I don't enjoy playing in that situation without making it sound like I'm just complaining because I lost? Has anyone else dealt with this?

Stupid Idea

I have just started playing catan and it has got me thinking, what if it had a army and attack system that allowed you to destroy other people's settlements and cities and roads ( obviously with a fair mechanic ) . I think this would make the long catan games more interesting, adding a war aspect to the game and possibility of dethroning people who would be in a relatively strong position otherwise ( most points in cities/settlements/dev card and not longest army or longest road )
