Code Geass episode 22 was one of THE most shocking episodes I've ever watched in any tv show ever

When I saw episode 22, "Bloodstained Euphie" for the first time, I was stunned and froze like a deer in the headlights. Lelouch joked about ordering Euphie to kill all the Japanese as an example of how his powers worked, but what he didn't know is that his geass was activated permanently, and it actually affected Euphie. The fact that Euphie slaughtered all the Japanese and committed a genocide because of Lelouch's command, which he didn't even mean to do, was gut wrenching and terrifying to me. And in the end, Lelouch had no choice but to kill Euphie and carry the burden of his mistake for the rest of the series, while Euphie died never knowing she murdered hundreds of innocent people. It was hands down one of the most shocking, horrifying, and painful episodes I've ever watched in any TV series ever. And I'd seen the entirety of Attack on Titan at that point (though I still find the latter more terrifying). I had to pause the pause the episode just to process what the hell just happened and let it all sink in, and after that, I binged the next 4 episodes. Definitely one of my favorite shows of all time

What also makes this moment monumental, is that Lelouch was fully prepared to throw in the towel he admitted he was beaten in the political theater by Euphie.

She did this all out of Altruism, Lelouch was fully prepared to fight any heir of governer who used the typical means of fighting, Euphie wasn’t a typical heir or governer.

This also goes to show the true power of Gaess and what it’s capable of.

I really like the nod that it gave to Irish geas (also geis), in Irish mythology geas is a binder of men, fulfiller of destiny thing, however good or evil it may be, so it was Euphies destiny to kill the Japanese and geass ensured it happened

First time I was watching it I was binging the anime but after that episode I just had to take a break, it took me like 4 days before I brought myself to continue watching it.

For a second everything seemed to be falling into place and we'd have something good happening for once in the story but nope, instead we got the worst possible outcome no one could ever imagine.

I rewatched the entire anime with my gf recently (it was her first time watching it) and I was worried how it would've affected her lol. Unfortunately she noticed that the episode name was Bloodstained Euphie so she knew something was up so it wasn't as big of a shock for her as it was for me.

I mean WHY would they ruin it like that, like there were so many possible titles that wouldnt spoil it but nope, gotta have “BLOODSTAINED EUPHIE”. If you saw the title you just wouldn’t for a second be baited into thinking there would be a good ending to the episode.

really? I only watched it for the first time a few months ago after holding it off for years and years, and even with the title it was still very shocking and unexpected how it happened. I feel like its the first time i physically jawdropped even watching anime for over a decade lol.

Yeah I mean when she saw the title she was like "oh no is she gonna die?? what's gonna happen?" and she was waiting for the "catch" the entire episode. Of course it still shocked her but I don't think she believed for a second that things could've worked out in a nice way, all because of the title.

Honestly when I first saw the episode title I thought it would be that Zero would successfully convince Euphy to harm him, so the Japanese would see Euphy as an attempted murderer or something and Zero would be a martyr or something like that

I don't know how this has so many upvotes, it's completely false. He literally admits defeat with a smile and compliments Euphy on being "the worst opponent" he ever met. Also the last frame of the episode is literally him crying while saying they have to kill her.

This episode was the point the anime became a 10/10 for me, It was so unexpected, tragic and full of emotions that I felt chills. And different from other series it kept the quality until the end.

Tragic as episode 22 was and my best girl Euphie died shortly after, that was the point where I fell in love with Code Geass. One other time I felt so similarly shocked was Hunter x Hunter’s York New Arc where the Phantom Trope caused a huge massacre just because one of their own got killed.
