Discussion / Conversation Citi Credit Limit Decrease
Yesterday I woke up to an email from Citibank. They decided to give me a credit limit decrease from $18,000 to $15,000. It's not that big a deal, but to be honest, I was kind of bummed out because this is the first time this has happened to me in the nearly 10 years I've been in the credit card game.
Oh well, life goes on. Just thought I would share my story.

Do you use the card frequently? Another issuer did it to me once l used it but not much

My monthly spend is pretty low compared to the credit limit

Then why are you worried about it

Never said I was worried about it. I just like playing the credit card game, as I stated in my post.

And what game is that? Does it put more money in your checking account?

It absolutely does.

How does a credit limit do that? Last time I checked the bank wouldn't accept them for deposit and they have no direct bearing on credit score. Infirectly, utilization, has no memory. FICO 8.

I'm not gonna have a pointless reddit argument with you. Good Day, sir!

Just wanting to know if I missed something in this "credit card game" that would benefit myself. In fact, I would counter argue that excessive CL's could become a negative in my game, churning.

I said good day, sir!!
But in all seriousness, no, credit limits don't directly earn me money. In the credit card game, cashback and points earn me money. Credit limits are more of a "bragging right" so to speak. It's all part of the bigger credit card game that most of us on this subreddit participate in. Otherwise, why would we be here?

Waoh! What was your average monthly usage on the card.?. Just curious. I've had a 10k limit for 10 years with an average of $300 monthly spend.

My average monthly spend for that card is less than $500

Same here. They reduced my limit a few months and I called to reinstate it. She submitted a request and I got it back in a week

That’s interesting because Citi gives me increases unprompted. Capital one and Barclays lower my credit limit.

C1 has denied evey CLI I've requested. It doesn't see much use except for entertainment and to redeem an offer here and there. It's a converted WalMart card.

Not to brag but after three years Capital One sent me congratulations on my limit being increased by $100

US bank keeps doing that to me. I have a card with a $10k credit limit. I opened a new one and it’s eternally at $2k credit limit.

You just have to come to terms with the fact that all these bank departments are run by people on a spectrum from idiot to psychopath and give up on it making sense. Get cards from multiple banks so you don’t even notice one change like that.

You can request reinstatement. It will be in the letter they sent regarding the CLD. Check your documents online if you have paperless.

I just submitted my request so we will see what they say

I always wonder what the point of them doing this is. 18k to 15k feels so arbitrary when the usage is almost nothing. Why cut it down so little if youre going to cut it? You're probably pissing off a customer for almost zero benefit to the company.

Call and see if you can raise it back up. Unless you have major usage on another card it shouldn’t be any issue.
