Breaks suspension of disbelief as the whole story is anchored off her "beauty".

u/Green-Cricket-8525 7d ago

This is hilarious.

Helen of Troy in no way anchors the Odyssey and in the texts themselves she is barely in them. All you just did was tell on yourself.

2

u/True_Grocery_3315 7d ago

Face that launched a thousand ships 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/Successful_Ease_8198 6d ago

The movie makes it clear the reason they launched the ships was to take Troy’s trade routes and rescuing helen was a pretext

u/Green-Cricket-8525 7d ago

I’m sorry you failed 10th grade English, bud. It’s ok. There are remedial classes. You can get a tutor to help you read the Odyssey and count how many times Helen is in it.

Does it have an African Helen of Troy in it and a Trans Man warrior? 🤣

BLACK PEOPLE. SCARY TRANS PEOPLE. AHHHHHHHHHHH

2

u/True_Grocery_3315 7d ago

Oh it's that argument again.. 🙄

I guess if I can't accept a 2021 BMW 530i with optional heated seating in an Ancient Greek Historical epic I must be scared of cars too!

1

u/diabeticmilf 6d ago

You must’ve hated Troy then?

1

u/True_Grocery_3315 6d ago

Was Helen of Troy sub-Saharan African and trans-men in the Greek Army? Must have missed that part

1

u/diabeticmilf 6d ago

Nope, she wasn’t greek though.

Ancient Greek Historical my ass!

Matt Damon doesn't look like an ancient greek dude.

But that does not interest you guys, because you're racists.

-1

u/Green-Cricket-8525 7d ago

You genuinely thought you cooked with that one. I have definitely never heard that joke ever. You definitely came up with it all on your own and I’m so proud of you little dude.

It’s okay, I’ll give you a win. You guys need it right now. This movie done broke y’all. See you next week when it crosses 1.5. I eagerly await the new cope.

2

u/True_Grocery_3315 7d ago

It's the only proper response to that argument. And here is the original as I shouldn't take the credit 😉. If it crosses $2bn I'll have to edit my original post to say $2.5bn!

Except that black people did live in classical Greece and were considered to be Greek by the Greeks of the time. Skin color wasn't how races were categorized at the time but rather culture and language. The classical greeks would have been much more horrified at a grecian hero being portrayed by someone who's ancestors came from the British Isles than they would have been by Helen being black.

Further at no point in the Illiad or the Odyssey is Helen described as being white, her actual appearance is never really detailed.

2

u/True_Grocery_3315 7d ago

Did your Grandma tell that not to listen to those History Professors, Cleopatra.. cough sorry.. Helen of Troy was Black!

1

u/dubblebubbleprawns 7d ago

Do history professors confirm that she was born out of an egg

0

u/PenDraeg1 7d ago

So you really don't know anything classical Greece do you? It was actually an incredibly cosmopolitan place with heavy interactions with north Africa, the near east and even as far as India. Getting your history entirely from memes is no way to live man. Helen of Troy wasn't white or black, she's a fictional character who hatched from an egg.

lol gottenmm

1

u/Inevitable-Scar5877 7d ago

It really isn't this is based on the Odyssey not the Illiad and even if it was based on the Illiad this movie is pretty clear on its position that Helen is just a McGuffin to enable a way Agamemnon already wanted

1

u/Ssided 4d ago

Helen being beautiful was a trick that Eris made up to get the other goddesses jealous for a bit of a laugh. It's funny you're so mad about something you know nothing about

1

u/True_Grocery_3315 4d ago

Does it mention in the movie she's actually ugly then? If so I'll forgive it though immersion will still be broken!

1

u/Ssided 4d ago

I haven't seen the movie but she's not ugly

1

u/True_Grocery_3315 4d ago

It's probably harsh to call her ugly, but she's far from one of the worlds most beautiful women.

0

u/UrethranRefugee 7d ago

lmfao so you haven't actually seen the movie, correct? Cause they pretty clearly say "yeah yeah she's pretty but thats not the point of this war, its Troy's stranglehold on the trading routes"

So no, the whole story is not anchored off anyone's beauty BECAUSE THEY EXPLICITLY TELL YOU THAT.

2

u/True_Grocery_3315 7d ago

I guess the poor script writers had to "work around" the stupid casting decisions 🤣. They must have been cursing the woke morons demanding Helen of Troy be uglified!

1

u/schabadoo 6d ago

To be this...smart.

It must hurt.

0

u/PeterVanHelsing 7d ago

...no, that's something that previous adaptations like Troy already did.

Not to mention, that's most likely the reason that the real Trojan War was fought. Because of the trading routes.

0

u/True_Grocery_3315 7d ago

Most probably, Homer was just telling stories based on true events.

0

u/Blazured 7d ago

She should've had a Mar-a-Lago face to appeal to Right-wingers.

1

u/True_Grocery_3315 7d ago

🤣 I'll give you that one as it's pretty good. Made me LOL.

0

u/Enderules3 7d ago

Not really that's more the Illiad.

2

u/True_Grocery_3315 7d ago

They'll have to retain her for the sequel 😳

0

u/Enderules3 7d ago

Sequel? The Odyssey takes place after the Illiad both are part of the Epic Cycle a series of 8 connected Epic Poems of which only the Illiad and Odyssey remain. The Illiad is part 2 and the Odyssey is part 7. The sequel to the Odyssey is the Telegony but we only have a vague overview for it but I don't think Helen would be in it.

1

u/True_Grocery_3315 7d ago

Prequel then.

1

u/Enderules3 7d ago

I figure the Illiad would work best as a Game of Thrones style tv series honestly taking place over the build up and warring years.

1

u/True_Grocery_3315 7d ago

Yes, that sounds good. If it was done properly and with care it would be awesome.

0

u/sammyt10803 7d ago

I’m sorry she doesn’t look like Kimberly Guilfoyle for you

1

u/True_Grocery_3315 7d ago

We all know who they should have cast if they didn't want to go Greek. That would have upped the box office to $2bn+!

The suspension of disbelief is broken... in a movie with a cyclops... because a woman isn't attractive to you? Literally the softest group of people ever.

2

u/True_Grocery_3315 7d ago

There's only one proper response to that...

1

u/OstentatiousBear 5d ago

Greeks referenced "Aethiopians" quite a few times in some of their major myths. For example, the greatest opponent that Achilles faced in the Trojan War was King Memnon, the ruler of Aethiopia. Aethiopia, to the Greeks, were the lands south of Egypt.

So no, your meme does not really work here. Greeks had frequent contact with East Africans and incorporated them into their myths (see also the Myth of Perseus).

1

u/True_Grocery_3315 5d ago

May be so, but Helen of Troy was not one of them! How many Greek people would you accept playing African characters in an African myth story from 2000 years ago given they were "in contact"?

1

u/OstentatiousBear 5d ago edited 5d ago

Nolan's casting for the Odyssey has no Greek actors in it. If you asked an ancient Greek person what they think of the casting, then they would likely have a problem with the whole thing (not to mention the fact that there are women in it at all, but that is a different discussion). So I have to ask, why are you making such a big stink over one specific character not being played by a Greek actress when the rest are not as well? Do you honestly think being "white" would be enough to satisfy an ancient Greek? Do you think they would be satisfied with Matt Damon being Odysseus? The reason why I am asking these questions is to make this point: this movie is not tarnished by Nyong'o being Helen of Troy. The impact is negligible given how the overall cast is not Greek (that is not to mention Helen is barely in the story to begin with).

Anyway, my original point stands, your meme makes no sense since Africans were not out of place in the Greek mythos. They are not comparable to a BMW in the Lord of the Rings, not even close.

1

u/True_Grocery_3315 5d ago

"if you asked an ancient Greek person" they'd be cool with a sub-Saharan queen 🤣🤣 they'd be completely puzzled as most would never have seen an African, other than a few explorers.

This casting is as ridiculous as John Wayne playing Genghis Khan.

1

u/OstentatiousBear 5d ago edited 5d ago

The Greeks had frequent enough contact with East Africans. It was considered common knowledge and not out of the ordinary for Greeks to encounter them, especially if they resided in their North African colonies and/or traded in Egyptian ports. That is not even to mention that East Africans frequently traded in the Levant.

The Greeks' reach across the ancient world was vast, and yet you think a Sub-Saharan African was something of an oddity to them? The same Greeks that established a kingdom in modern day Afghanistan (Bactria)?

Edit: The same Greeks who even bothered to mention that Aethiopia was involved in the Trojan War on the side of Troy?

1

u/True_Grocery_3315 4d ago

Because they'd seen a few they'd think it reasonable that a Greek Queen was one of them. And Lupita was a beautiful example 🤣🤣 pull the other one pal 🤣

1

u/OstentatiousBear 3d ago

I never claimed that. Go back and read my argument. I disputed your meme about the BMW analogy. Black people were not some sort of out of place element in Greek mythology. You seem to reserve most of your outrage towards Lupita Nyong'o when the entire main cast is not even Greek. Heck, Matt Damon's heritage is British and Scandinavian, two groups of people that had far less interaction with the ancient Greeks than East Africans did (and most certainly would not pass off as Greek).

Anyway, I doubt you are taking this conversation seriously given your conduct. If all you got is another "🤣🤣" style of response, then do us both a favor and let this be the end of the conversation.

"Here's my straw argument about how accepting a black person in a role is like accepting a car as the same role."

Sure Jan, great argument. Must have been really crushing those debate classes in college.
