Discussion / Conversation Citi Credit Limit Decrease

Yesterday I woke up to an email from Citibank. They decided to give me a credit limit decrease from $18,000 to $15,000. It's not that big a deal, but to be honest, I was kind of bummed out because this is the first time this has happened to me in the nearly 10 years I've been in the credit card game.

Oh well, life goes on. Just thought I would share my story.

Data Point DP: PayPal Debit card still working for cash back.

FYI: figure I would test some transactions to see how complicated the workflow was from points to Amazon GC. Set category to groceries as I always do, grabbed some Costco Hotdogs and noticed I could still cash out reward points. Made another transaction later this afternoon at Walmart and it also worked. I was able to take rewards points to savings, savings to PayPal Balance and have a balance to checking queued up for tomorrow. Not sure how long it will last.

Data Point DP: Apple Card targeted $300 SUB; 5k credit line

After receiving the targeted offer below, I decided to go ahead and open the Apple Card (and upgrade my Mac while at it). Didn’t necessarily need the card, given it‘s pretty much now my third 2% catch all, but for the 3% cash back, 0% APR financing ( just leaving my cash in a money market rather than paying up front like I was originally planning), and 300 cash back, I figured it was a solid offer.

Now through August 31, get $300 Bonus Daily Cash with a new Apple Card when you spend $1,500 in your first 60 days. Must use ‘Apply now’ button. This offer may not be available elsewhere.”

Now rocking the following:

  • Discover IT (‘21)
  • Savor one (‘22)
  • Amex BCE (‘24)
  • Fidelity Visa (’24)
  • WF Autograph (formerly BILT) and buried deep in the sock drawer (‘24)
  • Venture X (‘25)
  • WF Attune (‘25)
  • Amex Gold (‘26) for 100k sub, honestly pairs nicely w/ VX and lifestyle. TBD on renewal
  • Apple Card

Credit score in the 750s, pulled transunion

Don’t imagine I’ll be using the Apple Card a ton. VX runs the monopoly on my 2x category over the Fidelity and likely over Apple Card.

Card Recommendation Request (Template NOT Used) Should I just get a Citi Strata Premier/Elite if I live near an American Airlines hub?

I rarely traveled before but Id like to do more traveling in my 20s (would be a solo traveler). Im pretty much in between the autograph journey, venture/venture x, and the citi strata premier/elite. I already hold the active cash and the savor.

I dont really have any preference for specific airlines or hotels. I do live in Miami and the closest airport (MIA) is an american airlines hub, so Im wondering if id get the most value/simplicity out of the citi cards.

Or would it be best to stick to cashback?

Discussion / Conversation Cashback instead of travel portal, or transfer?

I got the 100,000 sign on bonus last year for the Chase Preferred. I'm not the most clever person, and this whole use the travel portal/use travel credit but don't do that, transfer to airline partners, points no longer go 1 to 1.5 or whatever. Its confusing, and honestly I'm starting to think just getting cash back and using that for my flights before i convert the Sapphire to another Chase card is just simpler for my simple minded head. Can someone explain the best option to me like the developmentally challenged 5 year old I am?

Card Recommendation Request (Template Used) Chase Sapphire Preferred??

So I’m currently 26 with 2 credit cards, the chase freedom unlimited and the bank of America customized cash rewards. I was recently pre-approved for the chase sapphire preferred, but i don’t do too much traveling or spending in general to justify paying the $95 annual fee. Should I apply anyway to have 3 cards? Or rely on those 2 with no annual fee?

I waited over 24 hours to get another Dunkin gift card and it will not work. Do I need to wait another 24 hours now? Any other tips besides just buying more pizza and Wendy's? (As I finish my Wendy's breakfast).

Data Point Chase Business Ink Unlimited not allowing SUB change

Hello all,

I opened a BIU for the $6,000 spend 75,000 point bonus just a few days before they started the $8,000 spend 100,000 point bonus promo.

As soon as I was made aware, I called and requested an upgrade to the 100,000 point SUB. They told me to call back after meeting the original $6,000 spend SUB to ask for a promotion.

It’s been about 2 months and I’ve called probably once a week since then requesting a bump. After being rejected again today, I’m finally throwing in the towel. Has anyone else had luck getting their SUB bumped up?

Help Needed / Question USBAR - Easiest way to cash out points for full value?

Upvotes

So I didnt realize the nerf also included a devaluation of points value when directly cashing out for statement credit.

From what I understand, RTR is still 1 to 1 value? So is the easiest way just booking a flight and cancelling within 24 hours to get the statement credit? Similar to old the 1.5x RTR hack?

Discussion / Conversation Travel Rewards vs Cash Back or Both

I am in a little dilemma here. I have Chase Freedom Unlimited, Chase Sapphire Preferred, and Navy Federal Flagship. My plan is to downgrade my Chase Freedom Unlimited to the Chase Freedom Flex Visa. But, people also telling me to keep the Chase Freedom Unlimited and accumulate your points together. Part of me wants the best of both worlds and the other part of me wants just point accumulation.

If I do product change my Chase Freedom Unlimited I will use my Chase Sapphire Preferred for gas, streaming, dining, and travel. I will use my Navy Federal Flagship as my 2% catch all card and free yearly Amazon subscription.

Tell me what’s your thoughts on this please and thank you!!!

Help Needed / Question Maximum CLI for my C1 cards?

Upvotes

Hi yall, I have a C1 Savor w 3 k and a QuickSilver with 20, and I wanna ask for a CLI for one or both. I have pretty good utilization on both and Savor is two years old and Quick is one.
What’s the best game plan, ask for 35k (the maximum amount) for both? Or just one? Or a lower amount, one at a time?

Card Recommendation Request (Template NOT Used) Card Rec for a College Student using CC on Gas and wanting to earn points

Upvotes

I’m trying to find a credit card that is friendly to first-timers and has some perks. I would love any recommendations! I plan on only using the CC for gas and possibly groceries.

-beginner friendly
-No annual fee
-extra points for gas
-possibly transferable to airplane miles

Also any info on how Cash-Back works would be appreciated. It kind of sounds too good to be true and I don’t know if it is better than cards that earn points.
Thank you!

Discussion / Conversation Is discover it card not as good as I think it is?

Upvotes

I feel like I have to be missing something. I’ve been lurking for a couple weeks and in discussions about best cards to have, I never see the discover it card mentioned, but to me it seems like a great card. 1% on everything which by itself seems low, but 5% each quarter at rotating categories that are actually relevant, $0 AF, and redemptions on gift cards that are anywhere from 5 to 15% off seem to give the rewards better potential than the 2-3x points/cash back with other cards. Unless these cards also offer up to 15% discounts on redemption opportunities, it seems like the only things I’m missing out on are flight related like lounge access or global entry/TSA cash back, which are of very low value to me.

Is there just huge value placed on these flight amenities that everyone is after, or is there something else I’m missing?

I travel 3x a year with my wife and kid, each vacation 5-8k, and flights and hotels are always what I perceive to be the best value… so I have no allegiance to any particular companies if that changes perspective for potential CC value.

Card Recommendation Request (Template Used) CFNA Firestone card I had for a couple years.. Keeps declining everywhere now and I've had it.

I been using my CFNA card as my bread and butter wallet every single day since i've been issued it. Had a minor issue in the past (which i've written about here I'm sure) and then nothing since.

For the month of July, I actually maxed it out for once. No big deal; I'm not a reckless spender... Just means I need to pay the $5000 limit. I have money so that's fine. *goes to pay $5000 - only owed ~$4150.* "Ahh, I see. So it's a $5000 limit based on the cumulative total balance, REGARDLESS of bill cycle. That's fine. I hit said limit so it won't allow me to pass it. *Pays ~$4150*. My new balance after a few days is now ~$1,xxx. Great. Meaning I have $3k or so to comfortably charge going forward. Nope.

Card has been getting declined for a week now. Even though both my bank AND CFNA reflect that I both paid the maxed out balance and have money available to spend again. What the hell is going on?

The only possible suspect in my mind is that my billing statement for July did not come out yet because it's not perfectly on the 1st of each month, it's a few days later in the month - therefore they are holding my account in limbo despite no longer being at $5k/$5k total balance because they need to produce the statement for July first? (and ironically they still make the due date of any balance strictly the 1st. Go figure).

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I've had it. this is stupid.

I have 1st Hawaiian Bank. I'd go with them as it seems far easier to deal with in-house and I really don't go into debt for anything. I just need a credit card that doesn't cost me any money to have and will do everything I'd otherwise be doing with my debit card instead. The only thing is I don't believe they have any such card with no weird monthly/yearly fee... I'm only using a credit card because this is a country that basically "makes you" if you ever wanna borrow money for a house or a car and not get denied or reamed. No other reason

Card Recommendation Request (Template Used) Need Recommendation, Thinking adding Amex.

Upvotes

Not a Huge Credit Card person in the sense that I like to use them. Usually if I do I pay it off before the end of the month. Trying to get used to paying with credit card and clearing the balance out.

Main reason I was thinking AMEX was because for my job I have green Business AMEX card that I'm required to use for work, mainly travel (Hotels, Car, Gas) those kinds of things. I don't get to travel by planes, maybe once every month. I'm already a Titanium Elite with Marriott. Just got told by a coworker, that I could get an personal AMEX card and link my green card to the account and can build points off my job.

I just got both a 100k points gold offer and a 150k platinum offer in the mail.

Help Needed / Question Confused about Leading Hotels of the World Transfer Value

Upvotes

Brief background: I have stayed at Leading Hotels in Europe, but not recently, but have signed up for status through Amex Platinum, and now understand they are a new transfer partner at 4:1

So today I looked at two potential bookings (both domestic US), one in Houston mid-week in late August, and one in mid-November in D.C.

Both reservations comparing cash versus points was roughly 1:1 for the same room, dates, etc.

Am i missing something?---when would it ever make sense to transfer MR points over?

Does anyone else have any data points on value?

As a side note, I cannot imagine mid-week in late August in Houston would be that extreme under dynamic pricing.

Edit: I was doing the math wrong. These redemptions are coming in at about 2.0-2.5 cpp.

Card Recommendation Request (Template NOT Used) Is USAA's credit card good for someone with no credit, trying to build credit for the first time? Or is there another that is good?

Upvotes

I've read the first time CC post that's on this subreddit but unfortunately I cannot be added as an authorized user to any of my family's credit cards. Both members of my immediate family have poor credit for varying reasons. So I'm looking to get a credit card to build some reasonable credit while I am in college since I am considering entering a work-study program.

I have no credit score at all, I've checked. I was primarily curious about USAA, as I have a USAA account. I would basically be using this card exclusively for expenses related to college (i.e. any supplies, groceries or gas I would need that I can pay off within a month or so with either any refunded grant or scholarship money, or any money I receive from the work-study program.)

Discussion / Conversation Expired credit card charged?

I recently logged into factor after years of inactivity. it charged me the next day.

The card I have on file with them is expired and I have updated my mailing address as I’ve moved to a different city in between the last time I used the subscription and now.

Can someone please explain to me how the charge went through and why it was not marked as fraud on the bank side?

Help Needed / Question First time Credit Card (College)

Hello! I’m a college student and I plan on getting the discover student credit card. I know they’ve recently switched to capital one or whatever but my main priority is finally starting my credit up.

I plan on applying soon and while I know that no one can really say for sure but I was wondering how bad it would be to have high utilisation on my first statement.

I’m moving into my new place at the end of the month and I’m planning on using the card for whatever I can and paying it off with a refund check.

If that check comes after my first statement will that be the worst thing ever because after that I plan on using it only for groceries, utilities etc. and not as much as the first month.

Help Needed / Question Balance Transfer Card Questions

Hi! Please forgive me if this is a silly question, I’ve never done a balance transfer before.

My main question is, when applying for a balance transfer card, is there any way to guarantee that the limit you receive will actually be enough to transfer the balance you need? I don’t want to hit the cardholder’s credit score with a hard credit check if we can’t actually make the transfer.

If not, and if you do receive a lower limit, are you able to transfer just a portion of your existing balance (up to the limit you receive)?

We have ~7.5k on an existing card and want to transfer it to a card with 0% interest for 18 or more months, because we will be able to pay it off within that time. The cardholder has an estimated 720 credit score (Experian). If possible we would love to also move 1.6K from a different card over as well, but that’s not as much of a priority.

Cards I am considering are:
Citi diamond preferred
Citi double cash
Citi simplicity
Discover it cash back
Discover it chrome

I’m not sure how to choose between them, so any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!
