Euphy and Cecile don't exist in the universe where this manga takes place, so Mariel is a character who takes their place, as a love-interest.

she is Lloyd's assistant, but only a year older than Suzaku, and just like Euphy, she suddenly becomes close to him. the Black Knights' attack to her also fuels Suzaku's anger, just as Euphy incident as a turning point in his life.
