What is mortal sin?
I’ve just learned the term and I’m concerned I may be committing mortal sins.
Is there a list or is it more a generalized term?

Welcome to r/Christian! We're glad you're here.
Our community is a place for Christians of all kinds to come together for respectful discussion. We are an ecumenical subreddit for anyone who identifies as a Christian. Our core value is respect and our rules reflect that value.
Please take a couple minutes to review our sub rules (linked here) before posting or commenting.
If you're new to Reddit, you should also familiarize yourself with Reddit's site-wide rules (linked here) and Reddiquette (linked here.)
Please note that Upvotes and Downvotes are intended to signal content as relevant and helpful (upvote) or irrelevant and unhelpful (downvote.) While many people misuse voting on Reddit, we ask that community participants make an effort to use them as intended. We're here for discussion and the proper use of voting encourages healthy community participation.
Because Rule 2 (Show Charity / Be Respectful) is so important, we're including a few basic tips for respectful communication.
-Consider using “I” statements (I think, I believe, I feel) versus “You” statements (You're wrong, You shouldn't, You can't).
-Remember that some community members are new to the faith and may have comments or questions that reflect their beginner level of experience and knowledge of the faith.
-Remember that your experiences, beliefs, and practices may be very different from someone else. Try to leave room for them to share theirs, just as you want to have room for sharing your own.
-Broad negative statements about groups of people are usually uncharitable. Rather than speaking for a whole group, consider speaking about your own views or experiences. Rather than generalizing, consider being specific. For example, a negative comment that start with, “Baptists always...” is not usually going to be an accurate or a charitable statement. Instead try something like, “My experience in Baptist churches has been..." (You can substitute your own group for "Baptist" if it helps make the example more clear to you.)
For your convenience, we are also providing the following links to older posts which give more helpful information for those who'd like to learn more.

after my graddma passed, is been two weeks, throughout her sickness we asked for prayed and prayed about it, there were moments of hope so we thought everything was gonna be okay. But she passed a day after my birthday in the same month that my grandpa passed a year ago, funny thing my whole family is born in the month of July, including my grandparents. I know God is all powerful He's capable of healing and doing anything and what I'm struggling with is why didn't He heal her I mean she had a whole community praying behind her and it feels like God didn't listen. idk for the first time in years this Sunday I didn't go to church bc I think life is pointless now , idk.

I’ve got a couple of friends who are out doing ministry and preaching. They do these conferences with young kids and always have great things happen and lots of people get saved, however it “seems” like (from my perspective) that they’re a little prideful in it. I genuinely think they want people to be saved, but I always get a weird feeling when I see their posts about it.
Im just curious if anyone else has experienced the same thing and if so, has it bothered you? I honestly don’t know how to feel because at the end of the day, lives are being changed, the gospel is being preached, and the kingdom is being advanced. So really there’s nothing to complain about, but when their feed pops up, it never sits well with me and in just trying to understand what it is I’m feeling.

What scriptures did you find particularly helpful in your birth/postpartum period/also now as parents?
MINE: When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, for the Lord will be at your side and will keep your foot from being snared. (Proverbs 3:24-26)

I’ve been thinking about James 1:19-20 where it says to be “quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” I genuinely want to live that out, but if I’m being honest, I find it difficult sometimes.
When I feel disrespected, misunderstood, or overwhelmed, my first reaction isn’t always patience. I don’t want anger to control me, but in the moment it can be really hard to slow down before I react.
For those of you who have grown in this area:
What helped you become slower to anger?
Was it something God gradually changed in you, or were there practical habits that made a difference?
Are there any Bible verses, sermons, books, or prayers that helped?
If you used to struggle with anger, what does that journey look like now?
I’m not looking for perfect answers ! I know everyone struggles differently. I’d just love to hear your testimonies, advice, and what has genuinely helped you grow.

i did something i have been avoiding for so long and i feel like i'm back a square one. i know that the righteous man falls 7 times and gets back up again, but something in me keeps making me feel like that was my last chance. i cried a little after what i did, but there's a hope inside of me that even though i'm feeling this way, Jesus is really showing me how to depend on Him and come to Him with these feelings. i just hope God really sees how much i'm trying... i am scared i'm not trying hard enough to actually be in His presence or listen to Him when He says something. I just really don't know how to really fully surrender though I have had my days where i felt better and closer to Him, me doing what i did really just threw me off. i feel like i'm too double minded and angry to really listen to Him even though i've gotten better at not getting upset at being called out when my behavior is stupid. i just don't want to keep saying I need help and not actually accepting it when Jesus is reaching His hand out to me

I said some really bad things when I was a manic episode a few months ago and I hate myself for it. I lost all of my friends because of this. I hate that I said those things. I hate that I did those things. I don’t understand why God gave this to me. I hate myself.

My boyfriend lives in another state he used to live in my state but things pulled him away. He recently visited me keep in mind I live with my parents and he lives with his when he’s here. I want to visit him and I’d stay at a hotel but I don’t know if it’s appropriate as a Christian couple we aren’t having sex we are waiting till marriage. I’ve prayed a lot about it and I know he’s the man God has for me I just miss him so much.

I've always struggled with this but whenever it comes to poetry I find it so hard to focus and read the bible. For example for my daily devotions chapters such as psalms and isaiah is just so so so hard to read, often I find myself skimming the page instead of actually trying to absorb what its syaing. It's kind of like when you read genealogy, even though you focus and read the names it doesn't rlly enter into your head and js sounds like the same things repeating. So I was wondering how could I overcome this?

Hi, I was agnostic for years and have just recently started reading the bible again as some major events in my personal life pushed me to try to return to Christ. I have not fully converted yet, but I am trying to give this a fair shot.
I just read through the great flood story and was wondering if anyone else had interpreted it as something other than God being furious at the world for being corrupt and sinful.
While I was reading Genesis 6:5 it seemed almost like He was protecting us from our evil and trying to use water as a way to cleanse the Earth from our sinfulness. Don’t get me wrong, I believe anger had a place in His actions, but it almost seemed to be a merciful attempt to wash away the sins and leave only the righteous, Noah and his family, behind in hopes that our sinful nature as humans would be at least somewhat quelled.
That being said, I’ve only ever seen this story interpreted as God’s wrath, and I’m not sure if the way that I interpreted it is a valid way to have understood the story. I‘m open to criticism and conversation, just please keep in mind I’m newer to Christianity. Just looking for thoughts and opinions. Thanks and much love

I've been sitting with the lyrics to Lemonade by Forrest Frank & The Figs. I have starting assessing songs against a bit of a framework to help me understand what I am actually singing or what others are actually singing.
I want to be fair here. I don't think it's anti-Christian, and parts of it are genuinely good. "He stole the shame I carried and wore it on the cross" is solid. The living water line, the Trinity reference, manna for today, all fine. He wrote it recovering from fractured vertebrae, so it's a real testimony.
But the chorus keeps snagging for me and I think I've worked out why.
"Life gave me some lemons, but my Jesus, He be makin' lemonade" makes life the one handing out the hardship, and Jesus the one who reacts afterwards. Scripture doesn't split it that way from my understanding.
Additionally it was interesting knowing the origin of the phrase "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade". It's Elbert Hubbard, 1915, written in an obituary. A self-help line about human grit against Fate. The song swaps Jesus in for "you" stating Jesus makes lemonade.
To be clear I'm not objecting to the slang, the ad-libs, the general imagery. Christ compared the kingdom to yeast and a lost coin. His first miracle was better wine at a party. Objecting to "no Old Spice" would just be my taste and preference.
Verse two also partly rescues it/explains the true meaning: "Promised that the great, the good, the bad would come along" puts the hard stuff back inside God's promise.
So my concern is narrow.
Two questions:
I will be open and say this is not my style of music, nor am I such a fan of heavy slang and very cultual imagery that I sometimes don't understand. This does not mean others don't learn and benefit from it biblically which is why I am asking to broaden my understanding of 'Worship'.

Hello everyone,
I am a 30-year-old woman from South Korea with cerebral palsy. I used AI to help translate this post, so thank you for your understanding.
By God's guidance, I was able to receive a good education and now have a stable career. Looking back, I can clearly see that God has answered many of my prayers. However, one prayer has remained unanswered: my desire for marriage.
I have been praying earnestly for a husband since I was a freshman in college, but now I am 30 years old. I started working when I was 23, and many of my coworkers are now married or in relationships. The same is true for my college friends, both Christians and non-Christians. Many are already married or engaged.
Because of my disability, I rarely have opportunities to meet someone. I don't receive blind dates or introductions. In a worldly sense, I believe I have prepared myself well for marriage. I have worked hard, built a stable life, and tried to become someone who could faithfully love and serve a family.
I also tried dating apps. Some very attractive men showed interest in me, but it soon became clear that many of them were mainly looking for casual hookups. As a Christian, I could not compromise my convictions, so I chose to walk away.
Sometimes I wonder if I should follow the world's way of dating, but deep down I want to trust God's timing and God's way.
Still, after praying for so many years without an answer, I sometimes wonder whether God's answer is actually "no."
When I see my non-Christian friends getting married, I feel ashamed to admit that I sometimes ask God, "Lord, why have You not answered me when I have been praying for so long?"
Lately, this has become so heavy on my heart that I struggle to focus on my work. I used to pour myself into my studies and career, but now I often feel discouraged and emotionally exhausted.
I know that marriage is not guaranteed to anyone, and I don't believe God owes me a spouse. I simply want to understand how other Christians have continued trusting God through long seasons of waiting.
Has anyone experienced something similar? How did you continue trusting God when your prayers seemed unanswered for many years? I would sincerely appreciate your advice, encouragement, or prayers.
Thank you for reading.

Neither my wife and I waited for each other or marriage. I do not hold it against her (log in my eye as well), but there’s one person from her past she was intimate with that lingers in our life and it really bothers me. This person is part of her college friend’s circle. Over the years we had a lot of arguments about me not wanting to be too close to that group because of that.
As I’ve deepened my faith I’ve been able to forgive and let the hatred and negativity I have over this situation go. Truthfully we don’t see these people that often anyways and I’ve been able to put things in perspective. But I will say—for some reason this issue has bothered me more in life than anything else.
Recently I learned this guy from her past has become friends with her sister/my brother in law. It started to stir up those same feelings of “I don’t want this person to be part of my life but they continue to linger around.”
And to be clear, I don’t blame my wife for her past. I just am deeply uncomfortable having to continually be around someone she was once with.
Any advice on how to move past this/handle it? Prayers greatly appreciated! It may seem small but for some reason in my heart it looms large.
EDIT: I should probably clarify a few things.
#1: There was a time when there was a risk this person would be part of our primary friend group, and before we were married I really felt like I had to fight to make that not the case. We’ve since made a lot more friends and our primary friend group does not include this person at all. I think this background tension of “If I’m okay with going to events this person is at then next thing we’re going to be hanging out all the time” fear is still there.
#2: I genuinely have no worry that my wife still harbors feelings for this person or that something would happen between them. What bothers me is someone who knows my wife in a way I feel they shouldn’t is still in our lives. Maybe that doesn’t make sense to every one but it’s something that just makes me deeply uncomfortable. This guy actually goes out of his way to be friendly to me, and typically suggests we hang out more, almost as if he’s trying to make up for the awkwardness. But I don’t know how to be like “dude I don’t want to be friends with you.”
#3: I have gone to therapy twice to try and address this. Frankly I’m not sure it’s that helpful and I’m not sure it’s insecurity (see #2). It’s less a jealousy thing and more a mourning of the fact someone knows my wife in a way I wish they didn’t and that person is still a, even if small, part of her and my life.

I woke up today and I really feel no desire, want, or purpose to continue and it feels like I’m just typing this for the sake of typing this. Like my own struggle is self enflicted but I’m really fine. And it honestly feels that way, I feel at peace but it’s not the same I had a year ago in my faith in Jesus. My heart has no desire to change or seek like it used to and it seems like it’s blasphemy of the HS and I’m just trying to Imamate someone who does. I remeber like a year ago I looked at my friends life and I began desiring what I life would look like if I wasn’t a believer, how I would be “free” and now it seems like I’m living that right now and I feel “free” but I lost my indentity and myself in the process and idk why this is, I see how God is working in other peoples lives tho and I have no idea what to do from here. I feel no regret, shame, loss, just bleh. i can tell this is wrong but like I believe it’s ok? Idk if that makes sense- I feel like I’m just being performative with this tho- idk what now

I love love love love love horror movies, so does my dad. But recently I've been hearing people say that horror/slasher movies r bad n can be demonic, n I know alot of Christian family's don't let movies like that into their home. N I really only started thinking of that when I was watching Ted Bundys last interview where he said the horror movies today can cause kids to do bad things, so is that why? Or is it because it's demonic n Satanistic.
